Lurie Children's to Build New Hospital in Downers Grove Area
Lurie Children's Hospital is set to open a new low-acuity hospital in the southwest suburban area of Downers Grove, aiming to bring its internationally recognized pediatric care closer to families in western suburbs. The 300-bed facility will feature an emergency department, surgery suites, inpatient beds, and specialized services such as oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, and orthopedics.
According to Tom Shanley, MD, President & CEO of Lurie Children's, the new hospital represents a significant expansion of the organization's growth initiatives. "This is an exciting opportunity for us to bring our high standard of care to families in the western suburbs," Shanley said. "We're committed to engaging with the community and shaping this facility around their needs."
The new hospital aligns with Lurie Children's long-term strategy of expanding access, improving outcomes, and delivering excellence across communities. Richard Lehmuth, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, noted that the expansion will enable the organization to deliver its signature care in a more convenient and community-designed setting.
Lurie Children's has been actively building its network of outpatient centers and partner hospitals in the Chicago area, with the recent opening of an outpatient center in Schaumburg. The new Downers Grove hospital is part of the organization's mission-driven approach, showcasing confidence in its strategy and deep commitment to serving communities.
The project reflects Lurie Children's dedication to delivering world-class pediatric care wherever children and families need it most. "Together with our team members and community partners, we're shaping the future of pediatric care," Shanley said. The organization expects to make significant progress in achieving its goals through this expansion, solidifying its position as a leading pediatric healthcare system in the region.
