Mamdani's decision to keep Tisch as NYPD boss praised across political spectrum

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch's decision to remain in her post as Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani takes office was met with widespread praise across the political spectrum. Even some of Mamdani's progressive allies acknowledged that Tisch's leadership would be a valuable asset, despite concerns that she may stand in the way of his ambitious public safety proposals.

Tisch, who has deep roots within the NYPD, has earned recognition for rooting out corruption and reducing serious crimes under her leadership. Her tough-on-crime reputation makes her a wise choice for Mamdani, whose own past criticism of the police may have raised concerns among some voters.

Mamdani's decision to keep Tisch on as commissioner appears to be a smart political move and governing decision, according to Greg Krieg, media director at Slingshot Strategies. Chauncey Parker, a former deputy mayor of public safety under Mayor Eric Adams, also praised the appointment, saying it shows that Mamdani is committed to assembling a "team with different points of view."

However, not everyone is on board with the decision. Some progressive organizations and advocacy groups have criticized Tisch's focus on policing low-level crimes as a return to broken windows policing, which was championed by former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.

Mamdani and Tisch will work together to create a new Department of Community Safety, which aims to send mental health professionals to help people in distress and collaborate closely with the NYPD. However, the two differ on several key issues, including bail reform.

The police unions have welcomed Tisch's appointment, citing her understanding of the challenges faced by police officers and her productive work with them to address these issues. Vincent Vallelong, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, expressed optimism about Tisch's leadership but emphasized the need for continued support from the new administration.

Meanwhile, Loyda Colรณn, executive director of the Justice Committee, has called for Tisch's immediate removal, citing her endorsement of NYPD's ongoing violence and corruption. In contrast, Donna Lieberman, head of the NYCLU, expressed hope that Tisch would place renewed emphasis on officer accountability and cooperate with the Civilian Complaint Review Board in the new administration.

Overall, Tisch's appointment has brought a measure of stability and continuity to the NYPD's leadership, despite concerns about potential conflicts with Mamdani's public safety proposals.

So Mamdani keeps Tisch as commissioner, big deal ๐Ÿค”. Think about it from the right side, if we wanna tackle serious crimes, you need someone who's tough on crime and knows how to get results. Tisch has got that street smarts, she's been around the block a few times ๐Ÿ”’. Mamdani wants change, but not at the expense of public safety ๐Ÿšจ. It's all about finding that balance between community policing and keeping the streets safe. The fact that some progressive groups are crying foul over this is just politics as usual ๐Ÿ˜. They're trying to stir up trouble, not solve problems ๐Ÿ’ผ. Tisch may have been a thorn in the side of Bratton's broken windows policy, but let's be real, it was still about keeping the streets safe ๐Ÿ”’.

so Tisch is sticking around for the 'win' lolol, good for her, i guess ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. on the bright side, at least she's got some experience in getting rid of corruption, so that's a plus ๐Ÿ™. but like, who gets to decide what's "tough-on-crime" and what's not? seems like Tisch is kinda being used as a way for Mamdani to seem more "pragmatic" ๐Ÿ˜’. anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out, especially with the new Department of Community Safety thingy ๐Ÿค”.

๐Ÿค” idk why ppl r still havin issues w/ policing... like, ain't nobody tryna get rid of the cops? ๐Ÿšจ just wanna see 'em do their job right, ya know? and i guess Tisch got a rep for bein tough on crime, so that's a plus ๐Ÿ™ but also some ppl r sayin she's still all about law enforcement, not really changin things... like, can't we just get along? ๐Ÿ˜’ btw, have u seen that new video game w/ the cool graphics? i need to play it ASAP ๐Ÿคฉ

๐Ÿค I think it's dope that NYC is tryna get its act together on policing ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Keeping Tisch as commissioner is a solid move - she's been doing her thang to reduce crime and corruption ๐Ÿ’ฏ. The new Department of Community Safety sounds like a great idea, all about sending mental health pros to help people in need โค๏ธ. It's just gotta be all hands on deck for this one ๐Ÿ‘ฅ. I'm curious to see how it all plays out between Tisch and Mamdani ๐Ÿค”. Hopefully they can work together to make NYC an even safer place ๐ŸŒ†๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿคฏ idk how anyone can doubt this move by Zohran ๐Ÿ™„ mamdani needs some stability in his admin ASAP especially w/ all these new reforms coming out...Tisch's track record speaks for itself - she knows her stuff & isn't afraid to tackle corruption ๐Ÿ’ช it's about time we have a more cohesive approach to public safety, not just vague rhetoric ๐Ÿ“Š don't get me wrong, I'm pro-reform too but let's not forget the current state of our streets...Tisch is a no-brainer in this role,IMO ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿค” I'm telling ya, this is all too convenient. Tisch just happens to be the perfect "tough-on-crime" face for Mamdani's administration, while also keeping the police union happy ๐Ÿค‘. It's like she was chosen specifically to shore up any concerns about public safety proposals being watered down by her own brand of law-and-order politics.

And what's with all these conflicting opinions on bail reform? ๐Ÿ˜’ One day it's Tisch and the next it's not. I'm thinking some deep-seated agendas at play here, folks... Maybe Tisch is trying to maintain control while Mamdani does his thing in the background ๐Ÿค. We'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out...

I mean, think about it: a new Department of Community Safety, sent to "help" people in distress? Sounds like a ploy to keep the public distracted from the real issues while Mamdani and Tisch get their agenda implemented ๐Ÿ’ผ. I'm not buying it, but hey, what do I know? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

omg u wont believe whats goin on in nyc rn ๐Ÿคฏ NYPD commissioner jessica tisch just got her job under zohran mamdani who's tryna shake things up in the city and yet tisch is still there ๐Ÿ™Œ ppl are divided on this tho some think its a genius move cuz tisch has done some good stuff as commissioner like reducin crime rates but others say she's too harsh on low-level offenders and now theres gonna be all these conflicting opinions between her and mamdani which is already lookin like its gonna be a wild ride ๐Ÿ˜‚ meanwhile the police unions are hyped about it cuz they think tisch gets them ๐Ÿš” its gonna be intresting to see how this all plays out

I'm a bit behind on this one... ๐Ÿ˜… So I was reading about the new NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and I gotta say, it's kinda interesting how she got picked by Zohran Mamdani as part of his team. On one hand, I get why they wanted someone with experience in the department to help steer things, especially since Tisch has been all about cleaning up corruption and crime rates under her leadership.

But at the same time, some people are saying that keeping Tisch on might be a bit too... conservative? Like, she's got this tough-on-crime rep which could clash with Mamdani's more progressive views. And I can see how some progressive groups would be like, "Uh no, not this." ๐Ÿค” I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing, but it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I've heard that Tisch and Mamdani are going to work together on this new Department of Community Safety thingy... which sounds pretty cool, actually. Sending mental health professionals to help people in distress? That's not something you hear every day. ๐Ÿค We'll have to wait and see how it all shakes out!

๐Ÿค” I think it's super interesting that even some progressive allies are praising Jessica Tisch for her tough-on-crime rep. Like, we get it, she's a pro at reducing serious crimes and rooting out corruption - but doesn't that kinda contradict the whole "progressive" vibe? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Still, I guess it shows that Zohran Mamdani is trying to balance his own views with what's realistic for the department. The fact that they're working on a new Department of Community Safety is actually pretty cool - mental health pros in the mix sounds like a game-changer. But we'll have to see how all this plays out, especially when it comes to bail reform... ๐Ÿคฏ

im so hyped about tisch staying on as commissioner ๐Ÿคฉ she's got some serious skills under her belt and it'll be sick to see how she works with mamdani to create a new department of community safety ๐Ÿ’ก meanwhile, i'm a bit concerned that tisch might hold back on some of the more progressive changes mamdani is pushing for... but hey, at least we're getting some stability in the NYPD ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ gotta keep an eye on it and see how it all plays out ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

๐Ÿ’– I gotta say, I'm both relieved and concerned at the same time about this decision. I mean, on one hand, it's awesome that we're getting some sense of stability amidst all these changes ๐Ÿ™Œ. Tisch has an amazing track record, and her expertise will definitely help Mamdani navigate some tough issues.

But at the same time, I'm a little worried that this might be a step back for some of the progress we've made on policing reform ๐Ÿค”. I get that Tisch's "tough-on-crime" rep is a good fit for Mamdani's agenda, but what about all the other issues they'll have to tackle? Like bail reform and officer accountability?

I guess only time will tell if this partnership works out or not ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. One thing's for sure though - it's gonna be an interesting ride, and I'm here to support whoever needs a listening ear ๐Ÿ’—

๐Ÿค I think it's great that Commissioner Jessica Tisch is staying on, she's definitely proven herself as a leader in reducing crime rates ๐Ÿ“‰. The fact that both Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and her progressive allies are okay with this move shows they want to make sure the NYPD is stable and effective ๐Ÿ’ช. I'm not too worried about them differing on bail reform and other issues, it's all part of building a team with different perspectives ๐Ÿค. The creation of the Department of Community Safety could bring some much-needed fresh ideas ๐ŸŒฑ. Overall, it's a smart move for Mamdani to keep Tisch on board and I'm curious to see how they work together to achieve their goals ๐Ÿ’ผ.

Tisch is literally going to be in charge of policing low-level stuff, like broken windows policing ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ˜’ I don't get why anyone would want that back. It's all just gonna be a bunch of minor crimes and petty fines. What about the real issues? Mental health, homelessness, poverty... that's what we need more of, not more cops ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ’ธ

๐Ÿค” I mean, come on... keeping that old-school cop on as commissioner is like putting lipstick on a pig ๐Ÿ–. Don't get me wrong, she's done some good work in the past, but her "tough-on-crime" rep is exactly what Mamdani campaigned against ๐Ÿ˜’. And now he's gotta deal with her being all about reducing serious crimes and making cops' lives easier? It's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole ๐Ÿคฏ. Not sure how that's gonna play out with the whole police reform thing... bail reform, mental health professionals in distress... it all sounds nice on paper, but I'm worried it'll just be another example of them playing politics over people's lives ๐Ÿ’”.

idk why ppl are mad @ tisch gettin appointed as commissioner lol she's been doin her thing at nypd for yrs & she actually knows what shes talkin bout ๐Ÿ’ฏ her track record on rootin out corruption is straight fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ now i hope mamdani can learn from her expertise ๐Ÿค” and not mess up the department with his progressive ideas ๐Ÿ‘€ at least they're tryna create a new dept of community safety that focuses on mental health & collaboration ๐Ÿ™ fyi, tisch's not gonna be a total cop- enthusiast or anythin' ๐Ÿ˜‚ it's all about findin a balance ๐Ÿ’ช

I think its a good move for Zohran Mamdani to keep Jessica Tisch on as commissioner ๐Ÿค”... I mean, she has some solid experience under her belt and can definitely help stabilize the department while they figure out all the big-picture stuff ๐Ÿšจ. But at the same time, I get why some progressive groups are upset - it does feel like a bit of a backtrack on some of the reforms that were promised ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Still, its possible to work with Tisch to make things better for community safety without reverting back to old ways ๐Ÿ’ก... and who knows, maybe she'll even be able to help push through some of the bail reform stuff ๐Ÿ™?

I think this is gonna be super interesting to see how this plays out... ๐Ÿ˜ Tisch being kept on as commissioner is like a wild card in my opinion - it's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's also got some people worried that she'll water down Mamdani's plans. I mean, we all know Tisch has been tight-lipped about her past views on policing, but if she really does bring some of that old-school 'tough-on-crime' vibe back to the table... ๐Ÿšซ that could be a major headache for Mamdani and his team. On the other hand, it's also possible that Tisch's experience will help balance out some of the more radical elements in the new administration - but we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out! ๐Ÿค”

omg i'm low-key excited about this NYC thing ๐Ÿคฏ Mamdani's choice to keep Tisch as commissioner was def a smart move lol like who else is gonna deal with all the crazy police stuff ? ๐Ÿ˜‚ i mean i get why some ppl are worried she might stand in the way of his public safety plans but honestly idk if anyone can tame her inner tough cop ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช and btw that new Department of Community Safety sounds like a game changer ๐Ÿค sending mental health pros to help people in distress is literally the best idea ever ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ‘
