Former NYPD Officer Fatally Shot by Police in Brooklyn Hospital

A 62-year-old man who had been a former NYPD officer was shot to death by police inside a Brooklyn hospital on Thursday evening. Michael Lynch, of Fort Greene, Brooklyn, had barricaded himself in a room on the eighth floor, threatening two people with what authorities described as a broken toilet part. Police received multiple 911 calls around 5:27 p.m. about a violent man armed with a knife.

When officers arrived, they found bloodstains on walls, floors, and outside the door. Lynch had cut himself with the makeshift weapon and was shouting threats to kill the others in the room. After several minutes of verbal commands, police deployed both a Taser and their gun, but neither struck him. The officer attempted to enter the room but struggled for four minutes while continuing to issue orders.

Lynch's behavior was reportedly out of character for someone described by his relatives as peaceful and unassuming. He had resigned from the NYPD in the 1990s. Police have not disclosed how many times they fired their weapons or where he was struck, citing a need to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. The hospital remains open despite the incident, but officials are tight-lipped about details due to patient confidentiality concerns.

The family of Michael Lynch is struggling to come to terms with the tragic events that unfolded in the hospital, as police described a violent scene that defied the understanding of his loved ones.

OMG 🤯 just read the most shocking news about this former NYPD officer who was shot by the cops in a Brooklyn hospital 😱 I'm still trying to wrap my head around it... 62 years old, can't imagine what would drive someone to behave so violently 💔 especially considering his family's description of him as peaceful and unassuming 🤷‍♀️. What really got me is how the police had to use a Taser and their gun, but still couldn't subdue him... it's just so tragic 😭. My thoughts are with the family of Michael Lynch right now 💕 hoping they can find some peace and justice in this senseless tragedy 🙏

😒 can't believe this guy was a former cop... like what's next, a reality TV star? 🤣 anyway, 62 years old is getting up there to be shooting yourself and others just 'cause you're having a bad day... no excuse, right? 🙄 hospital security should have been better equipped to handle the situation. all this secrecy about the investigation is just frustrating. they need to open up more about what really happened. it's not like we don't know enough already 😡

🤕 This whole thing just feels so wrong... I mean, what's going on here? One minute you're some old guy who used to be a cop, living a peaceful life, and the next, he's barricaded himself in a room with a broken toilet part and threatening people. It's like something out of a movie 🍿

And then the police show up, trying to defuse the situation, but they end up shooting him instead? 🤦‍♂️ Four minutes goes by, he's still talking, they can't get through to him... what were they expecting?

I feel bad for his family, they must be going crazy with worry. But at the same time, we need to ask some questions about why this guy did what he did in the first place? Was he having a breakdown or was it something more? And how many times did the police actually fire their guns? They're just not being transparent enough 🤔

It's also concerning that the hospital didn't evacuate anyone else and they let him continue to threaten people. What if someone had gotten hurt? 🚑 It's all very confusing...

OMG 🤯 this is soooo crazy!! like what was he even thinking?! having a knife and threatening people... and then he just goes ballistic on himself too? 🤕 it's all so sad for the family, you know? they're still trying to wrap their heads around this. i mean, 4 minutes of police trying to get him outta there and no one gets hurt except him... but like, what if something went wrong?! was he really that violent? didn't his family see any signs? i'm just so confused right now...

man this is so messed up 🤯. i'm tryin to process how one minute he's just chillin' in the hospital and next minute cops are shootin him dead. it's like, what was goin on in that head? family is losin their brother, parents are losin their son... it's all so senseless 💔. but at the same time, i gotta wonder if there were any warning signs we missed 🤔. was he strugglin with somethin' we don't know about? was it a mental health crisis that spiraled outta control? so many questions and no clear answers 🕰️. all i can do is hope the family gets the justice they deserve, but also try to make sense of this crazy world we live in 😩.
