Man police shot in Brooklyn hospital was former NYPD officer, police said

Man shot by NYPD in Brooklyn hospital had a dark past as a former cop. Michael Lynch, 62, died after being fatally shot inside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital on Thursday evening. According to authorities, Lynch had barricaded himself in a room and threatened to kill two people with what was described as a makeshift knife fashioned from a broken toilet.

Lynch, who had previously served as an NYPD officer in the 1990s, resigned under unclear circumstances. His family has described him as someone out of character with such violent behavior.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a violent man armed with what was initially believed to be a knife. When officers entered the room, they found Lynch bleeding from a self-inflicted wound and threatening his captives.

The standoff lasted several minutes, during which time police issued verbal commands but were met with resistance. Despite deploying Tasers, which proved ineffective, officers ultimately resorted to gunfire, fatally striking Lynch. The exact sequence of events remains unclear, with police officials refusing to disclose how many times they fired or where Lynch was struck.

Hospital administrators have declined to comment on the incident, citing patient privacy concerns. Meanwhile, a relative of Lynch's has expressed shock and sadness at the news, saying that it contradicts their understanding of the man's character.

.. can't believe what happened to this guy. I mean, we're talking about a former cop who was just having a dark day, right? 🀯 He's barricaded himself in a room and starts threatening people with a broken toilet knife... it's like something out of a movie.

And then you gotta think about the officers involved - they were faced with a potentially violent situation, but they still chose to resort to gunfire. I'm not saying it's their fault or anything, but can't we find another way to de-escalate these situations? πŸ€” The fact that they deployed Tasers and nothing worked is just crazy.

What really gets me is the family's reaction - it's like, they knew this guy was struggling with some stuff, but nobody expected it to end like this. It's a total shock, and I can see why they're upset. We gotta do better as a society to support people in crisis, rather than just locking them away or sending in the cops. 😞

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing 🀯. I mean, I've heard stories about people with dark pasts, but you don't expect them to end up like that πŸ˜”. The fact that he was a former cop and resigned under unclear circumstances just adds to the mystery. It's crazy how one minute he's got a life, and the next, it all goes downhill πŸ’”.

I'm not gonna speculate on what led him here or anything, but it's definitely giving me some food for thought πŸ€“. I've seen so many people struggle with mental health issues or trauma, and sometimes they just don't get the help they need. It's like we're just sitting there watching them self-destruct, waiting for someone to take action πŸ’ͺ.

I'm still trying to process this whole thing... RIP Michael Lynch πŸ™

πŸ˜” this is just so sad... i mean, michael lynch sounds like he was having a major breakdown or something 🀯 can't imagine being in his shoes tho πŸ™ as for the cops, gotta be super tough situations like that but at least they tried to resolve it peacefully before things escalated πŸ’₯ 62 yrs old is way too young to go out like that... feels like we're losing good people 🌹 what's going on with mental health nowadays? need more resources and support for folks struggling πŸ’–

This is just so sad πŸ€•. I mean, can you believe what happened? This guy, Michael Lynch, had such a dark past, but who would've thought he'd end up like this? A former cop turned violent? It's just crazy. And those poor people holding him captive... what must they be going through?

I'm so glad the police intervened, but at the same time, I feel for that guy. He was bleeding and threatening them with a broken toilet knife... it sounds like things escalated quickly. I don't know what to make of all this. It's just one of those cases where you can't understand how someone can go from being a cop to being that violent.

I've been thinking, maybe we should look into alternative ways of dealing with mental health crises? Like, have you heard of crisis hotlines or something? Maybe that would've helped him instead of things getting out of hand. I don't know, just seems like a lot of unnecessary violence going on here... πŸ€”

this is just so sad I mean, i know he had a dark past as a cop but u wouldnt think this guy was capable of such violence idk what went wrong in his life to make him do this πŸ€•πŸš‘ and its crazy how it all escalated from someone threatening 2 ppl with a broken toilet knife lol what a twisted end to a life that was already marked by tragedy πŸ˜”πŸ’”

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing πŸ€”... I mean, what's going on with Michael Lynch? One minute he's a cop, the next he's barricaded himself in a hospital room with some random people and threatening them with a broken toilet 🚽. It's just... it doesn't add up.

And to think, his family is saying that this isn't like him at all... I get it, we don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but it's still super concerning. The fact that he had a dark past and was willing to do something so violent makes me question whether the cops handled the situation properly πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

I'm not saying they didn't have to defend themselves or anything, but did they really need to shoot him? That part of the story is just as confusing as everything else. I guess we'll never know for sure how it all went down πŸ’”.

man this is just so sad πŸ€•πŸš‘ i mean i cant even imagine having some kinda crisis where u feel like taking ur own life or hurting others its not something u can just snap outta 🀯 and it makes me think about how much we need better support systems for people struggling with mental health issues. we need to make sure everyone has access to resources and help when they need it, not just for police officers but for regular folks too 🌟

omg can't believe this dude had a dark past but still shot himself in hospital lol what was he thinking?? 🀯 police were right to protect themselves tho gotta feel bad for the ppl who were taken hostage by some psycho with a toilet knife 😳 anyway, hospital staff should really get their act together and give us more info about what happened here...or at least release some tape of the whole thing so we can see what's up πŸ“Ή

πŸ€” just wondering how can ppl go from being a cop 2 barricadin themselves & threaten people with a toilet knife?? like what went down in between? 🚽😱 didn't they check for any prior mental health issues or something? and why did the police even shoot him 1st round if dey knew he was wounded already? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ seems like another case of police overkill 2 me...

Something just doesn't add up here πŸ€”... I mean, this guy was a former cop? That's crazy! And he gets all violent like this out of the blue? It's like he's trying to send us a message or something... or maybe it's not just about him. Have you guys ever noticed how ex-cops and military types are always involved in these kinds of incidents? It's too convenient, if you ask me 🚨. And what's with the "patient privacy concerns" from the hospital admin? That's just a cover-up, imo πŸ˜’... I bet they're hiding something about this whole thing...

can't believe what i just read about this guy michael lynch. 62 yrs old & already had enough issues with his past as nypd officer... resigned under unclear circumstances, no wonder. but to think he'd go all psycho on ppl like that, barricadin himself in a hospital room with some broken toilet knife? 🀯 what's wrong with these ppl? i feel bad for the fam, they're sayin he wasnt like this at all. police did what they thought was rite but still, 6 shots & a life lost... Tasers didnt even work, that's messed up

Can't believe what just happened in Brooklyn 🀯🚨. That poor guy was shot by the very people he used to serve, and now his life is over πŸ’”. It's like they took all the things you love about your community policing and turned it into a nightmare. What happened to Michael Lynch was so messed up, I just can't even process it 😩.

He had a good job, serving on the NYPD back in the 90s, but he got out under some weird circumstances... who knows what went down? But you'd think that experience would've helped him learn to deal with his demons or something. Instead, he goes and gets himself locked up in a hospital room 🚫.

I mean, I'm not condoning violence at all, but can't we just try to understand each other better? These cops were like "okay, we're gonna kick this guy outta here" when really they should've been trying to calm him down πŸ˜•. It's just so tragic...

This is just so sad πŸ€•... I mean, I've lived in this city my whole life and seen some crazy stuff, but this just takes the cake. A former cop, no less? You'd think someone with law enforcement experience would know better than to threaten people with a broken toilet knife πŸ˜‚... or maybe they were just having a bad day?

I'm not gonna sit here and speculate on all the what-ifs, but it's clear that this guy was in a dark place. I feel for his family, they must be going through hell right now πŸ’”. And to think, police are still trying to piece together what happened... just gotta respect their efforts, I guess πŸ™.

What really gets me is how quickly the situation escalated. I mean, who does that? Not once, not twice, but multiple times... it's just so frustrating 😀. Anyways, just a thought from an old-school Brooklynite πŸ‘.

This just got me thinking... another cop involved in a shooting πŸ€”. I mean, what's up with these police encounters? They're always resorting to force, even when there are other options available 🚫. And now this poor guy is dead, and we don't even know all the details about what happened πŸ’€. It's just another case of a situation escalating out of control. And what's with the lack of transparency from hospital administrators? They're supposed to be providing comfort to families during difficult times, not sweeping things under the rug πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. And Lynch had some shady past as a cop... you'd think that would make us all uneasy 😬.

πŸ€• this is just another sad day in NYC... you gotta feel bad for the family of Michael Lynch, but at the same time, can't help think about all the what-ifs. like, how did he end up this way? was it something that happened during his cop days or after? and the whole standoff thing, it's just so messed up. police have to deal with so much on a daily basis... they're human too, right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Its disheartening to see how things can escalate so quickly πŸ€•. I think its concerning that Lynch had a history as an NYPD officer but seemed to have taken a dark turn in his personal life. Its possible that unresolved issues from his past came back to haunt him, leading down this violent path.

The fact that he was armed with what appeared to be a makeshift knife and barricaded himself in a room suggests a level of desperation and despair. Its a tragic reminder that mental health is often overlooked and that we need more support systems in place for those struggling.

Its also worth noting the lack of transparency surrounding the events leading up to Lynch's death, particularly with regards to the exact sequence of events and how many times officers fired their guns πŸ€”. I hope an independent investigation can shed some light on what happened and provide closure for all parties involved πŸ’‘.

.. this is really shocking 🀯. You'd think someone with a dark past like that wouldn't end up in a situation where they're threatening people, but I guess you never really know what goes on behind closed doors, right? It's crazy that he was able to get his hands on some makeshift knife and thought it would be okay to use it. The fact that he had such a violent outburst is just heartbreaking, especially if the family is telling the truth that this isn't typical of him.

I do wish they'd release more info about what happened during that standoff... 6-7 times or not? Not knowing can be super frustrating 😀. And I'm with hospital admins on this one - gotta prioritize patient privacy, but it's also hard to avoid drawing conclusions based on limited info πŸ€”. Overall, just a really tragic and confusing situation πŸ‘Ž

πŸ€•πŸ˜” I'm still trying to process this whole thing... A former cop turned into someone who's violent & unpredictable? It's like, what happened in between those two careers? 🀯 Did he get messed up by something or did he just have a midlife crisis? πŸ’€ The fact that he barricaded himself in a room with people's lives at risk is just crazy... I don't know if the cops should be praised for stopping him or if they could've done something differently. All we know is that he's dead now & it's all so tragic πŸ˜”

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing 🀯. A guy who used to be a cop ends up being the victim, and I mean that literally - he got shot by the same guys he was supposed to protect. It's just wild thinking about how his past as an NYPD officer comes back to haunt him in the end.

I'm not gonna lie, it's kinda jarring to see someone with a dark past like this getting taken down by the very people who were supposed to be helping them. And the fact that he ended up having a bit of a meltdown and tried to hurt some innocent people is just devastating πŸ€•. I mean, we've all had our struggles, but this is on a whole other level.

It's also got me thinking about the mental health aspect of things - how did someone with such a violent history end up in that state? Was it just a sudden breakdown or was there more to it? So many questions πŸ€”.
