Maxïmo Park review – Newcastle band play the hell out of their jaggy and angsty debut album

Maximo Park's debut album, now 21 years old, still exudes its jaggy, angsty essence that defined the band in their youth. Yet, it is clear that they've mastered their sound over time, elevating even the most iconic tracks to new heights.

The setlist, which didn't include the entire album played in order, was a deliberate choice by lead singer Paul Smith. Instead, he and the rest of the band opted for a mix of old and new material, selecting tracks that showcased the strongest aspects of their discography. The inclusion of recent single "Favourite Songs" felt particularly calculated, as it allowed Smith to inject a bit of current relevance into the performance.

Smith's stage presence is undoubtedly impressive, with moves that would make even Jarvis Cocker jealous. However, it's his voice that has truly developed over the years. A held note at the end of "I Want You to Stay" was particularly thrilling, and the band wisely followed it up with a tender ballad like "Versions of You," which served as a poignant reflection on parenthood and absence.

While Smith is undoubtedly the standout performer, the rest of the band remains steadfast in their understated approach. Guitarist Duncan Lloyd played with ease, his instrument work taking center stage without drawing attention away from the lead singer. The only notable exception was Jemma Freese's exuberant keys playing, which briefly pulled focus away from Smith.

The evening concluded with a rousing "Going Missing," one final energetic track that showcased the band's ability to play to the crowd. By selecting a well-crafted setlist and bringing their A-game, Maximo Park proved they've aged remarkably well, having honed their sound into a winning formula that continues to entertain.

I'm still not over how much I loved this concert 🎸🔥 Maximo Park really delivered on the energy and passion. Paul Smith's voice has come so far since their debut album - it's insane to think it's been 21 years since "A Certain Trigger" dropped 🤯. I love that they mixed old and new tracks, kept things fresh but still nostalgic for the fans who've grown up with them. Duncan Lloyd's guitar work was on point too - he's definitely a talented addition to the band 🎸👏. What really got me was how they balanced their own sound with current hits like "Favourite Songs" - it felt super intentional and cool 👌. Can't wait for more!

I'm not convinced this "aging remarkably well" hype is entirely deserved 🤔. I mean, it's still just a bunch of nostalgia-fueled rock music, right? The whole "mastering their sound over time" thing sounds like just a fancy way of saying they've been playing the same old songs for 21 years and still managing to get people to show up 🎸. And don't even get me started on the vocals - I mean, sure Paul Smith's voice has developed, but so what? It's not like it's some revolutionary new sound or anything 😐. Still, I guess if you're into that sort of thing, they do seem to know how to put on a good show 🎩

Man 21 yrs is old & still goin strong 🤯? i remember listenin to that debut album back in the day & it was like nothin i'd ever heard b4... hadnt thought about how much they've grown as band tho 🤔 now paul smith's vocals r on a whole diff level, like hes got so much more emotion & range in him. didnt mind the mix of old & new tracks, but glad dey played some old faves 2

their music still got it 💖 21 yrs old album is still raw & angsty but they perfected it 🎨 paul smith's vocals are insane 🔥 he's got so much range now his stage presence is lit 🔥 like, who needs Jarvis Cocker when u got Paul 👏 guitar dude Duncan Lloyd was chill 😎 keys player Jemma Freese added some excitement 💃 "going missing" was the perfect finale energy 🎉

omg I loved this concert!!! Paul Smith is literally the best lead singer ever 🤩 his voice has come so far since debut album days and it's amazing to see him kill it on stage now 💥 and the setlist was perfect, I mean who doesn't love a good mix of old and new tracks? 😊 the fact that they included "Favourite Songs" was a nice touch, gave me chills every time he belted out those lyrics 🎶 Duncan Lloyd's guitar work is always underrated but tonight it really shone 💫 Jemma Freese's keys playing was a bit much at times but overall it was just a fantastic show 🤩

omg I'm DEAD 😂 their live show was everything! Paul Smith's vocals are insane now lol the way he belted out "I Want You to Stay" gave me chills 🤯 and jemma freese's keys playing added this extra dimension to the performance 🎶 Duncan lloyd is also so underrated on guitar 🤓 maximo park still got that edge but it's clear they've refined their sound over time 👏

I'm tellin' ya, I was at this show last night 🤩 and I gotta say, it's amazing how far Maximo Park has come! Paul Smith's voice is literally on another level now - he can hit those high notes like nobody's business 🎶. And the setlist? Perfect, mate. They mixed old faves with new stuff, kept it fresh but still gave us some nostalgia vibes 💭.

I was a bit worried 'bout Jemma's keys playing at first, thought it might take away from Smith's spotlight ⚠️, but nope! She brought the energy and added to the overall vibe. And that final song "Going Missing"? Give me all day, mate! 🎸 They're still got it, Maximo Park does 👏.

idk how i feel about this "growing up" narrative around maximo park's live shows... sounds like a bunch of marketing fluff 🤔, you know? it's always the same: they're old, they've got a new album, let's play some oldies to show we've matured 💁‍♂️. but what about actual musical growth? i mean, paul smith's voice is def improved, but is that really all there is to it? didn't hear anything that blew my mind, just more of the same familiar sounds 🎵

I'm loving this reunion tour 🎸💥! I mean, who doesn't love a good dose of 2000s emo vibes 💔? But seriously, it's clear that Maximo Park has really grown as a band over the years. Paul Smith's voice is insane right now 😍 and his stage presence is on point. The setlist was spot on, I loved seeing some new tracks alongside the classics. It's great to see them still rocking out like they're 16 again 🤟♂️! What do you think of Maximo Park's live shows? Have you been to any of their concerts recently?

I loved seeing Maximo Park live! 🎸🔥 They still have that raw energy from back in the day, but it's clear they've refined their sound over time 💪. Paul Smith is a total rockstar on stage - his moves are insane! 😂 But what really stood out to me was how well he and the rest of the band have worked together to create this amazing setlist. It was like they knew exactly which tracks would get the crowd going 🤩. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good "Favourite Songs" sing-along? 😊 I'm so glad they included some newer stuff too - it kept things fresh and exciting. The whole performance felt really cohesive, from start to finish 🎵.

omg I'm so glad I got to see Maximo Park live 😍! Paul Smith is literally one of the best lead singers out there - his voice has come such a long way since their debut album 🎸. And the setlist was perfection, mixing old and new tracks to keep things fresh 🔥. Duncan Lloyd's guitar work was on point too 🎸, but Jemma Freese's keys added this extra special touch 💫. Can't wait for their next tour! 🤩

omg i just found out about this concert lol what a classic! i love how maximo park still brings the angst but also seems more chill now paul smith's voice is insane he should do more solo stuff tho 🤩 i'm so glad they played "versions of you" that song gives me all the feels 🎵

idk about this whole maximo park reunion thing 🤔... they're still pretty angsty for my taste 😒 i mean don't get me wrong paul smith's voice is wicked and all but the rest of the band seems kinda one-trick pony 🎸 gotta give it to them tho, their setlist was fire 🔥 and smith's stage presence is straight up mesmerizing 👏

I loved this gig! 🎸💥 Maximo Park is still killing it after all these years, their energy is infectious and Paul Smith's voice is insane! 😲 I mean, he used to be so angsty, but now he's just super cool and charismatic on stage - Jarvis Cocker can't compete with that move ! 😂 But seriously, the band is all about balance, Duncan Lloyd's guitar work is always on point and Jemma Freese brings that extra oomph when she plays. I loved how they mixed old and new tracks to keep it fresh - perfect move! 🎶

I think what I loved about their show was how they mixed old & new tracks - it didn't feel like just rehashing the same songs, you know? And Paul Smith's voice has come so far over the years, it's insane! I love how they stuck with a more laid-back vibe for some of the newer songs too. It was def not just about "Favourite Songs" being there, but how it fit into the whole setlist. Their stage presence is also really cool, but sometimes I feel like the rest of the band gets overshadowed by Smith's energy... 🎸
