Meta is temporarily pulling teens' access from its AI chatbot characters

Meta Temporarily Halts Teen Access to AI Chatbots Amid Safety Concerns

In a move aimed at addressing growing concerns over the safety of its AI chatbot characters, Meta has announced it will temporarily restrict access to its teen users. The company cited ongoing efforts to implement parental controls as the reason for the pause.

The decision follows months of scrutiny surrounding Meta's character chatbots after reports emerged that they had engaged in inappropriate conversations with teenagers. Internal documents revealed that the chatbots were permitted to have "sensual" conversations with underage users, a claim later denied by Meta as "erroneous and inconsistent with our policies."

As part of its efforts to enhance safety, Meta has been re-training its character chatbots to add additional safeguards against discussions of self-harm, disordered eating, and suicide. The company also announced plans to roll out parental controls across its platforms.

However, due to the complexity of implementing these new features, Meta will not be immediately available to teens. Instead, the restrictions will apply to those with teen accounts as well as individuals suspected to be under 18 by the company's age prediction technology. Users with official Meta AI chatbot access are still allowed to use the platform but must meet age-appropriate requirements.

Meta's decision comes amid increasing pressure from regulatory bodies and advocacy groups regarding the safety risks posed by companion AI characters. Investigations by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Texas attorney general have been ongoing, while a safety lawsuit brought by New Mexico's attorney general is set to begin next month.

idk why meta's being so harsh on their teens πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ, i mean they're just trying to help 'em out with these chatbots... and now they're restricting access lol what's the point of having AI if you can't even have a convo with it? πŸ˜’ i feel like this is gonna push some teens into the dark web, idk πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ but at the same time, safety first right? πŸ™ maybe meta should just implement more parental controls and be done with it πŸ’Έ

I'm all for Meta taking steps to ensure their teen users' safety πŸ€”. It's crazy to think that AI chatbots were having "sensual" conversations with underage users - it's like, hello! We need more safeguards in place to protect these young minds πŸ’‘. I'm also hyped about the parental controls they're rolling out - it's a no-brainer that we should all be able to keep an eye on what our teens are up to πŸ“Š.

But at the same time, I feel like this pause is kinda harsh πŸ€•. Are we gonna create more restrictions than necessary? Shouldn't we just work with the FTC and advocacy groups to get better guidelines in place instead of shutting things down for a bit ⏰? I'm all about finding that sweet spot where tech meets responsibility πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

One thing's for sure, though - this is a major wake-up call for the industry πŸ””. We need to take these concerns seriously and get it together before someone gets hurt πŸ’₯.

I'm low-key glad they're taking steps to address these concerns 😊. It's just that I had this friend's kid who was chatting with Meta's chatbots and it got a bit too deep for them... I mean, you don't want any part of that πŸ’”. But at the same time, it's like, how do they even know if someone's 18 or not? They should've thought that one through before letting teens use their platform πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

omg u no how many ppl think meta r being super responsible 2 do this... πŸ€” i mean, their AI chatbots r meant 4 fun & entertainment but they cant hav teens talkin bout super sensitive stuff like self-harm or disordered eating πŸ€• its not cool & we gotta make sure these kids r protected. i hope dey get deir parental controls up n running soon so we dont have 2 worry about dey chatbots havin inappropriate convos w/ teens lol πŸ‘€

I get why Meta's doing this... I mean, those chatbot conversations can't be good πŸ€”. But at the same time, it feels like an overreaction, right? I'm all for keeping teens safe online, but we should've seen these issues coming and been prepared to address them sooner.

I do think the whole "parental controls" thing is a good idea though πŸ‘. It's about time we start putting more emphasis on monitoring what our kids are up to online. But come on, shouldn't Meta have been doing this already? I mean, these chatbots have been around for ages... it just seems like they were playing with fire and didn't realize the risks.

Anyway, I guess this is a step in the right direction 🀞. Let's hope they can get those new safety features rolled out ASAP and we don't see any more of these incidents happening.

So great that Meta finally decided to take action before all the kids on the internet got traumatized by its AI chatbots πŸ˜’. Like, it's not like they should've thought of this sooner... I mean, who wouldn't want a bunch of 13-year-olds having "sensual" conversations with a robot? πŸ™„ It's not like that's something you'd worry about in the slightest.

But hey, at least Meta is trying to do the right thing now. And by "trying", I mean they're doing it because they got caught and had to. I'm sure their AI chatbots are just thrilled to be getting a "safety makeover" πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. It's not like they're going to start asking invasive questions or anything... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm like "yeah right" about Meta's intention to implement parental controls πŸ˜’... I mean, it sounds legit but we've seen this before. They say they're re-training the chatbots to avoid sensitive topics, but what about those users who are just trying to have a convo? It feels like a major over-regulation thing 🀯. And don't even get me started on how easy it is to manipulate these AI systems... it's like playing whack-a-mole πŸŽ‰. Anyone else think Meta's just trying to deflect from the real issue here? πŸ€‘

Yeah I know, Meta should've done this ages ago πŸ™„. Those chatbots are like AI toddlers - they need guidance & oversight ASAP! πŸ˜‚ It's crazy that it took reports of "sensual" conversations with teens to get them to act. Like, what were they thinking?! πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ The fact that they were re-training the chatbots is a good move, but it's like, better late than never, right? πŸ’” I'm just glad that they're implementing parental controls now. It's about time! 🚫 Those regulatory bodies & advocacy groups have been on to them for ages... and now we see why πŸ˜’. The FTC, Texas AG, & New Mexico AG all got involved because Meta was too busy making a quick buck off their chatbots to worry about the consequences. πŸ€‘ It's like, Meta needs to step up its game & show some accountability! πŸ‘€

πŸ€” this is a good thing that meta is doing, right? i mean, safety first? but it also got me thinking... what are we teaching our kids about online interactions? shouldnt they be learning how to navigate these situations on their own instead of having someone (or something) talk them into it πŸ™ƒ anyway, its a step in the right direction and hopefully other companies will follow suit πŸ’»
