Chicago area commuters braved the freezing temperatures on Friday as Metra scaled back its train schedules to cope with extreme cold conditions.
The move, dubbed a "weekend schedule," sees most train services operate at reduced frequencies and times, much like weekends when rail services usually run more sparingly. However, officials are urging riders to check their line's schedule on the Metra website before setting off, to avoid any confusion.
While the reduced schedules aim to minimize disruptions caused by mechanical issues or track problems, they do mean that travel times will be significantly longer due to speed restrictions imposed when temperatures drop below zero. It's a trade-off between keeping trains moving safely and increasing journey times.
Metra has also made extra personnel available on hand in case of any technical hitches, providing an added layer of support for commuters already facing a challenging day out.
