Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that she reached a deal with US President Donald Trump to extend the deadline for imposing tariffs on Mexican goods. According to Sheinbaum, she and Trump agreed to give themselves "a few more weeks" to discuss outstanding trade issues.
Sheinbaum stated during her weekly press conference on Monday that she spoke with Trump over the weekend and emphasized that both countries were working towards resolving 54 outstanding trade barriers. The US had previously paused an increase in tariffs from 25% to 30% for 90 days, which was set to end this week.
With a strong peso following Sheinbaum's comments, Mexico seems to be relieved about avoiding higher tariffs. A recent deal between the United States and Canada was recently ended by President Trump citing frustration with the negotiations.
