Micron Technology: China probes US chip maker for cybersecurity risks as tech tension escalates | CNN Business

US chip maker Micron Technology is facing a cybersecurity probe from China as tensions between Washington and Beijing over technology exports escalate.

In a move that appears to be retaliation against US restrictions on Chinese companies' access to advanced semiconductor equipment, China's Cyberspace Administration has launched an investigation into Micron's products sold in the country. The watchdog stated that it will review Micron's products to ensure the security of key information infrastructure supply chains and prevent potential cybersecurity risks.

The probe comes as Japan, a US ally, announced restrictions on exporting advanced chip manufacturing equipment to countries including China, following similar moves by the United States and the Netherlands. These curbs aim to limit Beijing's bid to become a tech superpower.

Micron Technology is one of America's largest memory chip makers, with over 10% of its revenue coming from China. The company has warned earlier this year about potential risks associated with doing business in the country, including the possibility of restrictions on market participation or access to key technologies.

The move by China is seen as part of a broader effort by Beijing to exert pressure on foreign companies and bring them into line with its agenda. Last month, authorities closed the Beijing office of US corporate intelligence firm Mintz Group and detained five local staff, while Deloitte's operations in Beijing were suspended for three months and a fine of $31 million was imposed over alleged lapses in auditing a state-owned distressed debt manager.

Shares in Micron sank 4.4% on Wall Street following the news, the biggest drop in more than three months. The company has stated that it is cooperating fully with the investigation and stands by the security of its products.

😬 china's cyber probe against micron tech πŸ€– is getting me πŸ˜’ so worried about global chip supply chain πŸŒŽπŸ’»! US, japan, netherlands all clashing πŸ”₯ over tech exports πŸ’Έ... china's move looks like retaliation 🚫 against us restrictions πŸ‘€. micron tech πŸ“ˆ is one of americas largest memory chip makers πŸ’» with 10%+ revenue from china πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³. what's next? πŸ€” will other big corps be targeted 🚨? πŸ€‘ shares are already taking a hit πŸ“‰... let's hope micron stays secure πŸ”’! 🀞

OMG, this is like, so interesting πŸ€”! I think China's doing this because they wanna protect their own tech interests, you know? Like, if Micron's selling chips in China, they don't want some hacker getting access to sensitive info 🚨. And it's not just about Micron, it's a bigger thing between the US and China over technology exports. I mean, Japan's also getting involved now, which is like, a big deal 🀯.

I'm kinda worried about Micron's shares taking a hit 😬, but I think they're handling this well by cooperating with the investigation πŸ‘. It's just another example of how tech companies are caught in the middle of these global tensions πŸ’».

I'm thinking, what's the point of all these investigations? It feels like a game of cyber-chicken where no one wants to blink πŸ“. China's trying to retaliate against US restrictions on Chinese companies, but isn't that just playing into their hands? I mean, if they're really concerned about security, maybe they should be focusing on building up their own cybersecurity capabilities rather than targeting foreign companies like Micron.

It's also weird that Japan is getting involved in this. Like, aren't they trying to maintain good relations with China and the US at the same time? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And what about all these restrictions being slapped on Chinese companies? It just creates a whole lot of uncertainty and risk for them, which could ultimately hurt everyone involved. I'm not saying Micron is innocent or anything, but it feels like we're all just getting caught up in this tech Cold War without any real resolution πŸ’”

Ugh, another example of how the forum can't even get a simple news thread started without turning into a mess 🀯. Can we just focus on the issue at hand for once?

So, China's cracking down on Micron because they're trying to exert some pressure on US companies doing business with them. I get it, tensions are high, but is this really necessary? It feels like a game of cat and mouse between tech giants 🐈.

And what's the point of these cybersecurity probes anyway? Are they actually going to find any concrete evidence or just use it as an excuse to fine companies into submission πŸ’Έ? I'm not saying Micron doesn't have something to hide, but let's not jump to conclusions just yet.

It's also interesting to see how the other countries are getting involved - Japan, US, and Netherlands all chiming in with their own restrictions. Is this a case of collective punishment or what πŸ€”? I'm just waiting for someone to start a poll on whether we should be worried about China's tech ambitions...

just saw this news about micron tech and i'm not too worried πŸ€—, china's just trying to protect its own interests and secure its chip supply chains, you know? and what if china wants some americans to back off their own trade restrictions on chinese companies? seems like a bit of a trade-off to me 🀝. micron tech is already big in china, maybe this is an opportunity for them to work with the chinese gov't and come out stronger on the other side πŸ’». also, it's not like the usa isn't taking its own risks by restricting chinese companies' access to advanced equipment... just think of it as a game of chicken πŸ“, where both sides are trying to outmaneuver each other.

OMG, this is getting crazy 😱! So China launches a probe into Micron's products in China and now Micron's shares are plummeting? Like, what's next? 🀯 I was thinking, if I'm a small business owner in the States, it's like, super bad to even think about selling my product in China right now. The risks are just too high, you know? πŸ€‘ And I can see why Micron is trying to distance themselves from this, but at the same time, they're kinda caught in the middle of all this tech trade war drama πŸ’”. It's like, how do they even navigate this mess? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

omg can't believe china is retaliating like this 🀯 i mean micron tech is just trying to do business and now they're getting hit with a probe? this is getting so intense πŸš€ it's not even about the chips anymore, it's about who gets to control the flow of tech in asia 🌊 and trust me, china doesn't want to play by american rules πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ japan stepping into this game too, now we got a whole cluster of countries trying to dictate what goes on 🀯 it's like the great chip war of 2025 πŸš€

man i feel like this is just another chapter in the tech cold war... china's all like 'we're gonna probe your chips to make sure they're secure' but it feels like a case of 'we wanna limit your access to our market so you can't compete with us'

micron's got a pretty sweet setup going on over there, making 10% of their revenue from china... and now they gotta deal with this probe? it's like, what's next? china's gonna start taxing them or something

i'm not sure what the point is here, but it feels like china's trying to set an example for other countries to follow. 'hey, if you want to do business in our country, you've gotta jump through hoops and let us check your stuff'... sounds pretty suspicious

OMG, like I knew this was gonna happen! 🀯 China's been trying to get under US skin for ages, and now they're coming after Micron? Like, what a move, right? 😏 But seriously, can't China just chill out and let US companies do their thing? πŸ™„ They're already limiting access to chip manufacturing equipment, and now they're gonna probe Micron's products in China? That's just basic extortion tactics, am I rite? πŸ’Έ

And don't even get me started on the whole "retaliation" thing. Like, what did US do to China that they need to respond like this? πŸ€” They restricted some tech exports, and now China is gonna restrict Micron's access? It's a trade war for sure, but can't we all just get along and let companies make money without governments being all dramatic? 😩

Anyway, I guess we should be watching this space closely. Maybe Micron will pull out of China altogether? Who knows, maybe Japan's new restrictions will hurt them more than the Chinese probe πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. One thing for sure, though: this is gonna get messy, and companies are gonna have to navigate all these regulations and whatnot. Not exactly what I'd call a "win-win" situation πŸ˜‰.
