Mining firm BHP found liable in UK for disastrous Brazilian dam collapse

Landmark Ruling Paves Way for Massive BHP Damages Payout in UK Court

A high court ruling in London has found global mining giant BHP Group liable for the devastating 2015 Brazilian dam collapse that left a trail of destruction and toxic waste in its wake. The disaster, which claimed 19 lives and devastated villages downstream, was sparked by the rupture of a tailings dam owned by Samarco, 50% of which is controlled by BHP.

The high court's judgment, penned by Mrs Justice O'Farrell, held that BHP was responsible for the collapse, despite not owning the dam at the time. The ruling, which spans over 200 pages, deemed the risk of the dam failing "foreseeable" and noted that "obvious signs" had been ignored.

The devastating consequences of the disaster are still being felt today, with the Doce River - a major waterway revered by the Krenak Indigenous people as a deity - yet to recover from the toxic sludge released during the collapse. The ruling brings 600,000 Brazilians one step closer to securing compensation for damages estimated at over Β£36 billion.

BHP has vowed to appeal the decision and defend itself against the UK group action, while Samarco, which is also half-owned by Vale, had already reached a multibillion-dollar settlement with Brazil's federal government just days before the trial began. The agreement meant that Samarco would pay 132 billion reais (Β£19 billion) over two decades to compensate for human, environmental, and infrastructure damage.

The UK court ruling has significant implications for BHP and its Brazilian operations, as it opens the door for further compensation claims in the country. As the second phase of the trial determines damages, the fate of millions of Brazilians hangs in the balance.

omg this is crazy a dam collapse killing people & destroying the environment 🀯 like what if they had just done some basic safety checks? i'm glad the UK court found them liable tho πŸ’Έ 600 million ppl getting compensation sounds amazing but i'm also thinking about all the villages that still need help rebuilding 🌎 and isnt this related to some other mining thing in australia too bhp has a lot of operations all over the world πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

idk about this ruling being a total win for 600k brazilians... i mean, Β£36 billion is a lot but Β£19 billion from samarco already kinda did that job, right? plus, bhp's saying they'll appeal so who knows how long it takes to actually get paid. also, 200 pages of rulings feels like a lot... are we sure this is the end of it? and what about other mining companies in brazil? don't they deserve some compensation too? πŸ€”πŸ’Έ

man this is crazy 600 million ppl gonna get some kinda payout thats wild πŸ’Έ but at the same time its like BHP wasnt really held accountable for the first place they had a settlement with Brazil just days before trial started thats fishy πŸ€” i guess this ruling is a step in the right direction tho maybe companies gotta face the music for their actions instead of getting away with it all the time πŸ™

just thought about this news and idk how could bhp be so reckless 😩, i mean they own half of samarco but still they dont care about the environment 🌎. its like they think money is more important than human lives πŸ’Έ. any way this ruling might help the 600k brazilians affected by the dam collapse and im glad the uk court is taking a stand against bhp πŸ‘. wonder if bhp will really appeal this decision or just hide behind their lawyers πŸ€”. btw i remember when this disaster happened in 2015, it was all over the news πŸ“° but now its like we're seeing justice being served for the first time πŸ’ͺ.

idk what's going on with dams... like isn't that just a safety thing? πŸ€” i mean, can't they just prevent accidents from happening in the first place? πŸ™„ so 600k people are gonna get paid out tho which is pretty cool i guess πŸ’Έ but Β£36 billion is like whoa... what even is that much money? 😲 does anyone know how that gets divided among all those ppl? πŸ€‘

OMG 🀯 u gotta believe this landmark ruling is EVERYTHING!!! πŸ’₯ The fact that BHP's got liability for the 2015 dam collapse in Brazil is just wild 🀯 I mean, 19 lives lost and villages destroyed... it's like they're getting what's coming to them πŸ€‘ The UK court's decision will definitely pave the way for those affected to get compensation πŸ’Έ I'm loving that Samarco paid Β£19 billion to Brazil, but still, BHP gotta feel this πŸ˜‚. Can't wait to see how this second phase of trial goes down πŸ€”

I'm shocked by this landmark ruling 🀯, it's like a punch to the gut. BHP has finally been held accountable for one of the worst industrial disasters of our time πŸŒͺ️. 600,000 Brazilians are going to get some justice 😊, and that's something no amount of money can buy. I mean, what kind of company ignores obvious signs of a dam failure? It's like they thought they were above the law πŸ’₯.

I'm glad the UK court was willing to take on this massive case πŸ™, it's about time someone did. Now BHP is going to have to face the music and deal with these damages 😬. The fact that Samarco settled with Brazil just days before the trial is just a slap in the wrist compared to what's happening here πŸ‘Š.

It's not just about the money though πŸ’Έ, it's about making sure this kind of thing never happens again 🚫. We need companies like BHP to be held to higher standards and take responsibility for their actions 🀝. This ruling is a step in the right direction πŸ’ͺ, but there's still so much work to be done 🌟.

Yaaas, can you believe this ?? 🀩 The UK court just ruled that BHP is responsible for the devastating dam collapse in Brazil?! 😱 I mean, 19 lives lost and a whole ecosystem destroyed... it's crazy! πŸ‘€ And now they're gonna pay out Β£36 billion to the people affected? πŸ’Έ That's like, a lot of dollars!!! πŸ’Έ My heart goes out to those Brazilians who are still suffering from this disaster. πŸ€• I'm so glad that justice is finally being served. BHP needs to step up and take responsibility for their actions! πŸ‘Š

Ugh 😩 this is just getting crazy! 36 billion pounds for one disaster? That's insane πŸ’Έ and what really gets me is that Samarco paid only Β£19 billion to Brazil's government before this ruling 🀯 like, isn't that a slap in the face to those affected by the dam collapse?! The fact that BHP still wants to appeal the decision makes my blood boil πŸ”₯. I just want to see some real justice served and compensation for all the people who lost their homes and livelihoods because of this disaster πŸ€•

Ugh 😩 this is so messed up... just thinkin bout all those people affected by that dam collapse and now they're gonna get some kinda payout thanks to a UK court... but what's the point? BHP's already appealin and tryin to wriggle outta it πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And Samarco was already settlin with Brazil's gov for like 19 billion... meanwhile, the river's still toxic and people are sufferin πŸ’”. It's just so frustrating 😑

omg what a huge win 4 the ppl affected by dat disaster πŸ’― i'm so hyped 2 see justice being served even tho it's taken like 10 yrs 2 get here πŸ•°οΈ bhp is gonna appeal but it's already too late for them imo they should've been held accountable from da start πŸ’” 600k Brazilians r now 1 step closer 2 getting the compensation dey deserve πŸ’Έ let's hope da damage has recovered a lil bit by den 🌿

πŸ€” so this is crazy! BHP gets bashed by a UK court for a disaster that happened in Brazil like 10 years ago... but here's the thing, why did it take so long to get to this point? Like, when was the first lawsuit filed? And what about all the other mining companies involved, aren't they getting a piece of the action too? I need some sources on this and more info about how this settlement came about πŸ“ŠπŸ’Έ

omg, finally some justice is served πŸ™Œ those bhp folks were dodging responsibility for ages πŸ€₯ they knew their dam was gonna blow and still did nothing about it πŸ˜’ and now 600k brazilians are getting some kinda compensation πŸ’Έ about time too, 36 billion pounds is a lotta cash πŸ€‘ and btw, why didnt the uk court check on bhp sooner? shouldn't that be standard procedure? πŸ€”

oh man 🀯 this is crazy... like 36 billion pounds is a huge amount of money πŸ’Έ and for what? a dam collapse that killed people and polluted rivers 🌊 it's so sad to think about the families of the victims who will never see justice served πŸ˜” and now BHP is gonna appeal? come on guys, can't they just pay up? πŸ€‘

I'm not surprised about this landmark ruling 🀯, reminds me of the Exxon Valdez oil spill back in '87... I mean, who would've thought that a mining giant like BHP could be held accountable for such destruction? It's a good thing the UK court system is still got some backbone πŸ’ͺ. The 600,000 Brazilians are finally going to get some justice, and it's about time ⏰. But this ruling also raises questions about corporate accountability... just like with BP after Deepwater Horizon πŸ€”. I hope BHP takes responsibility for their actions and pays up πŸ’Έ, but if they do end up appealing, it'll be a long and drawn-out process... maybe even longer than the 20-year settlement Samarco had to pay πŸ•°οΈ.
