Minneapolis ICE Shooting: Local Attorneys Demand Access to Evidence, Citing FBI-Exclusive Investigation.
The deadly shooting of Renee Good by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on January 7th has left local attorneys feeling shut out of the investigation. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty expressed concern that state investigators will not have access to federal evidence, including Good's car, which was shot during the incident.
According to Moriarty, the FBI currently holds this evidence, and her office is "really none" in terms of accessing it. As a result, they are now urging the public to come forward with any information or evidence that may be relevant to the case. A website has been set up where people can submit their findings.
Meanwhile, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison stated that his office is collaborating with the state's attorney general's office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to gather and review all available evidence. However, he warned that it would be impossible to reach a conclusion in good faith due to the sheer volume of remaining evidence.
The local attorneys' concerns have led them to question why the investigation is being conducted exclusively by federal authorities without any state involvement. As Moriarty noted, "We want to make sure [the evidence] gets gathered and collected, and we'll deal with those other matters of joint versus exclusive later."
