Monique Ryan urges Australia to fast track medical innovation funding as Trump guts research

Australia's Labor government under pressure to fast-track medical innovation funding as Trump cuts US research.

Independent MP Monique Ryan has called on the Albanese administration to release more of the $20 billion Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) earnings, urging them to take advantage of a growing vacuum in cutting-edge medical research caused by US President Donald Trump's slashing of government-funded research in the country. The fund's average annual rate of return has outperformed its benchmark since 2015 and Ryan believes increasing the annual disbursement amount would boost life-saving innovation.

Research by the Parliamentary Budget Office indicates that the MRFF's total value will grow to at least $30.1 billion over a decade, assuming an annual release of just $1 billion for research funding. Ryan argues that this could secure the future of Australia's research sector and deliver better health outcomes for all Australians.

The push for more funding has been backed by leading research organizations, including the Group of Eight universities, the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes, and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. A delegation visiting Parliament House on Thursday includes representatives from several top research institutions, highlighting the urgent need for increased support.

Ryan's concerns echo Trump's own moves to slash funding and staff appointments at the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The US president has replaced experienced scientists with loyalists and individuals without medical or scientific training. Australian researchers have had long-standing links to trusted US health institutions, including the CDC, which are now under threat.

The survival of world-class research institutes in Australia is also at risk. The Australian Association of Medical Research Institutes reported that many of its member organizations would cease to be financially viable within five years without more support. Ryan will highlight several research proposals that have been denied funding, including a clinical trial on pregnancy for women with sleep apnea and a study on the management of post-traumatic amnesia.

The establishment of an Australian Centre for Disease Control is close to being passed by parliament, but Ryan's calls for increased MRFF funding remain unanswered. The government must act quickly to address the growing vacuum in medical research caused by Trump's cuts and ensure that Australia continues to be a leader in life-saving innovation.

ummm... so like australia has this huge fund for medical research and it's doing pretty well but the labrador gov is being kinda slow about releasing more money into it πŸ€”πŸ’Έ i feel like they should just give more cause trumps cutting funding in usa might be a thing now... that's kinda worrying tho. we need to keep our researchers happy or else... idk what's gonna happen...

πŸ€” I think it's super important that the Aussie gov't doesn't let Trump's US moves affect their own medical funding. If they don't boost the MRFF earnings, we'll lose some of the top research talent and innovative projects that could save lives. It's not just about the $20 billion, but also about preserving Australia's rep in global health research πŸŒŽπŸ’‘ The gov't needs to take action ASAP to fill this funding gap before it's too late!

I think its gotta be a big deal how Aussie gov is being forced to step up with more funding for med research after Trump basically tanks US research 🀯. I mean, we're talkin about a $20 billion fund just beggin to be tapped into, and those top researchers are already sayin we need to act fast or risk losin the expertise & innovation that's keepin us ahead of the game πŸ’Ό. Its like, Trump's slashin' funding left & right, but Aussie gov is like, "nah, we got this" πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. But seriously, we can't afford to be complacent here – the future of life-saving research is at stake πŸ”¬. The US is basically takin its brainpower to China or somethin' if Trump keeps slashin' those CDC funds πŸ’Έ. We need Aussie gov to step up & fill that void ASAP πŸ‘Š.

omg, this is crazy! 🀯 Australia is literally on the verge of losing its edge in med research due to Trump's US government slash fest πŸ€‘. The fact that Australia's Labor gov't is being called out for not doing enough with the $20 billion MRFF earnings is, like, totally valid. I mean, who wouldn't want to invest in life-saving innovation? πŸ’Š It's a total no-brainer. And to think Trump is just gonna keep gutting research funding and hiring non-scientists... it's just sad πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. The pressure on the Aussie gov't to fast-track more MRFF funding is, like, totally justified. We need to make sure our researchers are able to do their thing without being held back by Trump's policies πŸ’ͺ.

man... this is worrying me 🀯 australia's got some serious cash tied up in the mrff and trump's just gonna make things worse for them? $20 billion is a decent chunk of change, but if they don't keep putting out more cash for research it's gonna fall behind the us 🚫. i mean, trumps just slashin' all that funding at the cdc and replacein' people with nothin' to do but wonder what hit 'em... it's like he's tryin' to slow down some serious medical breakthroughs πŸ˜”.

anyway, monique ryan's got a point here. if australia doesn't step up its game, those top research institutions are gonna fold and the country's gonna be left high and dry πŸ€•. not to mention all the sick people who need better treatment for things like sleep apnea and post-traumatic amnesia... this is somethin' we should be worried about πŸ’Έ

🀯 I'm all about the Maximalist approach when it comes to funding our research institutions, ya know? We gotta make sure we're not just keeping up with the Joneses, but actually leading the pack! πŸš€ With Trump slashing US research funding like it's nobody's business, Australia's got a sweet opportunity to swoop in and fill that vacuum. I mean, think about it - our MRFF is already killing it, outperforming its benchmark since 2015, so why not give more love? πŸ’Έ It's time for the Labor government to listen to Monique Ryan and take action! πŸ’ͺ If we don't secure those research grants, who knows what groundbreaking innovations will get lost in the void? πŸ€” Not on my watch, mate! We need that $20 billion to be working overtime, like a well-oiled machine! πŸ”§

It seems like Australia's got a golden opportunity to boost their medical research 🌟! With the US president slashing research funding, it'd be crazy not to capitalize on this void πŸ’Έ. I mean, if we can tap into the $20 billion Medical Research Future Fund earnings and make it grow to at least $30 billion in just 10 years... that's a pretty sweet deal πŸ€‘! Monique Ryan's right, we should definitely release more funds for life-saving research projects like the one on pregnancy for women with sleep apnea 😌. It's time for Australia to step up and become a leader in medical innovation πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ€” I think it's great that Monique Ryan is pushing for more funding for the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF). The fact that the fund's earnings have outperformed its benchmark since 2015 is definitely a positive sign πŸ“ˆ. With the US cutting back on research funding, Australia should be taking advantage of this opportunity to boost life-saving innovation πŸ’‘.

I'd love to see the government take action and release more of the MRFF earnings to support research institutions in Australia. It's not just about saving money, but also about investing in the health and well-being of our citizens 🌟. With leading research organizations like the Group of Eight universities and the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes backing Ryan's calls, I think there's a strong case for increased funding πŸ’Ό.

The fact that Trump has replaced experienced scientists with loyalists is concerning πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Australia should be supporting its own researchers and medical institutions, rather than relying on their expertise to fill gaps created by US cuts 🀝. Let's hope the government takes a proactive approach to address this issue ASAP ⏱️!

I'm loving how Aussie researchers are stepping up their game while the US is kinda... tanking theirs πŸ€”πŸ’Έ It's like, I get why there's pressure on the Labor government to fast-track medical innovation funding, but I also think we should be careful not to copy Trump's whole ' slash and burn' approach 😬. Those US researchers are getting left high and dry, and it's only a matter of time before Australia fills the void πŸš€.

The fact that Monique Ryan is pushing for more MRFF funding is totally on point – all those life-saving innovations need some serious cash injection πŸ’Έ. And I'm glad to see top research orgs like the Group of Eight universities backing her up πŸŽ“.

But at the same time, let's not forget that Australia's got its own strengths and weaknesses 🀝. We can't just copy US models without making sure it works for us too πŸ‘. It's all about finding a balance between supporting our research sector while also keeping things fresh and innovative πŸ”₯.

I think its totally reasonable that Monique Ryan is pushing for more of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) earnings to be released, especially given how much Trump has cut back on US government-funded research πŸ€”. Its like, if Australia wants to stay ahead in medical innovation, we need to invest in it now! πŸ’Έ And with the MRFF's returns outperforming its benchmark since 2015, its clear that releasing more of the earnings would be a smart move for our country's health outcomes πŸ₯.

I mean, imagine all those research proposals getting denied funding because the government isn't willing to take a chance on them - it's just not worth the risk πŸ’”. We need to act fast and secure our future as leaders in medical research, before its too late! ⏰ And what's worse is that Trump's cuts are causing some of our top health institutions to lose trust and confidence in the US system πŸ€•. Its time for Australia to step up and take responsibility for its own research sector πŸ’ͺ.

omg what's goin on 🀯 australia is like literally the only place with this amazing med research fund πŸ€‘ monique ryan is right tho we cant let trump ruin everything in the us and now australia gets all the benefits πŸ™ 20 billion dollars is insane πŸ’Έ if they just release more of that earnings it could make a huge diff for life savin' meds & stuff πŸ€– we need to keep pushin' the gov to act fast πŸ’ͺ or else who knows what'll happen to our research insts πŸ“šπŸ”¬

🀯 this is crazy! πŸ€‘ they're basically saying US President Donald Trump has ruined their chance to get good funding for research and now it's up to them to figure out how to catch up? πŸ’” how can you just sit back and let the world pass you by like that? πŸ™„ i mean, $30 billion is a lot of money but come on! they need to step up and take action. this is all about Australia's future health and wellbeing, it shouldn't be about keeping up with what others are doing. we're better than that! πŸ’ͺ

Umm this is a big deal! 🀯 Australia's got like, $20 billion set aside for meds research & Monique Ryan is saying we should be like "hey US, why so mean to your scientists?" πŸ˜‰ But seriously, it makes sense that if they're cutting funding everywhere else, the US would create a void for other countries like us to step up. I mean, we've got a pretty solid system here. The research orgs are all backing her up & stuff, but what's the real number here? Is it just more cash or is there some actual strategy behind this? πŸ€”

omg u wont bliev wht Trump just did 2 US CDC lol but seriously, aussies rnt doin much better w/ aus gov cutting back on med research funding too πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜” they gotta step up the game! i mean, think bout all those ppl w/ sleep apnea or post-traumatic amnesia whos lives cud be saved w/ that kinda research πŸ’‰πŸ§  if they release more of that $20billion med research future fund earnings it cud make a HUGE difference πŸ“ˆπŸ’Έ

I'm getting pretty worried about our Australian research sector, especially with Trump's US cuts 🀯. $20 billion is a lot of dough for med research, but if we just tap into it more often, I reckon we can create some real game-changers πŸ§¬πŸ’‘. The fact that the MRFF's returns are already outperforming its benchmark since 2015 should give us all hope 😊. We need more of this cash to secure our future in life-saving innovation.

omg i cant believe trump is doing this 🀯 the US is literally cutting its own legs off when it comes to medical research i mean what are they even thinking? australia is already making moves to fill the gap with the mrff and now we just gotta hope our gov keeps up the good work πŸ’ͺ monique ryan sounds like a total boss btw, im all for her advocating for more funding πŸ€‘ its crazy how much of a difference an extra billion dollars can make, especially when it comes to life-saving research and clinical trials 🎯

omg like what's going on with trump's research fund cut 🀯 i mean i got my research papers from university last week and they were super expensive but i guess some ppl gotta pay the piper right? anyways, australia needs more $$$ for medical innovation tho, it's like monique ryan said... $20 billion isn't a lot if ppl are gonna be making millions off of investments πŸ€‘ plus, it's crazy that researchers in usa are being replaced by loyalists who don't even have med science training πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ anywayz, hope australia stays ahead on this research game πŸ’―

omg what's going on with US research lol 🀯 anyone else think it's wild how trump is just slashing funding left & right? πŸ˜‚ so australia's labor gov is under pressure to fast track medical innovation funding or risk losing out on that sweet $20 billion mrff earnings πŸ’Έ they're talking 30.1 billion total value over a decade if they just throw in another billion each year πŸ€” which sounds like a solid plan to me πŸ’Š hopefully our aussie researchers can stay ahead of the game & keep making life-saving innovations πŸ’₯

The Aussie gov't is getting low-key roasted for not putting more cash into med research πŸ€‘πŸ‘€ It's like they're letting the US set the bar on who gets funding and when...not cool, Monique Ryan says πŸ‘Ž Trump's slashing of US research funds has created a "vacuum" in cutting-edge medical innovation, and Australia's gotta step up its game πŸš€ The MRFF's already raking it in, but still, $1b an' year ain't enough πŸ’Έ These top researchers are calling out the gov't for not putting their foot down on this...they're not exactly being shy about it πŸ˜…
