Mount Sinai fires nurses for ‘sabotaging’ emergency strike drills. Their union says it was retaliation.

Three nurses employed at the labor and delivery department of New York's Mount Sinai Hospital were fired for allegedly sabotaging emergency drills that took place in the days leading up to a hospital strike by the New York State Nurses Association. According to a spokesperson for the hospital, Lucia Lee, the three nurses hid medical supplies intended for temporary replacement staff hired during the strike.

Lee claimed the actions of the terminated workers constituted "unacceptable behavior" and posed an undue risk to vulnerable newborn patients. However, the union representing the fired nurses vehemently disputed these allegations, arguing that the firings were part of a broader campaign by hospital management to intimidate and retaliate against striking nurses.

The New York State Nurses Association stated that mounting evidence indicates Mount Sinai's administration is employing tactics amounting to "union busting." The union accused the hospital of prioritizing its financial interests over addressing the legitimate demands of nurses, including improved staffing levels and security measures. The group has filed multiple unfair labor practice charges against Mount Sinai at the National Labor Relations Board.

In a statement made during a rally outside the hospital, Liliana Prestia, one of the fired nurses, emphasized that the firings were an attempt to silence and marginalize striking workers but stated she was not intimidated: "We will continue to fight."

Since the strike began on Monday, thousands of nurses have been participating in demonstrations across various hospitals managed by Mount Sinai Health System. The ongoing labor dispute centers around wages, health benefits, and staffing levels. Negotiations between the hospital and union leaders were suspended as part of the strike but are scheduled to resume later this week.

The temporary replacement staff has allowed the affected hospitals to maintain patient care services during the strike; however, some argue that these measures represent an inefficient use of resources and undermine efforts by nurses to achieve improved working conditions.

🤔 The whole thing seems kinda fishy to me... Like, you'd think a hospital would want to ensure its patients are safe no matter what's going on with the staff. But at the same time, I get why the union is all upset - it sounds like management is trying to strong-arm them into doing things their way. And let's be real, hospitals are already under so much pressure... it's not like they can just ignore the nurses' concerns forever. 🤷‍♀️ What do you guys think? Should the hospital be more willing to listen to what the nurses want?

🤕 I'm really troubled by what's going on at Mount Sinai Hospital. It's like they're more concerned with their bottom line than with taking care of the people who are doing the actual work - the patients. I mean, hiding medical supplies from temporary replacement staff? That's not just unacceptable, it's also super reckless and could have put lives at risk. And now these three nurses are losing their jobs over it? It's like they're being scapegoats for a system that's clearly broken.

The union is right to say that this is all about union busting - it's a way for hospital management to silence workers who are fighting for better wages, health benefits, and staffing levels. And let's not forget, thousands of nurses are out on strike, holding rallies and protesting outside the hospital. It's like they're being silenced, but they're not going down without a fight.

The thing is, this isn't just about these three nurses or Mount Sinai Hospital - it's about the entire healthcare system. We need to make sure that patients receive proper care, regardless of whether there are strikes or power struggles between management and workers. It's time for us to take sides and demand better from our hospitals. 💪

I'm so done with hospitals prioritizing profits over people 🤯. These three nurses were just trying to stand up for themselves and their colleagues, and now they're being thrown under the bus 🔥. The union is right, this is all about "union busting" 💔. I mean, come on, hiding medical supplies? That's not sabotage, that's a last resort when you're fighting for fair wages and better working conditions 💪. It's not like they were trying to hurt anyone, just make a point 🗣️. And the fact that hospital management is denying this and claiming it's all about "unacceptable behavior"... please 😒. We need more nurses speaking out against these unfair labor practices 🤝.

Ugh I'm so worried about these 3 nurses 🤕 they were just trying to protect their patients, but got fired instead... I don't think it's fair at all that the hospital is gonna go after them like this 👊. It sounds like they're really trying to silence the nurses and make an example out of them 🙅‍♀️. I'm sure there are tons of people on the nurses' side who feel like the strike is necessary, and it's not just about the money or benefits... it's about having a safe and respectful place to work 💕. I mean, have you seen those news vids of the protests outside Mount Sinai? It looks like thousands of people showing up to support the nurses, which is amazing 😊. We need more solidarity with these brave women 🤗

🤔 This whole situation is super concerning - hospital management seems more interested in crushing union spirits than addressing legitimate staff concerns 🚑. The fact that they're hiding medical supplies meant for strike replacement staff just shows a complete lack of trust in their own employees 👊. I'm not surprised the union is calling it out as "union busting" 🚫, and it's even more galling that they're prioritizing profits over patient care 💸. The fact that thousands of nurses are taking to the streets to fight for fair wages and better working conditions shows just how passionate they are about their job 👩‍⚕️. It's time for hospital management to get real and take those demands seriously 📝

🤔 I'm a bit worried about what's happening at Mount Sinai Hospital. It seems like they're going all out against the union, and it's not just about silencing workers but also targeting their rights and safety. 💸 The idea that these three nurses might have hidden medical supplies to undermine staffing levels is pretty concerning. 🚑 It's like they're putting profits over people's lives.

I think this whole situation highlights a bigger issue – the lack of respect for workers' rights in our healthcare system. 🤝 We need to make sure that hospitals are prioritizing patient care, not just their bottom line. 💸 I'm hoping the union and hospital management can get back to the negotiating table soon and find a solution that benefits everyone involved.

The fact that thousands of nurses are taking part in demonstrations shows they're not afraid to stand up for what's right. 💪 They deserve our support and understanding during this challenging time. 🤝

omg u think its suspicious that they were fired after hiding medical supplies? 🤔 like what would be the point of doing that if they wanted to sabotage the drills? idk if i believe the hospital's version of events... those nurses seemed pretty brave for speaking out against the hospital's tactics 😊 and its not just about union busting, its also about prioritizing profits over people's lives... i feel bad for the patients who got affected by this strike 🤕

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... I mean what's up with hospital management? 🤯 They're prioritizing their own interests over actually listening to the workers' concerns. It's like, we get it, you want to make a profit, but at what cost? The fact that they would fire people for hiding medical supplies is just crazy - does that even make sense? 💁‍♀️ I don't think so. And now they're trying to blame the nurses for their own actions? Come on... 🙄 The union is right, this is all about intimidation and retaliation. It's just not okay. 😒

I'm really concerned about what's going on at Mount Sinai Hospital right now 🤕. It seems like they're using underhanded tactics to try and silence the striking nurses, which is just not cool 😒. I mean, hiding medical supplies? That's not okay, period 💉. And it's not just that - the union is saying that hospital management is basically trying to bust the union and intimidate workers into staying quiet. That's some serious shady stuff 🤥.

As a regular person, I think we should be supporting our nurses and advocating for better working conditions, not making their lives harder 👊. And it's not just about wages and benefits - it's about staffing levels too. We need to make sure that hospitals are prioritizing patient care over profits 💸. The fact that thousands of nurses are taking a stand and showing up to rallies is super inspiring, though 🎉. They're not going to let intimidation tactics get the best of them!

🤕 I feel really bad for those 3 nurses who got fired from Mount Sinai Hospital. It's so unfair that they're being accused of sabotaging emergency drills just because they were supporting the hospital strike. I mean, can't hospitals and unions just talk things out instead of turning it into a bigger issue? 🤔 The union is saying that the firings are part of a pattern of intimidation by hospital management, which could be true... but we need more info on that. 😐

I also don't think hiding medical supplies is a good look for anyone. I get why they might've wanted to prevent those temporary replacement staff from getting the job done, but it's not like they had to resort to sabotage. 💔 What if something had gone wrong during an emergency and there were no meds available because of this? 🚑

Anyway, I hope those fired nurses can continue fighting for better working conditions and wages without being silenced or retaliated against. They're speaking out for a reason, after all! 💪

I'm not buying it 🙄. Three nurses just gettin' let go for hidin' medical supplies? Sounds like a pretty serious accusation to me... I mean, what's the real story here? Hospitals always talkin' about patient safety and all that, but when you start lookin' into these things, it's all about who's got the upper hand 💸. If they're really that worried about newborn patients, why not just work out a fair deal with the nurses instead of playin' hardball? This whole union-bustin' thing just smells like corporate BS to me 🤖.
