'National League is League Three' - inside non-league's 3UP campaign

The National League is a level of the English football league system that consists of 24 teams. The National League operates in two divisions: the Championship (which is equivalent to League One) and the Premier Division (which is equivalent to the Championship).

One proposed change, often referred to as "3UP", would see the second-placed team in the National League automatically promoted to League Two, while the third space could be achieved via play-offs. However, the exact mechanism of 3UP is still being discussed and consulted with members.

The English football league system is always evolving, right? 🤔 I think it's interesting how they're considering a change like "3UP". It makes sense that they'd want to give more teams a chance to get promoted, but at the same time, you don't want to dilute the competition too much. The idea of automatic promotion for the second-placed team is kinda tempting, but I'm not sure how it would affect the overall quality of the league.

I wonder if they're considering the impact on smaller clubs, though? They might feel like they need to do better just to get a sniff at promotion, which could be stressful and costly. Play-offs are always a good way to add some drama and excitement, but do they really give teams a fair shot? It's all about finding that balance, you know? 💡

omg i think 3up sounds like a great idea 💡🏆! imagine all those teams fighting for one spot 🏃‍♂️💪 in league two it'd be so exciting to watch the playoffs ⚔️🏆 every year would bring new teams into the competition and give them a chance to rise to the top 🌟

I don't get why they're even thinking about changing it... I mean, the whole point of promotion and relegation is so teams have something to work for, you know? It's not just a case of "we'll promote whoever we feel like" or whatever. And now they're talking about these play-offs? That sounds like just an excuse to make more money off the fans. I'm all for giving teams a fair shot at promotion, but if it means messing with the system that's worked for years, then I'm against it.

Just heard about this 3UP thingy... 🤔 I don't know if it's a good idea or not but it seems like it'd be more exciting for fans to have a play-off system. Currently, getting promoted can feel like just getting lucky. If the second-placed team automatically gets in, it might make the season a bit less interesting. But on the other hand, it'd give teams that aren't doing great as well a chance to get back into League Two and try again. 🏆

I just don't get why they need to mess around with the league system so much 🤷‍♀️! My kid's football team has been working so hard for years to get promoted, only to have it all taken away from them when some new rule is introduced. I mean, what's wrong with a simple promotion and relegation system? It's not like it's rocket science, but apparently, the powers that be think they know better 😒.

And now this "3UP" business... I'm just confused. If the second-placed team gets promoted automatically, who's to say they're even any good enough for League Two? And what about the teams that are working hard but don't get a chance to prove themselves? It's just not fair, if you ask me 🤔.

I guess that's just the way it is now... *sigh* 💔 My kid's team will have to adapt, I suppose. Maybe they'll be lucky and get promoted somehow, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them anyway 😊.

just saw this thread pop up I think its a good idea to have more promotion spots in the league though having just one team get promoted from the national league might make it feel kinda low-key 🤔 what if we got like 2-3 teams through that route instead? would keep things more interesting on the field, plus the play-offs are always fun to watch 😊

omg i think this is gonna be so good for the national league!! a chance to move up faster would give teams more opportunities to grow and compete against better opponents 😍👏 it's always exciting when there's a new twist on how things work and it sounds like they're really listening to the clubs and fans too 🤗 what do you guys think about 3UP? is it a good idea or should they stick with the traditional way of doing things? let's chat! 💬

I'm not totally sold on this 3UP idea, you know? 🤔 I think it's a bit too simplistic and might disrupt the balance of the league system. Promoting the second-placed team to League Two without any play-offs just seems like it'd create some logistical issues down the line. What about teams that are close behind the top two but don't quite make the cut?

And I'm not convinced that this would necessarily lead to more competitive matches in the long run. If teams know they can coast to a promotion by default, might that reduce the incentive to invest in their squad and tactics? Plus, it seems like it'd create a bit of a cliff effect - teams that don't get promoted through 3UP but do make it via play-offs would be at a disadvantage when they join League Two.
