Nets bench two first-round picks in final quarter of failed comeback bid

Brooklyn Nets bench rookie first-round pick Egor Dëmin for entire fourth quarter as they fall to Hawks.

The Brooklyn Nets' season has been focused on development, with five rookies - including Egor Dëmin and Ben Saraf - making significant contributions. However, in a disappointing 117-112 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, coach Jordi Fernández made an unconventional decision: benching his two first-round picks for veteran players Tyrese Martin and Terance Mann during the final quarter.

Martin had a strong game, scoring 13 points and grabbing five rebounds, including eight points and four boards in the crucial fourth quarter. Mann also played well, finishing with 11 points and six assists, as he handled the ball more effectively than Dëmin struggled.

Fernández explained that Martin was "awesome" and rewarded him for his great summer and recent form, stating that the focus should be on team performance rather than individual players' contributions. However, this decision raised questions about Dëmin's role in the team, particularly given his limited involvement in the fourth quarter.

Dëmin had four points on 1-of-6 shooting to finish minus-18, and surprisingly still hadn't taken a shot inside the arc this season. Fernández acknowledged that he needed to improve, admitting that he wanted him to touch the paint more and play off both feet.

The Nets' young core has been touted as key to their future success, but they have struggled with consistency and decision-making on the court. Michael Porter Jr., another rookie point guard, echoed Fernández's sentiments, saying that a solidified point guard position is crucial for winning in the NBA.

In related news, Day'Ron Sharpe became the third player in NBA history to record 500 career offensive rebounds before reaching his 3,000th minute since boards started being tracked.

🤔 I don't get why they gotta bench Dëmin in the fourth quarter like that 🙄. I mean, he's a rookie and yeah, he's still learning, but what's the point of giving him zero playing time when it matters most? It feels like coach Fernández is more worried about winning games than developing his young players 💸. And another thing, 1-of-6 shooting is not that bad 🤷‍♂️. I think Dëmin needs a bit more time to find his groove, not be sat on the bench for an entire quarter 😔. It's like they're gonna have to work on their decision-making if they wanna win consistently 📈.

Ugh, come on 🙄... I get what Jordi Fernández is tryin' to do, but benchin' two first-round picks for the entire fourth quarter? That's just whack 💁‍♂️. Egor Dëmin was strugglin' but he's still a rookie, you gotta give him time to figure it out 🤯. And what's with the focus on individual players instead of team performance? Like, we get it, Martin and Mann played well, but that don't mean they should be benched for an entire quarter 🔥. The young core is supposed to be the future of this team, so let's not sweep Dëmin under the rug just yet 😐. And can we talk about how inconsistent the Nets are? They need to work on their decision-makin' and comin' together as a team 🤦‍♂️.

man this net benching decision by fernández is super puzzling 🤔...egor demin was doing just fine out there and suddenly gets benched for like two vets who weren't even on fire? tyrese martin was having a good game, no problem, but what about demin's development? fernández is all about team performance and growth, so why not give the rookies some more time to shine? maybe it's just a case of fernández trying out different lineups, but for now, i'm left wondering if demin's future with the nets is even secure 🤷‍♂️

I'm kinda surprised by that move from Coach Fernández. I get what he's saying about team performance and individual contributions, but it feels like they're still trying to figure out Egor Dëmin's role. The dude had a rough game, but you can't just bench him for an entire quarter like that 🤔. It's like, what's the plan for his development? They need to give him more time to grow and learn from their mistakes. And yeah, Martin and Mann did play well, but it's not like they're the only ones who can contribute. The young core is gonna have to step up if they wanna make a push for the playoffs 🚀💪

Man, this decision by Coach Fernández has got me thinking... You know, it's like life, we gotta learn to share the spotlight sometimes 🤯. Egor Dëmin is still young and learning, but he needs to take ownership of his game too 💪. It's not about being benched for one quarter, it's about making adjustments and growing as a player.

And let's be real, the Hawks played a solid game, they deserved that W 😊. But what's important is how we learn from our mistakes and move forward. Maybe this is an opportunity for Dëmin to re-evaluate his strategy and come back stronger. It's all about growth, guys 🌱.

I'm low-key worried about Egor Dëmin's future with the team 🤔. I get what coach Fernández is saying about focusing on team performance and individual players' contributions not mattering as much, but it feels like a cop-out to bench him for the entire fourth quarter. Dëmin has been hyped up as one of the top rookie picks for a reason, and to see him go that cold after just four minutes of playing time is kinda weird 🤷‍♂️.

I think this decision raises some questions about how Fernández sees his role in the team unfolding. Is he not ready for more responsibility? Or was it just a calculated move to try and boost morale or something? It's also interesting that Michael Porter Jr. mentioned having a solidified point guard position being crucial for winning - maybe this is an opportunity for the Nets to figure out who can fill that spot? 🤔

man... what's going on with these youngins in Brooklyn? 🤦‍♂️ I'm all for development and giving rookies chances, but come on, benching Egor Dëmin like that? 😱 he looks so lost out there on the court. i get it, Tyrese Martin played well, but that doesn't mean we gotta forget about Dëmin's skills... or lack thereof 😂. fernández needs to figure out what's going on with his point guard situation 'cause they're not gonna win a championship with this kinda inconsistency 🤔. michael porter jr seems right on the money though - solid point guard play is key 💪. and day'ron sharpe, nice to see some old-school numbers 😎

omg i dont get why coach fernández did that 🤔!! i mean, egor dëmin was supposed to be a part of the future of this team and now he's just sitting on the bench for the whole fourth quarter? 😬 it looks like ben saraf got more playtime than him despite being a rookie too 🙄

i feel bad for dëmin though, fernández is right that his role needs to change but like, why not give him some chances to prove himself first? 🤷‍♂️ and what's with the lack of involvement in the paint? it's like he's never played there before 🔮

maybe they need to work on building a stronger team dynamic or something? idk 🤔 but this decision is just confusing 🙃

I'm totally on Egor Dëmin's side here 🤔. I think Jordi Fernández made a huge mistake benching him for the entire fourth quarter. Dëmin might not have had the best game, but he's still just 19 and in his first season, you know? He needs to learn from his mistakes, and that's exactly what he was doing on the court - trying new things and experimenting with different moves.

Martin and Mann got their playing time, yeah, but it feels like they're older and more established. What's the point of having a young core if we're just gonna hand out starts to guys who are 25 and 27? Can't we let Dëmin and Ben Saraf grow into their roles without being forced to carry the team on their own shoulders every single game?

And btw, Day'Ron Sharpe getting 500 career offensive rebounds is cool and all 🙄, but I'd rather see some actual wins than just stats. The Nets need to find a way to balance individual development with team success.

omg what r u even gonna do bro?? 🤯 Dëmin was benched for whole 4th qtr and it's like Fernández is tryna give up on him lol idk wut went thru dat kid's mind he had 1 of 6 shots and still managed to get minus 18 📉👎 Martin and Mann played way better and they got rewarded 4 it which sucks cuz Dëmin needed that playtime 2 develop his game like michael porter jr said already a solid point guard is key 2 winning nba championships tho 😏

omg this decision by Jordi Fernández is lowkey mindblowing 🤯 I'm all about development, but benching Dëmin for an entire quarter was a major move... like, what's the plan for Egor? He had 4 points in that last quarter and looked so lost out there 🤦‍♂️ Tyrese Martin's game was straight fire tho, he deserves those minutes for sure! 👏 Also, I'm loving Michael Porter Jr.'s take on having a solidified point guard position... we need to get our act together as a team 💪 And congrats to Day'Ron Sharpe on that 500th off-rebound milestone 🎉

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this benching decision 🤔... it's like, okay, we get it, coach wants to win games, but what about Egor Dëmin's growth and development as a player? It feels like he was benched just when he needed some real playing time. And I'm not buying the "team performance" excuse - if they're gonna rely on Martin and Mann in crunch time, that says a lot about the rest of the team's decision-making 🤷‍♂️. But hey, at least Day'Ron Sharpe is breaking records 💪... now let's get back to seeing our rookies thrive!

🤔 Just don't get why they bench Dëmin in crunch time... I feel like he's got game 🏀 but maybe needs to work on his confidence? Meanwhile, Martin and Mann are getting the nod... does that mean Dëmin is being benched because of his struggles with shooting inside the arc? 🤷‍♂️

🤔 I'm kinda surprised they didn't give Egor Dëmin more court time, you know? He's a rookie with so much potential and it feels like he's still trying to find his groove. But at the same time, I get why coach Fernández made that decision - Tyrese Martin was on fire and the team needed those points in the 4th quarter. It's all about finding what works for the team, you feel? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe Dëmin just needs to work on his game sense a bit more, play off both feet like coach said... but still, it's a bummer he didn't get more opportunities in such a crucial game 🎯.

omg what's going on with the Nets? 🤯 they're trying to develop their young core but it feels like coach Fernández is not giving them enough playing time 😔 especially Egor Dëmin who had a major meltdown in that 4th quarter 📉 -12 minutes, that's crazy! 💥 I think he needs to work on his ball-handling skills and confidence ⚡️. Meanwhile, Tyrese Martin and Terance Mann are killing it on the court 🎯🔥. Maybe Fernández is trying to send a message about teamwork over individual performance? 🤝 idk but this decision has me curious 😁. Anyone else think Dëmin needs more time in the game? 🤔

awww poor Egor 🤕 he's been doing a great job but it looks like he still got some work to do 📚 coach Fernández is tryin to give him some space to grow and improve 💪 and you can't blame the dude for wantin to see his vets make a play 😂 day'ron sharpe tho is just on another level 🤯 500 career offensive rebounds? that's insane! 🙌 anyway, i got faith in Egor he'll bounce back from this 👍

🤔 so the nets are like all about development and growth but then they bench their rookies in crunch time? 🚫 it's one thing to say that team performance is more important than individual player contributions, but to actually put your best players on the court when it matters most? that just doesn't add up. 👀 i mean, Dëmin only had 4 points and was minus-18... what exactly did Martin bring to the table that Dëmin didn't? 🤷‍♂️ also, isn't this decision kinda counterintuitive given that they're trying to develop their young core for the future? 🤔

I'm shocked, SHOCKED! 🤯 The Brooklyn Nets have decided to bench their rookie phenoms for veteran players... in the fourth quarter of a game where they're already losing. Like, what's next? Benching them for the entire off-season? 😂 Jordi Fernández says he wants to focus on team performance, but I think it's safe to say that Egor Dëmin and Ben Saraf just need to figure out how to be awesome without being benched... maybe by playing with more passion and less 'I'm a rookie and I don't know what I'm doing' face 🤪.

I don't get it 🤔... benching two rookies for vets in a crucial quarter feels like you're throwing them under the bus 🚮. I mean, sure, Martin and Mann played well, but shouldn't that be about playing their strengths? Dëmin's got some decent skills, he just needs to trust himself and play more freely 🔓. It's all about developing chemistry with his teammates and not overthinking it 🤦‍♂️. Coaches gotta find the right balance between experience and youth, but this feels like a bit too much of a swing in the other direction 😐
