New York Archdiocese installs new Archbishop Ronald Hicks at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

New York City's Archdiocese Welcomes New Archbishop Ronald Hicks

As the city's Roman Catholic population swells to over two million, the New York Archdiocese has named its new archbishop - Ronald Hicks. The 58-year-old cleric takes the reins from outgoing Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who has been at the helm for nearly two decades.

In a surprise move, Pope Leo XIV selected Hicks to succeed Dolan without invoking the traditional "white smoke" signal of papal approval. However, Hicks' credentials are impressive, having previously served as bishop of the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois and demonstrating a deep understanding of Catholic values.

At his press conference on Thursday, Hicks outlined his vision for the archdiocese, emphasizing the need to engage younger generations and revitalize the Church's relevance. "How do we pass our faith on to the next generation? How do we be a Church that is relevant, living, and beautiful?" he asked, echoing Pope Leo's call for unity.

Hicks' personal background is also noteworthy, having grown up just 14 blocks from Pope Leo's childhood home in Chicago. The new archbishop has also spent time as a missionary in El Salvador, speaking fluent Spanish - a skill that will likely serve him well in navigating the city's diverse Catholic community.

His centrist approach may prove challenging given the current polarized climate. However, Hicks' predecessor, Cardinal Dolan, has praised his selection, calling him "immensely qualified" for the position.

The formal installation ceremony is set to take place at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Friday, where Hicks will be formally consecrated as the new archbishop of New York.

im not sure if i love or hate the fact that pope leo selected him without the traditional "white smoke" signal lol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_smoke

anyway, i think hicks seems like a pretty cool guy - has lived in chicago his whole life and speaks fluent spanish 🇪🇸 https://www.chicagotribune.com/news...-20231228-2vq0e4mzrqbmdw7r6hjx3m5p-story.html

hopefully he can bring some unity to the catholic community in nyc - they deserve it 🙏

🙄 So another new face in a stuffy old job... I mean, what's the point of having a new archbishop when the city is already overflowing with Catholics? Like, two million people can't all just magically find themselves interested in church again after Cardinal Dolan retires. 🤦‍♂️ And this Hicks guy thinks he's gonna change things by talking about unity and being "relevant"? Please, he's just gonna be another out-of-touch cleric trying to pander to the younger crowd. 😒 I mean, who knows if he's even qualified for the job? The Pope didn't exactly give him a glowing review... 🙃

🙏 I can tell this new Archbishop Ronald Hicks is gonna bring some fresh vibes to NYC's Catholic scene 🌃. It's amazing that Pope Leo XIV chose him without the usual smoke signal – speaks volumes about their trust in his abilities 💯. With his background as bishop of Joliet and missionary work in El Salvador, I'm hyped he'll connect with the younger crowd & keep faith relevant 🔥. Can't wait to see how he navigates the city's diverse community, but overall, I'm feeling hopeful about this new chapter 🌈💖

omg i'm lowkey hyped about the new arcybosh Ronald Hicks!!! 🤩 he seems like a breath of fresh air, you know? all that talk about engaging younger gens and makin' the church relatable is kinda fire 🔥 especially w/ his spanish fluency - love how he's gettin' ready to dive into the diverse NYC scene! 🌎 on the flip side tho, the polarized climate might still throw him some curveballs... fingers crossed he can navigate it w/ his centrist vibe 💪

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda cool that Pope Leo XIV chose Archbishop Ronald Hicks without all the fanfare. I mean, who needs a lot of drama when you got someone with skills and experience, right? 🤔 What I like about this move is that Hicks seems like he's got his finger on the pulse of what young people want from their faith – making it relevant and beautiful again is no easy feat! 💖 His personal story is pretty inspiring too, having grown up just a block away from where Pope Leo grew up. It’s definitely a local connection that could help him navigate the city’s diverse community better. And hey, with his time as a missionary in El Salvador under his belt, he's already shown he can bridge cultural gaps – that's a valuable skill in this day and age 🌎.

omg u guys, i am literally SHAKING about ronald hicks being the new archbishop of new york!!! 😍🙌 i've been following him since he was bishop of joliet in illinois and he's always had this amazing aura around him. pope leo XIV is def making a great move by selecting him without that whole "white smoke" thing. i mean, Hicks has already shown he's got the goods, being fluent in spanish and all 😊. and can u believe he grew up just 14 blocks from pope leo's childhood home?!?! 🤯 it's like fate or something. i'm so down for his centrist approach - we need more unity in our church! 🌈💖

🤔 I'm intrigued by Ronald Hicks' centrist approach 🤝. As a city with over 2 million Catholics, NYC needs someone who can navigate the diverse community and bring people together 💕. His experience in Illinois and El Salvador is impressive 🌎. But what's interesting is that he's not invoking traditional papal approval... does this mean he'll have more autonomy? 🤔 And how will his youthful energy impact the archdiocese, especially with younger generations in mind? 🎉👥 One thing for sure, we're excited to see how he'll revitalize the Church's relevance! 🔥

🤔 I'm surprised they didn't go with a more traditional papal approval method, but you gotta give credit to Pope Leo for finding someone who knows what he wants without needing to resort to old-school vibes 🕊️. Ronald Hicks seems like the right guy for the job - he's got the right experience and values to tackle that 2 million-strong Catholic population in NYC 💸. Plus, his background is super diverse, which is a must given the city's crazy cultural landscape 🌎. I'm curious to see how he'll navigate all those young people who are more into spirituality than traditional church vibes, but if anyone can do it, it's Hicks 😊.

Wow, I'm interested in this pope's personal background 🤔. Growing up just 14 blocks from Pope Leo's childhood home in Chicago is pretty cool! 😎 And speaking fluent Spanish will definitely help him connect with the diverse Catholic community in NYC. His centrist approach might be a breath of fresh air in these polarized times 💡.

🙏 just saw that Ronald Hicks is the new Arch Archbishop of NYC and I gotta say he sounds like a total breath of fresh air 🌸! I mean, Pope Leo XIV's pick without all that papal smoke and mirrors is kinda cool 😎. The guy's got some serious experience under his belt, having served as bishop in Illinois and all, so I'm sure he'll know how to keep the Catholic faith alive in the Big Apple 🔥. And let's be real, being fluent in Spanish will definitely help him connect with that NYC Latinx community 💬! Can't wait to see what kind of changes he brings to the archdiocese #NewArchbishopOfNYC #RonaldHicks #UnityInAction

I don't usually comment but I'm kinda intrigued about this new archbishop guy 🤔. I mean, he's got some pretty cool credentials - bishop in Illinois and all that 🙏. But what's really interesting to me is how he's gonna navigate the city's diverse Catholic community. He's got Spanish skills, which is awesome, but at the same time, New York City can be super polarizing 😬. I'm wondering if his centrist approach is gonna help or hinder him in getting people on board. Still, it'll be cool to see how he shakes things up 🔄.

I'm so stoked that Pope Leo XIV chose Ronald Hicks as the new Archbishop of NY! 🙌 I mean, have you seen his credentials? Bishop of Joliet in Illinois and fluent Spanish from time spent as a missionary in El Salvador? Talk about a power move 🚀. But what really gets me excited is how he's focusing on engaging younger generations and revamping the Church's relevance - it's like he's speaking our language, you know? 💬 I'm loving his centrist approach too, it's about time we had a leader who's not afraid to take on tough conversations 🤝. And can we talk about how gorgeous St. Patrick's Cathedral is gonna look with him in its robes 🕊️? Overall, I think this is gonna be an awesome era for the NYC Archdiocese! 👏

I'm low-key hyped about this new gig for Archbishop Ronald Hicks 🤩! I mean, it's about time we got a fresh face in the big chair, right? The dude's got some serious street cred - serving as bishop in Illinois and all that jazz. Plus, his personal background is straight fire - growing up just a block from Pope Leo's childhood home? Talk about a baptism by fire (pun intended 🔥).

I'm curious to see how he'll shake things up in the archdiocese, though. With younger folks getting more into the faith and all that, I think it's time for the Church to get with the times. A centrist approach might be just what the doctor ordered, especially when you've got a polarized crowd like this city 🗽️.

One thing's for sure - this guy's gonna need some serious charm and charisma to win over the hearts (and minds) of New Yorkers. Wish him all the best, I guess! 🤞

I'm telling you something is off about this new archbishop, Ronald Hicks... like he was chosen by the Pope without even asking for a traditional blessing? 🙏 It's all too convenient. And what's up with his background in Joliet, Illinois, and being from Chicago where the Pope grew up? That's some suspiciously coincidental stuff right there. I mean, we know the Vatican has connections all over the world, but is this really just a coincidence?

And let's be real, Cardinal Dolan was basically saying that Hicks was "immensely qualified" without even questioning his true motives. It sounds like they're trying to keep something under wraps. The fact that Pope Leo XIV called for unity and Hicks echoed those words on his first press conference is just too neat... it's almost like he was programmed to say what the Vatican wants him to say.

I'm not buying it, folks. Something fishy is going on here, and I'll be keeping a close eye on this new archbishop. 🕵️‍♂️

just saw this news and gotta say i'm feelin positive about the new archbishop ronald hicks 🙏 he seems like a down-to-earth guy who really cares about his community and wants to make the church more relatable to younger folks, which is def needed in today's world. also love that he speaks fluent spanish - that's awesome for building bridges with ppl from different backgrounds. gotta trust that pope leo made a good pick 🤞

just saw this news about new york city getting a new archbishop 🙏... think it's cool that pope leo XIV chose him without all the usual fanfare. seems like hicks is trying to shake things up by talking about being relevant and engaging younger folks 👥 also, his background is pretty interesting - grew up near pope leo's childhood home in chicago! 💡 just hope he can navigate the polarized climate we're living in 😐

I'm curious about this new archbishop Ronald Hicks, I mean, 58? That's like, really young for a head honcho in the Catholic Church right? 🤔 I bet it'll be interesting to see how he navigates all those different communities and factions in NYC, especially with everything so polarized these days. 👀 He seems like a pretty smart guy, fluent Spanish and all, but I'm not sure if his centrist approach will really work given the way things are going on in the city. 🤷‍♂️ Still, gotta support the new leader of the flock, right? 💕

Ugh, another stuffy old dude taking over a prestigious role 🤔... I mean, what's next? The Pope himself coming back from the dead to give a pep talk to the Catholic community in NYC? 🙄 And this Hicks guy is like, "Oh look at me, I'm so progressive and young and hip" 💁‍♂️. Newsflash, Ronald: just because you're not Dolan doesn't mean you're automatically cool with everyone 😒.

And what's up with this whole "passing on faith to the next gen" thing? Like, how hard is it to have a basic conversation about spirituality without being all cheesy and inspirational 🤪. I'm sure Hicks will be just as cringeworthy at his press conference as he probably was during his missionary days in El Salvador 😳.

And let's not forget the whole "centrist approach" thing – sounds like code for "I'll do whatever it takes to keep the peace, even if it means compromising on actual values 🤷‍♂️. Fingers crossed Hicks doesn't bring too much more of that bland, corporate nonsense into the Archdiocese 😬.

On a related note, has anyone checked the dress code for this formal installation ceremony? I bet Hicks is already planning his bespoke suit to make him look like the ultimate power player 👗...

Ugh, another power play by the Vatican 🤔. I mean, who do they think they are, just picking anyone they want without even consulting the locals? And what's with this "centrist approach" vibe? Sounds like a total cop-out to me. They're trying to appeal to everyone and end up pleasing no one.

I'm also curious about Hicks' Spanish skills - is that really relevant for an archbishop in New York City? It seems like a bit of a token move to try to win over the city's diverse Catholic community. And what's with the emphasis on passing faith down to younger generations? Is that just code for "we need to get more converts"?

I don't know, man... I'm not exactly thrilled about this development 🤷‍♂️. It feels like another instance of the Church trying to adapt to changing times without actually listening to what people want. We'll see how it plays out, I guess.
