The NYC culinary scene is like 90% Puerto Rican now... I mean, it's not surprising, considering how many ppl from PR have moved there over the yrs. I've been to some great restaurants that serve amazing food, but sometimes it feels like they're all just variations of each other...
I think what's cool is that people are finally starting to appreciate the authentic flavors of Puerto Rican cuisine - not just the usual stuff you get at a Latinx restaurant. Like, have u tried those crispy tostones? They're LIFE.CHANGING.
But I'm also wondering if all this gentrification is gonna push out the old-school restaurants that have been serving up these classics for yrs... That would be a shame, 'cause NYC needs more of its Puerto Rican heritage.
I'm so over this "Puerto Rican culture has woven an unbreakable thread through the fabric of New York City" nonsense it's been happening for decades, people! We've had Puerto Rican restaurants and food vendors all over Manhattan and Brooklyn since the 1950s... that's not new news. And don't even get me started on this gentrification thing - it's not like it's a new issue or anything it's just another example of how cities have always been about displacement and gentrification.
But for real, though - it's awesome to see the NYC culinary scene celebrating its Puerto Rican heritage. I mean, who doesn't love some good bacalaitos or tostones? The fact that people are finally recognizing the importance of authentic, locally-sourced flavors is a step in the right direction. And with one in every five New Yorkers being Puerto Rican, it's about time we started taking this cuisine seriously. Maybe now we'll see some real representation and innovation in the culinary world... fingers crossed!
