New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd is fighting for his life after being shot in the early hours of Sunday morning on West 38th Street in Midtown. The 29-year-old was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
According to police, Boyd was shot in the abdomen during a dispute outside a restaurant that turned violent. Authorities are now searching for a suspect who fled the scene in a BMW X8 SUV and have not yet made any arrests. The NYPD released a statement saying they were aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd but would not make any further comment at this time.
Boyd, who plays mainly on special teams, has been with the Jets since March and was a seventh-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 after playing college football at Texas. He also spent time with the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals before joining his current team.
However, Boyd's focus on football may have given him an unexpected advantage as a result of his difficult childhood. As he once revealed, having overcome many challenges, including the loss of his father and grandmother who helped raise him, he has learned to appreciate life's little things and keep a positive outlook despite adversity.
The incident comes at a particularly tough time for the Jets, with recent losses including that of one of their most beloved players, Nick Mangold, who died at 41 while seeking a kidney transplant in October. The team had also lost defensive end Marshawn Kneeland at just 24 years old earlier this month.
