Nine scientific breakthroughs I'd like to see in 2026 – from earworms to procrastination | Emma Beddington

A New Year's Wish List for Science Breakthroughs in 2026

As the world gears up for another year of uncertainty, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by global challenges like climate collapse and pandemics. However, there is one constant that brings hope – science.

Last year saw numerous groundbreaking discoveries that left us in awe, from scientists creating a new color called "olo" to researchers developing replica womb lining and lab-grown teeth. These breakthroughs demonstrate the incredible progress being made in various fields of study.

But what about some smaller, yet still fascinating, scientific advancements? Here are nine projects that could make 2026 an exciting year for science enthusiasts:

Reevaluating Seated Activity: For years, we've been told to limit our sitting time due to health concerns. However, a closer examination of the data might just challenge this notion.

New Species Alert: Who wouldn't love discovering a new cute and fluffy mammal? Maybe entomologists could keep an eye out for any adorable, newly discovered insect friends?

Pet Parenting 2.0: Live translation software has come a long way, but its capabilities don't yet extend to understanding our furry friends. A breakthrough in pet-reading technology would be a game-changer.

Earworm Eradication: For many of us, earworms are an annoying phenomenon that refuses to go away. Developing an effective solution to remove these musical afflictions could be music to our ears.

Renewable Energy Innovations: As we strive for more sustainable energy sources, researchers should focus on investigating alternative methods like scrolling and middle-aged female rage (yes, really!).

The Benefits of Slouching: Recent studies have shown that short bursts of exercise can improve overall health. Could it be that slumping over to the fridge has unexpected benefits?

Treadmill Physics: Despite advances in wearable technology, physics still needs to figure out what happens when you run on a treadmill. Perhaps 2026 will see some answers.

Bedtime Procrastination Technology: Who wouldn't want a wearable that could undress them, brush their teeth, and usher them to bed? Or at least one that administers an electric shock every five minutes?

The Case of the Angry Goose: For years, scientists have been studying orcas, but geese are the real mystery. Researchers should focus on understanding what drives these birds' infamous temper.

These projects may seem small, but they could have a significant impact on our daily lives and the world at large. As we move into 2026, let's hope that science continues to surprise us with its ingenuity and innovation.

🤔 I'm really hoping they figure out a way to make earworms disappear. Like, who hasn't been stuck in their head with some annoying song or another? 🎵 It would be amazing if scientists could crack that code. Maybe we'll finally get rid of "Who Let the Dogs Out?" forever 😂

I'm curious about this whole seated activity thing... I mean, who says you gotta be stuck on the couch all day? 😴 I've seen so many people struggle with back pain just because they're not moving enough. Maybe we should be embracing a little more flexibility in our lives? 🤸‍♀️ On the other hand, earworms are literally driving me crazy right now! 🎵 Do you think it's possible to develop some sort of sonic shield or something? That'd be amazing... 🙌

🤔 Scientists need to stop trying to solve everything all at once - focus on one problem first, it'll make them smarter. Those breakthroughs last year were cool but still kinda superficial 🎉

I'm low-key excited about some of these new year's wishes for science breakthroughs 🤔💡. I mean, who wouldn't want a way to eradicate earworms? Those things can be super annoying 😩. Also, pet-reading tech would be amazing - my pup is always trying to tell me something but I just don't speak their language 🐾💬. And treadmill physics? That's like the ultimate mystery - why do we keep walking in circles on those things? 🏃‍♀️🤷‍♀️. Renewable energy innovations are also super important, especially with climate change being such a big deal right now 🌎💚. Can't wait to see what 2026 brings! 😊

🤔 I'm so down for some new tech that helps me not procrastinate too much when it's bedtime. Like a wearable that gently wakes you up or gives you an electric shock every 5 mins ⏰💤 - who wouldn't need that? 🤷‍♀️

I'm excited for 2026, can you imagine having wearable tech that just knows when you're about to skip bed time and gives you a little nudge? 🚀💤 it could be so convenient! also earworm eradication sounds like a great goal, who hasn't struggled with those annoying songs stuck in their head? 🎵😩

🤔 gotta say, some of these ideas are actually kinda genius 🧠, like that pet-reading tech stuff 🐾💬. can you imagine being able to understand what your furry friend is trying to tell you? 🐶😂 it's like a whole new world opens up! and who wouldn't want a bedtime procrastination tech thingy 😴💻. but for real, the seated activity reeval one has me curious 🤔. are we really gonna be stuck in this perpetual "sit less" mentality or is there more to it than meets the eye? 🏋️‍♀️👀

omg can you even imagine if they created a device that could translate what your dog is trying to tell you lol like i was walking my pup last week and it kept staring at the door like something was on the other side and i'm over here like "what's up boy?" 🐶😂 anyway back to these scientific advancements... have you ever noticed how some music just gets stuck in your head and no matter what you do it won't budge? that would be amazing if we could get rid of those earworms for good 🎵🙄

idk if reevaluating seated activity is a good idea lol 🤔... i mean, surely sitting for long periods has gotta be bad for us? but on the other hand, think about how much time we waste getting up and down from our desks... maybe it's not all bad? 😂

oh man i'm so hyped about the new pet-reading tech 🐶💻 it would be amazing to finally understand what our furry friends are trying to tell us!! i mean think about it we can read books decode messages but we still can't even have a basic convo with our dogs 🤷‍♂️ it's like they're speaking their own language or something lol but seriously this tech could revolutionize pet care and strengthen our bond with them ❤️
