Norwest Gallery of Art set to close with final exhibit, ‘Water’ - Detroit Metro Times

The curtains are closing on Detroit's vibrant arts scene as the Norwest Gallery of Art prepares to shut its doors for good. In a poignant final statement, the gallery is celebrating the spirit of water with an exhibit titled "Water," which will be open until December 21.

For Asia Hamilton, the gallery's owner and artist, the decision to close was not taken lightly. Citing financial strain, she admits that the burden of running the space was becoming too much to bear. Despite her best efforts to keep the gallery afloat, Hamilton notes that even with community support, it was just not enough.

As Hamilton navigates this difficult time, she remains committed to her artistic vision and plans to continue creating pop-up installations and hosting artist residencies. The Norwest Gallery's impact on Detroit's arts scene cannot be overstated, having provided a platform for emerging Black artists like herself.

Hamilton's own journey as an artist was marked by rejection and perseverance. "I had been through so much as an artist coming along," she recalls. "Back then, you'd go into galleries with your portfolio, and you either had to have a following or know somebody." It wasn't until the Norwest Gallery opened that Hamilton finally found her footing.

Today, the gallery serves as more than just a physical space – it's a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. As Hamilton herself puts it, "We need to support each other, our art spaces, our institutions... not just the DIA that gets paid by the millage."

For the final time, the Norwest Gallery invites visitors to immerse themselves in its latest exhibit, "Water." A fitting tribute to this life-giving force, which can also be destructive and transformative. As Asia Hamilton so eloquently puts it, "It's all interconnected, just like water."

😔🎨 I'm really gonna miss the Norwest Gallery, you know? It was always a hub for creative energy in Detroit 🌆. The fact that it's closing is super sad, especially since Asia Hamilton has been pouring her heart and soul into it 💖. But at the same time, I gotta respect her decision - she didn't want to keep running on fumes 😩. And the exhibit "Water" sounds like a beautiful way to say goodbye 🌊. It's all about how interconnected everything is, just like water... really deep 💭. As a fan of Asia Hamilton's work, it's gonna be hard to see her go from the gallery side, but I'm also stoked she's still planning on popping up new installations and residencies 💥🎉. She's all about spreading hope and resilience, even in the face of tough times 🌈💪.

I heard the Norwest Gallery is closing down and I'm like "no way, that's like saying my Netflix password is ending" 🤣. For real though, it's sad to see a space that provided so much for emerging artists have to close its doors. Asia Hamilton is still on point tho, planning pop-up installations and all that jazz. I guess you could say the gallery is flowing into new things, even if it is closing down 😊. Anyway, it just goes to show how hard it can be to keep a creative space afloat, but at least her art will live on 💧.

man, i'm really gonna miss detroit's norwest gallery 🤕... they did such incredible work supporting black artists & creating this amazing community of creatives 🌈. asia hamilton is a total inspiration, her journey as an artist is so relatable - she faced rejection & perseverance, just like so many of us 💪. it's sad to see them closing up shop, but i'm also hyped for what asia has planned next 🎨... pop-up installations & artist residencies? that sounds amazing! 🤩 the norwest gallery was more than just a physical space, it was a symbol of hope & resilience - we need more of that in our world ❤️. let's support each other's art spaces & institutions, as asia said 💕

💔😢 I'm kinda sad about the Norwest Gallery closing down... they brought so much vibrancy to Detroit's arts scene 🎨🌊. But you know what? I think Asia Hamilton is totally justified in making this decision 🤯. Running a gallery ain't easy, and it's not like she can just keep throwing money at it 💸. The fact that she was able to provide a platform for emerging Black artists is literally everything 💪. And let's be real, her own story of perseverance is so inspiring 🙌. I'm all about supporting our artistic institutions, even the ones that are struggling 🤝. It's not just about the DIA, it's about the community coming together to celebrate art and creativity 🎉. So yeah, I'll be checking out this "Water" exhibit when it goes on... 💧👍

I'm sad to hear about the Norwest Gallery closing down 🤕🎨. It's like when our school's art club closes for the summer - you miss the creative vibes and the people who make it special 😔. I feel bad that Asia Hamilton had to make this decision, even with community support. Running a space like that must be super tough 🙅‍♀️. But she's still going strong, doing pop-up installations and hosting residencies - that's amazing! 💖 As she said, supporting each other and our art spaces is key 🔑. It's a bummer for Detroit's arts scene, but I'm sure her art will keep inspiring people even after the gallery closes 🎨💫

I don’t usually comment but... 😔 I feel really sad to hear that the Norwest Gallery of Art is closing its doors for good 🤕. It’s been such a huge part of Detroit’s arts scene and Asia Hamilton has done so much amazing work there 💫. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see more of her incredible pop-up installations and artist residencies in action? 🎨 The way she talks about the gallery being a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of adversity really resonates with me 💖. It’s like, we need spaces like that where people can come together and support each other... it feels like so much is missing from our community now 🌫️. I wish they had more resources to keep the gallery going, but at least Asia Hamilton is still committed to creating art and giving back to her community 🙏💕

man i feel bad for asia hamilton and the norwest gallery 🤕 they did an amazing job bringing art and hope to detroit, even with all the financial struggles they never gave up on their dream 💪 asia's story is so inspiring too, from facing rejection as an artist to finding her footing at the gallery - it just goes to show that success rarely happens overnight 🔥 i think we need more people like asia who aren't afraid to speak truth and keep pushing boundaries 🌊 her plan for pop-up installations and residencies is also super cool, can't wait to see what she does next! 👏

man i'm really sad to see the norwest gallery go 🌊😔 i've been to a few of asia hamilton's exhibits and she's an incredibly talented artist. her message about community support for art spaces is so important 🤝💕 we need more people like her who are willing to take risks and push boundaries. the fact that she's still planning to do pop-up installations and host artist residencies is a testament to her dedication to her craft 💪🎨

I'm seeing a lot of parallels between the Norwest Gallery's struggles and our economy 🤔💸. The state funding for arts institutions is still an issue, with some arguing that public money shouldn't be tied to specific galleries or events. It raises questions about how we balance supporting local businesses and ensuring their sustainability. What's your take on it? Should the city prioritize preserving cultural spaces over financial feasibility?

I'm literally heartbroken for the community that will lose out on the Norwest Gallery 🤕... I mean, how many more art spaces are gonna shut down in Detroit? It's not just a gallery, it's a hub for emerging Black artists and creatives who need support and resources to thrive. Asia Hamilton's story is so inspiring though - she went through so much rejection and struggle, but she kept pushing forward and made something amazing happen 🌊... I hope her pop-up installations and residencies can continue to bring art and community together in some way 💪

💔 ugh, another art space closes down 🚪. It's always sad when something that brings a community together goes away. The Norwest Gallery did some amazing work in Detroit and supported so many talented artists 💫. I'm gonna miss seeing Asia Hamilton's pop-up installations 🎨. But hey, at least she's still gonna keep creating and spreading her message of hope and resilience 🌈. It's crazy how much impact one space can have on a city's arts scene 🤯. Guess it just goes to show that even when the curtains close on something, its spirit lives on ✨.

ugh man i'm literally dying over the norwest gallery 🤕💔 it was like my fave place in detroit where i could just chill and appreciate some amazing art 🎨 asia hamilton is a total inspiration to me too, she came from nothing and made this whole thing happen 💪🏽🌟 i remember seeing her work for the first time at one of the gallery's pop-up events and being blown away by her talent 🤯 anyway, it's so sad that they have to close down but i'm glad asia is still gonna keep creating and inspiring people ❤️💫 let's all just take a moment to appreciate the beauty of water 💧🌊
