Odessa A’zion Says She’s Exiting A24 ‘Deep Cuts’ Adaptation After Controversy: ‘I Hadn’t Read the Book’

Odessa A'zion has pulled out of an adaptation of novel 'Deep Cuts', which was already in the works at A24. The actress announced her exit on Instagram after online users voiced their outrage over her casting as Zoe Gutierrez, a character of Mexican heritage and Jewish faith.

In an Instagram post, A'zion stated that she had not read the book and hadn't taken the role seriously enough to do justice to it. "I went in for Percy but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I'm so pissed y'all, I hadn't read the book and should have paid attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…now that I know what I know? F*ck that. I'm out!"

Her decision comes after the news that A'zion would be playing Zoe was announced just a day prior. The character is described in the novel as close friends with music critic Percy, who will be played by Cailee Spaeny, and ex-girlfriend of Joe, played by Drew Starkey.

The role had originally been eyed by actresses Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan before they dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. A24, which is producing the adaptation along with other producers Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, Josh Safdie, Anthony Katagas, Jordan Tappis, and novel author Holly Brickley as an executive producer.

As for who will now play Zoe Gutierrez, it seems that A'zion has given up on her claim to the role. She stated that she couldn't wait to see who else would be suited to take on the part of a character from Mexican heritage with a complex identity.

just saw odessa a'zion bail out of 'deep cuts' over backlash for her casting as zoe gutierrez... yeah, it's about time she stepped down 🙅‍♀️. honestly though, who wouldn't want the role after being in talks with saoirse ronan and austen butler? 🤔 a'zion said she hadn't even read the book lol what was she thinking? 📚 anyway, now that she's out, i'm curious to see if they can find someone who actually knows what they're doing 😅. fingers crossed for a talented actress who can bring some authenticity to zoe's complex identity 💖

I'm not surprised A' Zion bailed on this project 🤷‍♀️, but still kinda shocked she was cast in the first place. I mean, she's got an amazing body, no doubt, but does that even relate to the character at all? And now she just gives up like it's no big deal? It feels so insincere 🙅‍♂️. I'm not saying I'm pro A' Zion or anything, but when someone calls themselves an actress, you've gotta have some skills to back it up...and a little research wouldn't hurt either 😒. This whole thing just stinks of tokenism 🤢

omg i just saw this news and i'm like totally confused? why would someone do that?? so odessa a'zion is out of the adaptation because people were mad at her for playing zoe gutierrez and she didn't even know who was zoe from the book lol what's the point of even casting if you're not gonna take it seriously? 🤷‍♀️ i mean i guess that makes sense if you don't like being called out but still? shouldn't you just be like "hey i apologize for the mistake" or something? 😂

I'm kinda disappointed in Odessa's decision 🤔... I think it's unfortunate that her exit is already making an example out of her, especially after just one day. It felt like she was trying to save face and not take responsibility for not doing enough research on the character.

Now, I do think it's great that Cailee Spaeny got a chance to take on the role 😊... she seems like an awesome actress who can bring depth to Zoe's complex identity. But, at the same time, I'm worried about how this whole drama might affect the final product 🎥... will they be able to get it right after all the drama that went down? Fingers crossed! 💕

I'm so done with this whole situation... like, what's next? 😩 Odessa A'zion was already playing it cool about being offered the role and then suddenly freaks out because people called her out for not doing her research on the character. I get it, we all make mistakes, but to just quit like that? Not cool, girl 🤷‍♀️. And can we talk about how A24 is gonna spin this? They're already announcing who's next in line for the role... are they gonna find someone from Mexican heritage who fits Zoe's complex identity? Or are they just gonna stick with whatever they've got and hope nobody notices? 🤔

Can't say I blame Odessa for standing up for herself 🤷‍♀️, but girl, you gotta read the book first! 📚 Not taking the role seriously enough is just gonna make everyone look bad 💔. And honestly, what's with all the outrage? It's just a casting decision 🙄. A24's got this, they can find someone who actually gets it 🔮. And btw, I think Cailee Spaeny sounds like an amazing Percy 😎!

Ugh I'm so down for Austin Butler or Saoirse Ronan to get the role now, tbh A'zion's exit is kinda like, what's next? 🤔💁‍♀️ The more I think about it, the more I don't think she was right for the part in the first place... and can we talk about how the drama unfolded on social media? 😩👀

draws a simple diagram of a seesaw 🤔
okay so I think Odessa A'zion kinda flipped out 😩 and now the role is up for grabs 🎉 but honestly, it's kinda weird that she's saying she wasn't serious about playing Zoe in the first place... like, didn't you read the book or something? 📚🤷‍♀️
but I guess A'zion was just caught off guard and now it's a new opportunity for someone else 💃🕺 so maybe this will be good for the movie adaptation? 🎬 draw a simple star symbol ⭐

🙄 can you believe this? Odessa's "I'm out" exit is literally the most dramatic thing I've seen all year 😂. Like, girl, you just found out it was your role and you're already ghosting it 🤦‍♀️? And to make matters worse, she's basically saying she wasn't even prepared for the character because she had other stuff on her mind 🙃. Newsflash: if you can't take the time to read the book or learn about the character before committing, maybe don't take the role in the first place? 📚 Just my two cents 💁‍♀️.

🙄 I'm so done with celebrities announcing their exits on Instagram like it's a popularity contest 🤷‍♀️. Odessa A'zion, girl bye... your excuse about not reading the book is weak and it sounds like you just didn't want to do the role anyway 😒. And let's be real, your "I'm so pissed y'all" post was lowkey shade at the fans who called you out on social media 🙄. Can't you just own up to your mistakes and apologize instead of making a big exit? It's like you're trying to save face here 🤷‍♀️. Anyway, I guess now it's down to Cailee Spaeny or whoever else is interested in the role... fingers crossed she'll do better than A'zion 👍

Girl, I'm so disappointed in Odessa 🤕 #SorryNotSorry - A24 is better than this! They need to do some damage control ASAP 💥. Casting calls should come with more info about the role and its cultural significance, especially when it comes to characters of Mexican heritage like Zoe 👀. And what's up with not reading the book? 🤷‍♀️ That's just lazy, fam #BookLover #ActressFail.

just saw odessa's outburst on instagram about zoe gutierrez and gotta say its a bit sus why shes just now talking trash after not even reading the book...i mean i get that mistakes happen but like, come on? casting is all about representation and sensitivity so yeah it makes sense hes outta there

omg u guys cant believe odessa didnt even read the book and didnt take the role serious lol what kinda actress drops out like that?? i feel bad 4 the mexican community but at the same time, i dont think its fair to just b casted in a lead role without even knowin the character's ins & outs...idk who wud be next 4 zoe but hopefully someone wud do better job

OMG 🤦‍♀️, I'm low-key disappointed in Odessa A'zion right now 😔. Like, I get it, we all make mistakes and whatnot... but this was kinda last min 💁‍♀️. Can't believe she just dropped the ball on this role 🎬. And omg, her 'apology' on Instagram was hella extra 🙄. "I'm so pissed y'all"? 😂 Like, girl, calm down and take responsibility for your actions instead of throwing a tantrum. Anywayz, now that she's out, it's like, who else is gonna slay the role of Zoe? Hope whoever gets it can bring some real depth to the character 🤞

🙄 I'm not surprised A'zion pulled out, she seemed kinda detached about the whole thing in that post... like, what's next? Just gonna wing it and hope for the best? 🤔 As for who'll play Zoe now, I think they should've gone with one of those actresses who was originally eyed for the role, Austin Butler or Saoirse Ronan. They seem way more invested in the part than A'zion was... 👀
