Odyssey review – estate agents, cocaine and mental collapse in a jagged London thriller

Gerard Johnson's latest directorial effort, Odyssey, is a jagged and unapologetic thriller that hurtles its protagonist down a rabbit hole of self-destruction. Polly Maberly shines as Natasha Flynn, a small-time estate agent whose life is slowly unraveling under the weight of her own deceit and substance abuse.

As Natasha's grip on reality falters, she becomes increasingly erratic, oscillating between charm and venom towards her hapless colleagues. The script expertly captures her duplicitous nature, where every conversation is laced with insincere warmth and brittle tension. Maberly brings an infectious energy to the role, imbuing Natasha with a sense of comedic desperation that's both captivating and heartbreaking.

However, Johnson's bold decision to pivot into Grand Guignol horror territory midstream raises questions about the film's narrative coherence. The setup promises a satisfying reckoning for Natasha's wrongdoings, but instead, Odyssey careens into a blood-soaked abyss, leaving viewers questioning what's happening and why.

Criticisms aside, Maberly remains a compelling presence throughout, carrying the audience through the most disturbing and illogical of plot twists. Johnson's supporting cast – including Charley Palmer Rothwell as her dweeby colleague Spike – also delivers strong performances that add to the film's overall sense of unease.

The true highlight, however, lies in the sonic landscape created by Matt Johnson, Gerard's brother, whose pulsating and menacing score provides a perfect counterpoint to the on-screen chaos. This aural maelstrom heightens the tension, drawing viewers into Natasha's twisted world and refusing to let go.

While Odyssey doesn't quite coalesce as a satisfying thriller, Maberly's riveting performance ensures that this mess of a film remains watchable, if occasionally infuriating.

ugh i gotta say, odyssey is like, SO intense 🤯 it's like gerard johnson took every bad decision nats makes and ran with it 🚨 but at the same time, polly maberly is just straight up captivating as the toxic nats 🙌 her energy is infectious, even when we're all just sitting there like "what the heck is happening?" 😂 matt johnson's score tho? it's like the soundtrack to my anxiety 💀 anyway, i'm still gonna watch odyssey again because maberly is that good, and also charley palmer rothwell as spike is a hidden gem 🤫

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the ending of Odyssey 🤯... I mean, I get what Gerard Johnson is going for, but it felt like a bit too much of a wild card to me 😅. That score by Matt Johnson though? 🔥 Genius! It's like he took all the unease and tension and turned it into this unstoppable force that just kept me on edge 🎵. Polly Maberly is seriously talented, she brings this level of vulnerability to Natasha that makes you want to root for her despite her worst tendencies 💔. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but if they could've tied up the loose ends a bit more, it would've been even better 👌

I gotta say, Gerard Johnson's latest effort, Odyssey, is like a wild rollercoaster ride - it's got its moments of pure adrenaline-fueled chaos but also some seriously cringe-worthy parts that'll leave you feeling like, "what was he thinking?!" 🤯 The way Polly Maberly nails the performance as Natasha Flynn is just incredible though, she brings this whole mess to life with this perfect balance of charm and menace. But what I do find kinda baffling is how it all unravels midstream - I mean, I get that some bold choices can be exciting but come on! 😂 The horror twist just feels like a total gut-punch and takes you out of the movie. Still, the supporting cast delivers solid performances and Matt Johnson's score is honestly the real MVP - it's like the soundtrack to Natasha's descent into madness 🎵💀

I'm still trying to process the ending of Odyssey 🤯... it feels like Gerard Johnson was playing with fire and took some huge risks in crafting this unconventional narrative. On one hand, I love how Polly Maberly brings this unpredictable energy to Natasha's character – she's both captivating and deeply unnerving at times 😱. The supporting cast is also on point, especially Charley Palmer Rothwell as Spike... he adds this lovable loser vibe that makes you wanna root for him 🤣.

However, I do think the film's tone gets a bit jumbled in the final act. It feels like Johnson was trying to lean into some pretty extreme horror elements, and while it's undeniably unsettling, it takes away from the overall coherence of the story. That being said, Matt Johnson's score is pure perfection – that pulsating sound design is what really sells this film 🎵. Overall, I'd say Odyssey is a wild ride, even if it doesn't quite land as a traditional thriller. Maberly's performance alone makes it worth watching... just be prepared for some serious emotional whiplash! 💥

I just watched this Gerard Johnson flick "Odyssey" and I gotta say, it was like being trapped in a never-ending nightmare with a girl who's slowly losing her grip on reality 🤯. The lead actress Polly Maberly is CRAZY GOOD as the estate agent Natasha Flynn, she's got this charm that's just plain unsettling 🙅‍♀️. But what really threw me off was when it just went from thriller to full-on horror movie in the middle of nowhere... like, I get it, twisty plots can be wild but come on! 😩 Still, Maberly's performance is like a train wreck you can't look away from 🚂 and the score by Matt Johnson is straight fire 🔥. It's not perfect, but I'd still watch this mess again just to see what kind of crazy Natasha gets up to next 👀

Just watched this movie "Odyssey" by Gerard Johnson and I gotta say, Polly Maberly is on fire 🚀! She brings so much depth to her character Natasha Flynn, it's like you can't look away from the train wreck that is her life 😱. The supporting cast isn't bad either, Charley Palmer Rothwell's Spike is pretty funny in an awkward kind of way. But honestly, what really takes this film over the edge is the soundtrack - it's like Matt Johnson knew exactly how to amplify all the crazy moments 🎵. I get why people might say it's a mess, but for me, that mess was kinda mesmerizing?

🤯 I just watched Odyssey and OMG my mind is still reeling from it 😱 Gerard Johnson took some crazy risks with this one, but the ending left me literally questioning what was happening on screen 🤔. The music tho, Matt Johnson's score is INSANE 🔊 it's like the main antagonist of the whole film... seriously though, Polly Maberly's performance was a total highlight 💥 she brought so much depth and complexity to Natasha Flynn, I felt like I was right there with her in that rabbit hole 🤯. Still not sure if it's a mess or a masterpiece, but I'm gonna keep rewatching till I figure it out 😂🎥

I just finished watching this Gerard Johnson film and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it 🤯... I mean, what is going on in this movie? One minute you're laughing at Natasha's antics, the next she's got a knife in her hand 😱. But hey, Polly Maberly is just so captivating as Natasha - she brings this level of chaos to the role that's both mesmerizing and terrifying. The score by Matt Johnson is insane too... I was literally on edge the whole time 😅. Can't say I'd call it a complete success, but I'll be giving Odyssey another watch to see if I missed something 🤔

omg i just saw odyssey last night and i'm still trying to process it lol its like gerard johnson knew exactly what he was doing but kinda went the wrong way idk if i love or hate it 🤯 matt johnson's score is EVERYTHING though its like the film would've been a total snooze fest without it anyway i do think polly maberly deserves some major props for carrying that messy plot throughout - she's literally the only reason i'm still invested in natasha's trainwreck

I mean, I'm all for a good twist, but with Odyssey, it feels like Gerard Johnson just threw every dark trope at the wall and hoped some stuck 🤯 The horror elements feel tacked on, like he took a bunch of weird ideas from an internet forum and ran with them. And don't even get me started on the score – all that pulsating nonsense gives me migraines 😩 I'm not saying it's bad, per se, but for the love of all things good, could we have just stuck to a straightforward thriller? At least then I wouldn't feel like I need a stress ball afterwards 🤯

🤔 I'm all for artistic freedom, but come on, Gerard Johnson needs to be more careful with the narrative thread in his films 📝. One minute you've got a solid character study, and the next, it's like he just threw a bunch of crazy scenes at the wall to see what sticks 🚮. And don't even get me started on the score – I mean, who thought it was a good idea to have pulsating electronic beats while your protagonist is having a downward spiral? 😱 It's like they're trying to distract us from the fact that we're watching a train wreck in slow motion 💥. Still, Polly Maberly's performance is top-notch 👏, and I'll give her credit for bringing some much-needed energy to this mess 🎉.

I gotta say, Gerard Johnson's decision to take the film in a Grand Guignol horror direction is a bit jarring... like, I get it, the setup was promising but it just kinda went off the rails 🤯. I love Polly Maberly though, she brings so much energy to the role and makes Natasha super relatable, even when she's being completely unhinged 😂. The score by Matt Johnson is absolute perfection, it adds this whole other level of tension that makes you feel like something is gonna snap at any second 💀. I'm still not entirely sure what I just watched but in a weird way I kinda wanna watch it again to see if the pieces fit together 🔍...
