Olivia Dean's Man I Need wins Triple J's Hottest 100

Olivia Dean Takes Top Spot: Man I Need Wins Triple J's Hottest 100

British pop sensation Olivia Dean has claimed the coveted number one spot in Australia's largest music poll, Triple J's Hottest 100. Her single, 'Man I Need', which has dominated the Aria singles chart for ten consecutive weeks, secured the top spot with a whopping 2.1 million votes.

Dean edged out Australian artist Keli Holiday, whose catchy earworm 'Dancing2' took second place. The British singer Raye rounded out the top five with her hit 'Where Is My Husband!', while Playlunch's 'Keith' – replete with its own warning for strong language – slotted in at number four. Tame Impala's psychedelic masterpiece 'Dracula' secured a respectable third spot.

A notable trend from this year's countdown is the resurgence of Australian artists, who collectively made up 53 songs on the list, eclipsing their lowest tally since 1996. Fremantle band Spacey Jane raked in five spots for an Aussie artist, with Ocean Alley, Tame Impala, Ninajirachi and Royel Otis also landing four each.

The Australian presence was bolstered by the new feature that allowed voters to search solely for domestic acts, potentially boosting representation. This year's poll highlighted a preference for indie-rock and indie-pop bands, such as Spacey Jane, Royel Otis, Ocean Alley and The Rions. Electronic and dance music were also well-represented, courtesy of international heavyweights like Kettama and local exports Fisher and Dom Dolla.

In stark contrast to the electronic onslaught, Heavy Music and Metal barely featured, with Sleep Token's limited appearance at number 95. TikTok proved a key factor in shaping the list, with artists like Olivia Dean, Raye, Addison Rae, Doechii and Peach PRC drawing significant online support.

The live broadcast of the Hottest 100 was filled with entertaining moments, including listeners' calls and interviews with musicians. Tame Impala's Kevin Parker even donned a Ninajirachi t-shirt while reporting on-air. Lily Allen made a surprise appearance from Mexico to marvel at her recent career resurgence, featuring in tracks like 'Pussy Palace' and 'West End Girl'.

The event also served as a fundraiser for charity partner We Are Mobilise, which supports Australians experiencing homelessness, raising over $500,000.

Olivia Dean's victory marks the third win consecutively for solo female artists, following Chappell Roan in 2024 and Doja Cat in 2023.
