OpenAI is piloting group conversations in ChatGPT

OpenAI's foray into group conversations within ChatGPT marks a significant development in the AI-powered chatbot's capabilities. In a pilot testing phase now underway in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, the platform is enabling users to engage in dynamic discussions with up to 20 individuals, including friends, family, classmates, or colleagues.

The group chat feature integrates seamlessly into existing conversations, allowing users to seamlessly collaborate, brainstorm ideas, and even delegate tasks. For instance, if planning a vacation, ChatGPT can help build an itinerary, suggest renovation projects, or recommend restaurants that cater to everyone's tastes. The AI-powered assistant can also assist with report writing by outlining content based on shared articles and notes.

To initiate a group conversation, users tap the people icon at the top right corner of the screen, prompting ChatGPT to create a new conversation without retaining any existing chat history. Users can then add participants or share a link with one-to-twenty individuals, who must set up profiles with their names, usernames, and profile pictures.

It's worth noting that anyone who receives the group link can invite others, while participants have the flexibility to mute or remove other contributors except for the original creator. Moreover, chatbot-imposed content restrictions apply when users under 18 are present in the conversation.

The responses within these group conversations are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, a model that dynamically selects from various variants based on user prompts. OpenAI claims to have fine-tuned this model to recognize and adapt to the flow of group discussions. Participants can summon ChatGPT by mentioning its name, and the company vows to refine the feature through early user feedback before rolling it out globally.

Ugh, I'm literally freaking out about this new group conversation thingy for ChatGPT!!! 🀯 Like, imagine being able to plan a trip with your squad, or working on a project with your friends and family... it's like having a super smart personal assistant that's always there to help! πŸ’‘ But at the same time, I'm getting some serious concerns about how private our conversations are going to be. Like, what if someone joins a convo without knowing we're talking about them? Or what if they just start spewing hate speech and we can't do anything to stop it? πŸ€” And what's up with the age restriction thing? Are they seriously implying that we're not capable of moderating ourselves?! πŸ˜’ I guess it's cool that there's a way for users under 18 to be protected, but still... this whole group conversation thing is like, a double-edged sword. We need to make sure it's both fun and safe! 🀝 Can't wait to try it out myself when it launches... fingers crossed they get the bugs sorted! πŸ’»

omg, i'm so stoked about this new group convo feature for chatgpt!!! 🀩 thinkin bout planin a vacation with friends and having chatgpt help us build an itinerary is literally a dream come true πŸ˜΄πŸ—ΊοΈ i mean, who needs to spend hours sifting through travel guides and recommendations when you can just have a super smart AI do it for u?! πŸ€“ i'm also low-key excited about the fact that participants can mute or remove others from the convo - like, no more awkward silences or unwanted opinions πŸ˜‚πŸ‘ only downside is the content restrictions for kids... still, gotta praise openai for takin this feature to the next level πŸ’―

Just had to reorganize my screen for all these tabs on my browser lol 🀯. But seriously, the new group chat feature in ChatGPT is super useful for planning trips with friends or collaborating on work projects πŸ—ΊοΈπŸ’Ό. I like how seamless it integrates into existing conversations and doesn't retain any history πŸ“…. However, I'm a bit concerned about the AI's ability to adapt to complex discussions and ensure that everyone gets a voice 😬. Fingers crossed they can refine the feature with user feedback πŸ‘.

I'm loving this new group chat feature on ChatGPT! 🀩 It's gonna be a total game-changer for team projects, family gatherings, or just catching up with friends. I can already imagine having an epic brainstorming session with my squad, bouncing ideas off each other, and getting stuff done way faster. The fact that it integrates so seamlessly into existing conversations is super convenient too! πŸ‘

But I do have one concern - what if there's a huge group chat and someone starts dominating the conversation? πŸ€” Wouldn't be cool if ChatGPT had some sort of " quiet time" feature to keep everyone on track? Also, how will they handle those pesky spam messages or trolls? πŸ™„

Anyway, I'm stoked to try out this new feature when it launches! 😎 Can't wait to see what other awesome things OpenAI has in store for us. πŸ’»

πŸ€” i think this is gonna change the game for chatbots, right? no more solo conversations all day 😴 but we gotta make sure there's a balance between freedom to share and keeping minors safe πŸš«πŸ’»

OMG I'm so hyped about this new group chat feature on ChatGPT!!! πŸ’¬πŸ€© It's like they're making AI conversations super social 🀝! Imagine having a convo with all your friends or colleagues at once, no need to switch between chats or tabs. The features are also super cool - planning a vacation together, working on projects, and writing reports as a team... it's the future of teamwork πŸ’ΌπŸ‘₯! The only thing that worries me is the age restriction πŸ€” but I guess OpenAI wants to make sure all users feel safe online πŸ€—. Can't wait to try this out with my squad πŸ˜„πŸ“±

omg can you even imagine having a convo with up to 20 ppl at once lol? i'm low-key excited for this new group chat feature on ChatGPT πŸ€©πŸ’¬ i mean, think about all the planning we could do together for something like a wedding or moving house... it's like having our own mini AI team πŸ‘₯πŸ“… and yeah, the ability to mute or remove ppl when needed is a nice touch too πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. can't wait to try it out and see what kind of wild conversations come up 🀣
