Portions of I-76 West near 30th Street to have overnight closures for six months

PennDOT Announces Six-Month Closure of I-76 West Near Market Street Bridge

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that six months of overnight closures will begin for a major construction project near the Market Street Bridge. Starting this Sunday, westbound lanes on Schuylkill Expressway between 30th Street and the I-676 interchange will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

During this time, drivers are advised to exit at 30th Street, travel west on Schuylkill Avenue, and access ramps to I-76 West and I-676 East. The closure will only take place during Sundays through Thursdays; holidays will be paused between December 21st and January 3rd.

This $148.9 million project is expected to last for four years, with the goal of partially demolishing and replacing a portion of the Market Street Bridge, repairing the deck and sidewalks that cross the Schuylkill River, and installing a two-way bike lane on Market Street between Schuylkill Avenue West and 23rd Street. Repairs will also be made to the river walls and pedestrian staircase.

In addition to this closure, other road closures are scheduled for various areas of the city. Germantown Avenue will be closed to pedestrians and motorists starting this month, with more extensive construction planned between August 2026 and October 2027 on Market Street.

Meanwhile, Logan Square Park and surrounding areas will have their sidewalks and pedestrian paths closed starting Monday, as part of a larger project to reconstruct eight curb ramps in preparation for the city's 250th anniversary celebrations next year. The closures are expected to last through the spring.

Travelers are advised to exercise caution around construction zones, slow down when driving near these areas, plan for extra time, and check traffic conditions regularly on the 511PA website.

Ugh, six months of closure? That's gonna be a nightmare for commuters 🀯. I mean, we already know it's part of that $148.9 million project to make Market Street more bike-friendly, but still... According to my data, traffic congestion on Schuylkill Expressway can reach up to 90% on peak hours during rush hour; this closure is gonna make it even worse 🚧.

Let me show you some stats... *drops charts*

Average commute time in Philly: 37.4 minutes (2020)
Expected increase in commute time due to I-76 West closure: 10-15 minutes
Average daily traffic volume on Schuylkill Expressway: 230,000 vehicles

You can see how that's gonna affect our morning and evening routines πŸ“Š.

omg guys be careful out there this sunday! PennDOT is closin' down the I-76 West lanes from 30th St to the Market St Bridge from 10 pm to 5 am ... that's a major detour you'll have to take Schuylkill Ave and stuff so plan ahead and check those traffic conditions on 511PA website πŸš§πŸ’¨

Ugh I'm so frustrated with this I76 west closure 🀯 I mean, can't they just do it during the day or something? It's gonna be a nightmare trying to get to school from that direction... and now I have to take that extra route through Schuylkill Avenue which is always a pain. And what about all the construction on Market St too? It's like they're trying to drive us all crazy 😩 I just hope they can finish this project by next year or something so we don't have to deal with it for another 3+ years...

Ugh, I'm so done with road work around here πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ! Six months of closure is a looong time to be stuck in traffic, especially during rush hour. They're doing some major renovations at the Market Street Bridge and it's gonna affect a lot of people's daily commutes. I'm all for progress and safety, but can't they just do it on weekends or something? πŸ˜’ And now with Germantown Avenue getting closed too... it's like the whole city is one big construction zone 🚧😩. Can't wait till next year when we're celebrating our 250th anniversary and there's even more chaos around here πŸŽ‰πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Ugh I'm so tired of all this roadwork in Philly 😩 #PhillyRoads #ConstructionNightmares. Six months is a long time to be stuck in traffic, especially during rush hour πŸš—. I get that they need to fix the Market Street Bridge and add bike lanes, but can't they do it faster? πŸ’¨ The $148.9 million project might seem like a good deal for the city, but what about all the inconvenienced commuters and drivers like me 🀯. And to make matters worse, other road closures are popping up everywhere - Germantown Avenue and Logan Square Park... when will it end? 😩 #RoadWorkProblems #PhillyLife

🚧 This is gonna be a nightmare for commuters! A six-month closure of I-76 West near Market Street Bridge sounds like more than enough to give anyone gray hairs 😬. The $148.9 million project might improve things in the long run, but it's not worth the inconvenience and frustration we'll have to endure πŸ™„. I hope they can finish it on time, otherwise, imagine trying to get through Philly during rush hour with all those road closures... it's already gonna be bad enough without adding more πŸš—πŸ’₯

Ugh I hate road closures πŸš—πŸ˜© - they're like, so frustrating! Six months of overnight closure on I-76 West is a bummer though... how's that gonna affect commuters? Maybe people should just leave early or something πŸ˜’. But hey, it's for the greater good and all that jazz πŸ’―... the bridge needs some TLC and bike lanes are cool πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸŒˆ... but can't we just have more options on the I-76 West instead of a long detour? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Umm... six months of closure for a bridge? That's a long time! 🀯 I mean, I get it they wanna fix the Market Street Bridge, but what about people who take that route to go to work or stuff? Like, do they have an alternate route or something? πŸ˜• And what's with all these other road closures happening around Philly? It's like, one thing at a time, you know? πŸ™ƒ I'm just worried about getting stuck in traffic... I hate driving during rush hour already! ⏰

Ugh, another road closure to deal with πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... I mean, I get it, some major work is needed but six months is a pretty long time to be stuck in traffic πŸš—πŸ˜©. I'm not sure how people are supposed to plan their lives around this closure - I already have too many things to juggle as it is! And the bike lane thing sounds nice and all, but what about those of us who just want to get from point A to point B without having to navigate through construction chaos? πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸš— Can't they just do this project during the week or something? It seems like Sundays are already bad enough with all the sports fans on the roads... 😩

πŸš—πŸ’₯ Ugh, another road closure in Philly... I'm all about supporting the city's infrastructure projects, but this one seems like a real pain for commuters! I mean, six months is a long time to deal with overnight closures and detours... 🀯 I just hope they're worth it when we get that new bike lane on Market Street! 😊 And can't wait to see what the final result of this project looks like... hopefully, it'll make traveling around the city even smoother for everyone 🌈.

ugh I'm so sick of these road closures already! like what's next? they're gonna close off whole streets and ruin our weekend vibes πŸ™„. four years?! that's ages to deal with one construction project. cant we just use some magic to fix it all in one day or something lol. i swear, pennsylvania is turning into one big traffic nightmare πŸ’€.

Ugh, I hate driving in Philly during construction season πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ! But I guess it's necessary to upgrade the Market Street Bridge and make our city more bike-friendly πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ. The two-way bike lane will be a big plus for cyclists, but I hope they can do it without causing too much chaos on Schuylkill Expressway. And 6 months of closure is a long time, especially with holidays in between 🀯. Maybe we should plan our road trips around these construction zones or look into alternative routes? The city's got some great public transportation, so let's make the most of it πŸšŒπŸ’¨

Ugh, major pain in the neck... six months of closure? That's like, forever 😩! Can't they just do it during weekdays or something? And what about all the extra travel time? I'm planning a trip to Philly soon and now I gotta factor in an extra hour of driving πŸš—. But I guess it's for the greater good... partially demolishing the Market Street Bridge, etc... sounds like some fancy-schmancy infrastructure project πŸ€”. Just hope they don't mess up the traffic too much around Logan Square Park, that's like, my go-to spot when I'm in the city πŸŒ³πŸ’š

ugh i hate sunday nights πŸ™„, i'm already dreading this six month closure on i-76 west. $148.9 million is a lot of cash, hope it's worth the inconvenience πŸ€‘. can't believe they're closing market street bridge for four years, that's just ridiculous 🀯. what's with all these road closures in philly? it feels like every other thing is being shut down right now 😩. and i know logan square park isn't exactly a busy spot, but come on, extra closure? might as well stay home and play video games all day 😴. gotta remember to check traffic conditions regularly, don't wanna get stuck in some construction jam πŸš—πŸ˜¬

ugh i was trying to get out of the city yesterday but the detour on schuylkill expressway was a nightmare πŸ™„ i swear i've been stuck in traffic more times this year than i can count... anyways, $148.9 million is a lot of cash for a bike lane and some repairs πŸ€‘ hope the end result is worth it though, i'm all about those two-way bike lanes πŸ‘

omg this is gonna be a mess 🀯 I'm not loving the idea of having to detour all over the city every sunday 😩 i mean i get it we need the market street bridge work but can't they do it at night when everyone's home πŸŒƒ also what's up with the bike lane on market st? is that gonna be super popular or just a bunch of tourists using it as a shortcut πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

ugh dont even get me started on this i-76 west closure πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ like whats next? we gotta close the whole highway just to fix a bridge and add some bike lanes πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ sounds like theyre trying to make philly more bike friendly or something... anyway guess thats six months of traffic jams for us 😴 anyone else have a sweet idea for how to spend that extra time stuck in traffic? maybe take up knitting or something πŸ˜‚
