PennDOT Announces Six-Month Closure of I-76 West Near Market Street Bridge
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that six months of overnight closures will begin for a major construction project near the Market Street Bridge. Starting this Sunday, westbound lanes on Schuylkill Expressway between 30th Street and the I-676 interchange will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
During this time, drivers are advised to exit at 30th Street, travel west on Schuylkill Avenue, and access ramps to I-76 West and I-676 East. The closure will only take place during Sundays through Thursdays; holidays will be paused between December 21st and January 3rd.
This $148.9 million project is expected to last for four years, with the goal of partially demolishing and replacing a portion of the Market Street Bridge, repairing the deck and sidewalks that cross the Schuylkill River, and installing a two-way bike lane on Market Street between Schuylkill Avenue West and 23rd Street. Repairs will also be made to the river walls and pedestrian staircase.
In addition to this closure, other road closures are scheduled for various areas of the city. Germantown Avenue will be closed to pedestrians and motorists starting this month, with more extensive construction planned between August 2026 and October 2027 on Market Street.
Meanwhile, Logan Square Park and surrounding areas will have their sidewalks and pedestrian paths closed starting Monday, as part of a larger project to reconstruct eight curb ramps in preparation for the city's 250th anniversary celebrations next year. The closures are expected to last through the spring.
Travelers are advised to exercise caution around construction zones, slow down when driving near these areas, plan for extra time, and check traffic conditions regularly on the 511PA website.

. I mean, we already know it's part of that $148.9 million project to make Market Street more bike-friendly, but still... According to my data, traffic congestion on Schuylkill Expressway can reach up to 90% on peak hours during rush hour; this closure is gonna make it even worse

I just hope they can finish this project by next year or something so we don't have to deal with it for another 3+ years...
! Six months of closure is a looong time to be stuck in traffic, especially during rush hour. They're doing some major renovations at the Market Street Bridge and it's gonna affect a lot of people's daily commutes. I'm all for progress and safety, but can't they just do it on weekends or something? 
And now with Germantown Avenue getting closed too... it's like the whole city is one big construction zone 
. I get that they need to fix the Market Street Bridge and add bike lanes, but can't they do it faster? 
. The $148.9 million project might improve things in the long run, but it's not worth the inconvenience and frustration we'll have to endure 
. I hope they can finish it on time, otherwise, imagine trying to get through Philly during rush hour with all those road closures... it's already gonna be bad enough without adding more 
... the bridge needs some TLC and bike lanes are cool 
... but can't we just have more options on the I-76 West instead of a long detour? 
And what's with all these other road closures happening around Philly? It's like, one thing at a time, you know? 
I'm just worried about getting stuck in traffic... I hate driving during rush hour already! 
... I mean, I get it, some major work is needed but six months is a pretty long time to be stuck in traffic 
And can't wait to see what the final result of this project looks like... hopefully, it'll make traveling around the city even smoother for everyone
