Premier League's warped economics make £65m fee for Semenyo a snip | Jonathan Wilson

£65 Million: A Price Without Parity in Modern Football

The Premier League has become accustomed to astronomical transfer fees, but Antoine Semenyo's £65 million deal from Bournemouth to Manchester City stands out for its peculiar price tag. The Ghanaian forward, 25 and with four-and-a-half years left on his contract, is an exceptional talent with a rare combination of speed, skill, intelligence, and work rate.

Semenyo's fee, however, feels oddly quiet given the hype surrounding other big signings this summer. His transfer is about to join the elite group of £65 million-plus deals in European football history, leaving many to wonder if it's worth the astronomical sum. The market dictates value, and City has undoubtedly taken a chance on Semenyo.

The notion that certain players become fashionable and drive up prices may also be at play here. The market demand is undeniable, but what makes Semenyo so valuable? His transfer eclipses notable deals like Nordi Mukiele's £10 million switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Sunderland, highlighting the ever-changing landscape of football economics.

Benjamin Sesko, a striker signed by Liverpool for £40 million, will become the new No 9 above Semenyo on the list. This season has seen an influx of big-name strikers, often referred to as 'classics' due to their traditional playing style. Strikers like Hugo Ekitiké and Viktor Gyökeres have struggled with adaptation in recent months.

However, Erling Haaland's success serves as a counterpoint. The Norwegian sensation has found another level since joining Manchester City, scoring 19 goals from 19 league games. His remarkable form doesn't necessarily mean old-school strikers are back in vogue; however, his story does prove that there can be room for classic number nines.

Semenyo's arrival at City will undoubtedly spark debate about the value of the transfer. Guardiola is known for his tactical acumen and adaptability, but even he cannot guarantee success with a player so expensive. Ultimately, the £65 million tag feels detached from any objective reality in football economics. What will it take to prove Semenyo's worth at City?

im not sure about semenyo's price tag lol £65m is crazy even for a superstar like him 🤯 i mean benjamin sesko just got £40m and he's not as good as semenyo, so what makes his fee so different? maybe its the hype around city signing him or the market demand but its hard to justify that kind of money for one player 💸 semenyo needs to do some magic on the pitch this season or else that price will look like a total rip off 🤷‍♂️

I dont know about this Semenyo guy lol 🤔 his price tag is straight fire 💥 but also kinda weird considering all the other big signings happening this summer... I mean, 65 mil is a lot of cash 💸 and its gonna be interesting to see how he fits in at City... they got some great players already like Haaland who's doing pretty well 🤩 so it'll be cool to watch him play alongside Semenyo 👊 but man, that price tag better come with some sick goals or something 😅

💸 I feel like £65 mil is way too much for this guy...like, what makes him so special that he deserves a price tag that's almost as big as some of these 'classics' who aren't even as good as semenyo lol 🤔 He's fast and skilled, but there are other forwards out there who can do the same thing without costing an arm and a leg...i mean, benjamin sesko just got £40 mil for like 10 goals less than what semenyo's gonna get? 😂 it's all about market demand, i guess...but at this point, it feels like city is just buying fame more than talent 🤷‍♂️

I think £65 million is just crazy 🤯. I mean, I get that the guy's a talented forward and all that, but 65 million quid seems like overkill. I've seen cheaper players who've had more impact in the transfer market before. And let's be real, there are way better strikers out there who don't cost an arm and a leg 💸. It's just not right when you think about it... Like, what's the actual value of Semenyo? Is he gonna make City win trophies or is he just another expensive signing with no tangible return 🤔?

I'm not sure if 65 million is fair for Semenyo 🤔... I mean, don't get me wrong, he seems like a beast on the pitch 💪, but there are other strikers out there who've had similar success without breaking the bank 💸. Like, have you seen Benjamin Sesko's deal? £40 million is a lot to ask for a striker, and I'm not convinced it's worth it 🤷‍♀️. And let's be real, players like Hugo Ekitiké and Viktor Gyökeres are just trying to adapt to the game, it's not their fault they're not scoring goals 🏆... Meanwhile, guys like Erling Haaland are crushing it without being all flash and bang 💥. It feels like City is trying to be trendy with Semenyo's transfer, but what really matters is results on the pitch ⚽️. Can't wait to see how this plays out! 👀

I'm not sure about this new signings frenzy 🤑... One minute you're breaking the bank for some speed demon striker and the next, nobody's talking about the guy who just scored 19 goals in 19 games 🏆. It's like we forgot what made those classic strikers so special in the first place - pure goal-scoring ability 💪. I mean, £65 million is a lot of cash, but if Semenyo can't deliver on that price tag, it'll be one expensive lesson for City 😬.

£65 million is still way too much for this guy...I mean, I guess if you're City and you wanna splurge on a forward who might just magically become another Haaland 🤔. But honestly, there are better forwards out there that cost half the price and they're not getting as much hype 🤑. And what's with all these classic strikers? They were always gonna struggle in today's game, but they still manage to get £40 million deals...it just don't add up 💸.

so like i was watching this match between man city and bournemouth the other day and i saw semenyo play and he was amazing 😍 I've got a question though, how does £65 million even work? is that like a billion bucks or what 🤑

The Premier League is getting wilder 🤯! I mean, £65 million for Antoine Semenyo? That's straight-up crazy 💸. Don't get me wrong, the guy sounds like a beast on the pitch ⚽️, but come on... can we say if it's really worth that kind of cash? For me, at least, it feels like a lot of hype and not enough substance 🤔. I'm all for City taking risks, but even Pep Guardiola can't guarantee success with a player so pricey 💸. What's gonna make this transfer worthwhile? Is it just about Semenyo proving himself or is there something more to it?

🤔 I mean, £65m is still crazy, right? 🤑 But you're right, there's some weirdness around this transfer. It feels like the market just kinda... decided that Antoine Semenyo was worth a gazillion bucks 💸. Like, what else can he do that hasn't been done by other players before him? 💪

I love how Erling Haaland is proving that classic strikers can still be successful in the modern game 🙌. Maybe this £65m tag will turn out to be an overcorrection or something 😅. I'm curious to see how Guardiola adapts Semenyo into his system, too 🤔.

But what's wild is that there are all these 'classics' getting splurged on big deals again ⚽️. Does it really mean old-school strikers are back in vogue? 🤷‍♂️ I think it's more about finding those special talents like Semenyo who can adapt to the modern game 💫.

omg u dont get it 🤯 how can they charge 65 mil for semenyo he's def not a top tier player lol benjamin sesko is still better than him btw liverpool got robbed with that transfer price 😂 and yeah erling haaland tho his skills r out of this world 💥 but like what even is the logic behind semenyos price tag? £65 mil is just crazy 4ever 💸

come on, £65 million is still a bit sus, you know? i mean benjamin sesko just got £40 million and he's not exactly some world beater...Semeno just needs to show up and score goals for 6 months or so before people start saying "yeah okay we get it"

I think this transfer fee is way too much 😂. I mean, I get that Semenyo is an amazing player and all, but £65 million is just crazy talk! It's like he's a sure-fire world winner or something 🤣. And you're right, the market can play tricks on us, but come on, it feels like City is just trying to keep up with everyone else's big signings this summer.

And what about the other strikers who got way less money? Like Benjamin Sesko who's basically a new Semenyo, but only cost £40 million 🤑. It's all about the hype and the market demand, I guess. But I'm still not convinced that Semenyo is worth every single penny 💸. We'll just have to wait and see if Guardiola can make him shine at City 😊.

I'm like "yeah, 65 million is insane" 🤯, I mean who needs that kinda cash for a striker, right? 🤑 But then again, Semenyo is supposedly this game-changer talent with incredible skills... 🤔 but what if he's just hyped by the market and City is taking a risk on him? 💸 Maybe £65 million is actually not too much considering his potential? 🤷‍♂️ I dunno... could be, or it could be completely bonkers 😅. Either way, it'll be super interesting to see how Semenyo performs at City and whether his price tag is justified... we'll just have to wait and see! 🕰️
