Rangers: James Tavernier defiant but are players good enough to take team forward?

Rangers' Europa League hopes hang in the balance, but captain James Tavernier insists his side can still achieve knockout stage qualification despite taking just one point from their opening five fixtures. The 1-1 draw with Sporting Braga, after Rodrigo Zalazar's headbutt of Nicolas Raskin led to a costly goal for the Rangers, ended a seven-game European losing streak but raised concerns over the team's ability to compete at this level.

"We have to be more patient, probing around their final third instead of trying to shoot maybe when it's not on," Tavernier said after the match. "If we keep clean sheets, we win. That's our aim as a team, to keep clean sheets."

But the Rangers' performance in Europe has been underwhelming so far this season, and questions are being asked about whether they have the quality and depth to compete against top-tier opponents.

"Rangers rue Djiga error after draw with 10-man Braga"

The team's captain, James Tavernier, was critical of Nasser Djiga's defensive error that led to Braga's goal. "I've got no complaint with Nasser, everyone makes a mistake," he said. "We ultimately should have had that game tied up before that even happens."

Rangers' manager Danny Rohl also acknowledged the team's struggles but expressed optimism about their prospects for the remainder of the competition. "There is no question that it goes in the right direction," he said. "In European competition you cannot make many mistakes and this is something we have to work on."

The team's performance has been criticized by pundits, with some questioning whether Rangers have the talent and ability to compete at this level.

"My concern, and it's a big concern, is I'm not sure the team is capable of a lot better than that," said former Rangers striker Ally McCoist. "I really hope I'm wrong."

Rangers are set to face Ferencvaros and Porto in their next two Europa League fixtures, with progression to the knockout stage still a long shot.

As one fan succinctly put it, "That Rangers team is terrible. One of the worst to ever don't the famous blue jersey. Not one of them deserves to be playing for the club."

The team's recent form and performance in Europe have raised concerns about their ability to compete against top-tier opponents, but Tavernier remains defiant, insisting that his side can still achieve knockout stage qualification.

"Being a Rangers player, you have to win every single game," he said. "That's what we have to do from now to the end of this competition."

But with the team's European hopes hanging in the balance and their performance against Braga a worrying sign, it remains to be seen whether Rangers can turn things around and make a deep run in the competition.

I don't get why people are being so harsh on the lads πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. One point from five isn't too bad, innit? They're still in with a shout for that knockout stage spot. James Tavernier's right to say they need to be more patient and probing around Braga's box instead of trying to shoot all the time. And Nasser Djiga's error wasn't the end of the world πŸ™ƒ. Rangers are a team that's been through tough times before, like when they were relegated to the Championship. They'll bounce back from this, no doubt about it πŸ’ͺ. Danny Rohl knows what he's doing, and Ally McCoist just needs to give them more time. I mean, one game where they didn't win is not enough to write them off entirely πŸ˜’. Let's see how they do against Ferencvaros and Porto, and we'll know if they're capable of competing at that level πŸ€”.

Rangers need to step up their game ASAP 🚨πŸ’ͺ! They're struggling big time in Europe and it's not looking good for them right now πŸ˜”. I think they've got some quality players, but they just aren't clicking as a team yet πŸ€”. James Tavernier's comments about being more patient and probing around the final third are spot on πŸ‘, but they need to put that into practice NOW πŸ’₯! The fans are getting frustrated too, it's like "when will we see some real quality from this team?" πŸ˜©πŸ‘Ž. Let's hope they can turn things around against Ferencvaros and Porto, fingers crossed 🀞! #RangersFC #EuropaLeague #ComeOnYouGers πŸ’›

You know, i was thinking about this one weird dream i had last week... 😴 I'm just walking through a park, but its not like any park i've ever been to before. The trees are all this crazy twisted shape, like someone's playin with their pencil or somethin'. And the grass is all these different colors, like a big ol' patchwork quilt. I swear, it was so vivid... made me wonder if my brain was tryin to tell me somethin'. πŸ€”

I'm so over these forums πŸ˜’. Can't even have a decent discussion without people dissing on the team's performance. I mean, come on, we're just trying to provide some analysis here πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Tavernier's comments made sense to me, and I don't think it's fair to say that Rangers are "terrible" πŸ’”. They've got some talented players, but yeah, they need to step up their game ⚽️. The fact that we can't even have a debate without people throwing in insults is just frustrating πŸ™„. Can't we just focus on the facts and try to help each other out? πŸ€—

πŸ€” It's like, I mean, come on, guys... πŸ˜‚ Rangers have got some serious talent on paper, but when you're not getting the results, it's tough to see how that's gonna cut it against top-tier teams. They've been saying all these things about being patient and probing around the final third, but at the end of the day, you can't just keep making mistakes like Nasser Djiga did there... πŸ™„ It's not rocket science, guys. If you're gonna score, you gotta be in the right place at the right time. And if you're not, then you've got to be able to defend, which is apparently a problem for this team. 😬

I mean, I get it, no one likes losing, and you've got to have confidence that your players can step up when it matters most... but the truth is, Rangers need to show some serious improvement if they wanna compete against the big boys. And until then, all these 'we're gonna turn it around' stories are just gonna come across as, well, a bit dodgy, you know? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's not impossible that they can do it, but I think most people would say their chances are slim at best.

The thing is, though... 😊 Rangers have been in tough situations before, and they've always managed to scrape through. So maybe, just maybe, this time around will be different. But until we see some real signs of improvement, let's not get too carried away with the optimism, shall we? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

I'm getting so frustrated watching our kids struggle on the pitch 🀯. It's like they're not even trying or something πŸ˜’. I mean, come on James Tavernier, you're the captain of the team and you can't even criticize your own player properly? πŸ˜’. Nasser Djiga's mistake was clear as day and it's amazing how some players just can't get their head around the game πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

And don't even get me started on Ally McCoist, former Rangers striker or whatever... he's just so negative all the time πŸ™„. "I'm not sure the team is capable of a lot better than that"... what a downer πŸ˜”. Can't we just be positive for once? 😊

I think what's really worrying me is how our kids are being taught to play football πŸ€”. It's all about individual skill and not teamwork anymore πŸ†. That's why they're struggling against top-tier opponents, because they don't know how to work together as a team πŸ’¬.

And the fans... oh my goodness, some of you guys are just so harsh 😩. "That Rangers team is terrible"... wow, really? πŸ™„. Can't we just support our team and cheer them on instead of tearing each other apart? πŸ€—.

πŸ€” I'm not sure what's more worrying, the team's lack of quality or depth or their inability to handle pressure. One draw from five games isn't exactly a disaster, but it's also not enough to fill me with confidence about their chances in the Europa League.

Their defense is a major concern, especially after that goal from Djiga that opened up a 2-1 lead for Braga. You can't just expect to win every game, especially against top-tier opponents. The team needs to work on keeping clean sheets and being more patient in front of goal.

It's also worth noting that this isn't a new problem for Rangers in Europe. They've been struggling to adapt to the competition for years now, and it's starting to wear thin on fans like Ally McCoist who are calling out the team for their lack of quality.

I'm not sure what the future holds for Rangers in the Europa League, but I do think they need to make some serious changes if they want to compete with the best. They can't just rely on luck and hope to turn things around at this stage.

they're just making excuses πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ, "we have to be more patient" etc... like that's gonna cut it against top-tier teams πŸ™„... their performance has been underwhelming for weeks now and people are starting to question if they've got what it takes πŸ€”... i don't buy the optimism from rangers' manager, we'll see how things go in the next two games πŸ’―... and what's with all these pundits questioning the team's quality? should be no surprise considering how poorly they're playing πŸ˜’

πŸ€” I'm literally on edge watching them play... 😬 James Tavernier is right tho, they gotta keep clean sheets if they wanna win. It's just so frustrating to see them give away goals like that πŸ™„ Djiga's mistake was a bummer πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ The pundits are saying they're not good enough and I'm like yeah maybe 😳 but then again Tavernier is still super optimistic πŸ’ͺ about their chances... Ferencvaros and Porto next up, wish 'em luck πŸ‘€

πŸ€” seems like rangers is having some major identity crisis rn, one minute they're trying to be the big boys, next minute they're getting destroyed by braga πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ tavenier's words are solid, but can they actually back it up? πŸ”₯

I'm so frustrated watching them struggle in Europe πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. As a parent, I know how hard my kid tries when they're learning something new, but this team just seems like it's not clicking πŸ“š. James Tavernier saying they need to be more patient and probing around the final third instead of shooting wild is spot on πŸ‘. But it's not just about the individual players, it's about the team as a whole 🀝. They need to work together and communicate better πŸ’¬. And yeah, Nasser Djiga's mistake was costly 😳. I hope they can turn things around and make a deep run in the competition 🀞. But right now, it's just hard to watch πŸ˜”.

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, come on... a seven-game losing streak? That's just... πŸ˜’ Rangers' form is, well, let's just say they're not exactly lighting up the Europa League πŸ“¦. One point from five games? Not exactly the most reassuring sign of things to come. πŸ€” But hey, James Tavernier's all optimism and positivity - I love it πŸ’ͺ! "We have to be more patient"? Yeah, sure, because that's exactly what Rangers need: more patience 😴. The problem is, their performances just aren't good enough πŸ”₯. It's not just about making mistakes (although Nasser Djiga's error was a bit of a brain-fart 🀯). They just need to step it up and start competing like they should be πŸ†. And Ally McCoist? I feel you, mate πŸ‘Š. The team's got some work to do if they wanna make a deep run in the competition πŸ’₯.

I'm not sure I buy into these guys' optimism πŸ€”... they're still taking only one point from five games in Europe, that's just not good enough πŸ’”. And let's be real, Djiga's defensive error was a major issue there, it's hard to make excuses for that kind of mistake 😳. But still, the team seems like they're relying on their captain's words of wisdom, "keep clean sheets" and all that πŸ™„... sounds easy enough, but has anyone actually seen them do that in a European match? πŸ’ I'm not convinced they've got what it takes to compete with top-tier teams. And those pundits are right, Ally McCoist seems spot on when he says the team isn't capable of much better than that 😬. Still, you never know in football, maybe they'll surprise us and make a deep run... but I'm not holding my breath πŸŽ‰

πŸ€” so i'm watching this rangers game and their captain james tavernier is all like we just need to keep clean sheets and win... like what's going on here? πŸ˜‚ have u seen the state of their defense? it's like they're trying to give the opposition a free pass. 🚫 but at the same time, i can feel the desperation in tavernier's voice when he says we just need to win every single game... that's like, not even a strategy anymore πŸ˜…

anywayz, rangers are probs gonna struggle against ferencvaros and porto next, and it's hard 2 imagine them makin' a deep run in the competition πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i mean, they're just takin every single game? πŸ˜‚ like, thats not even how footy works fam πŸ’ͺ

idk how much more of these rangers games i can watch πŸ˜’ they just dont seem 2 b able 2 string 2gthr, even with their big name players, they cant defend πŸ™„ nassers error cost them that draw, and james tavenier's reactions after it were on point πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ but seriously though, if rangers wanna make a deep run in the europa league, they need 2 b more clinical in front of goal & work on their defensive cohesion 🀯 no more sloppy errors like nassers mistake πŸ‘Ž
