Red Sox trade for Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo in 5-player deal

Boston Red Sox Acquire Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher Johan Oviedo in Five-Player Deal

The Boston Red Sox have made their third trade of the offseason, acquiring Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo as part of a five-player swap. The deal comes just a week after the team acquired starting pitcher Sonny Gray from the Cardinals.

Oviedo, 27, is a tall and imposing presence on the mound at 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds, but his career has been marred by injuries. He missed all of the 2024 season following Tommy John surgery and only made nine starts in 2025 after being sidelined due to a lat injury.

Despite his injury issues, Oviedo showed flashes of talent last season, sporting a 3.57 ERA over 40 innings of work and striking out 42 batters. However, he also struggled with command, leading the league in hit batters in 2023 (13) and walking 23 batters over those same 40.1 innings.

The Red Sox are acquiring Oviedo along with minor leaguers Tyler Samaniego and Adonys Guzman from Pittsburgh as part of the deal. Boston is trading outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia and Single-A pitcher Jesus Travieso to the Pirates in exchange for Oviedo, a move that could provide the team with some much-needed depth in their rotation.

Oviedo may not be the answer in Boston's pursuit of a proven No. 2 stalwart to place behind Garrett Crochet atop the Red Sox rotation, but he could have untapped potential as a No. 4 or No. 5 option if the team can utilize his talent and keep him healthy. With Oviedo on board, the Red Sox are adding another arm to their pitching mix and will be hoping that they can get the most out of him.

The deal also brings an end to Garcia's brief stint with the Red Sox, who appeared in five games with Boston in 2025 before being sent back to Pittsburgh. Garcia had raised his stock as one of Boston's top prospects this past summer, hitting .261 with 21 home runs and 75 RBI across 114 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester last season.

With Oviedo now on board, the Red Sox are adding a new layer of depth to their rotation and will be hoping that he can provide some stability and consistency moving forward. The team's pitching coach, Andrew Bailey, will have his work cut out for him in trying to get the most out of Oviedo, but with the right approach, there is potential for this young pitcher to make an impact in Boston.

omg i'm low-key hyped about this trade i mean oviedo's gotta be a risk but at least he's got some decent skills on paper ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ€ and samaniego & guzman are solid minor leaguers so i guess it's not a total bust yet anyway we'll see how the red sox handle him this season... they might actually make something of him ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm literally so done with these MLB teams and their transfer seasons its like they're playing some kinda game of musical chairs out there. First it's Sonny Gray and now Johan Oviedo? What's next? Theyre just throwing people together hoping something sticks and I don't blame them, but the hype is real for a sec before they get hurt or struggle to adapt.

I mean think about it, this kid Oviedo was barely on the scene last season what with his Tommy John surgery and all that. And now he's being thrown into this behemoth of a team like Boston? I love the excitement, but there's also this giant elephant in the room - Injuries. What if they can't get him to stay healthy?! What if they're setting themselves up for another crushing season?

But at the same time...I gotta admire the Red Sox willingness to take a chance on someone with untapped potential. It's like, they saw something in this kid that no one else did and they're willing to roll the dice on him. And who knows maybe Garrett Crochet isn't the answer and Oviedo steps up to be the solid #2 starter we all thought he'd be.

so they just traded some prospect players for a guy who's been hurt a lot... i guess it's cool that they're trying to add depth to their rotation tho ๐Ÿค”. oviedo seems like he's got some talent, but he needs to stay healthy. hopefully the red sox can help him out and make him a better pitcher. it's always hard when you're dealing with injuries, but at least he showed some flashes of brilliance last season ๐ŸŸ๏ธ

Wow! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I mean, I'm not sure about this move by the Red Sox. They're taking a guy who's been hurt so much in his career and hoping he can be a solid 4th or 5th starter. Interesting that they're trading away some of their top prospects too, like Garcia, who was doing well last season ๐Ÿค”

so they're trading a guy who had some good numbers last season but was injured like crazy ๐Ÿค• and now they're getting another guy who's super tall but has injury issues too? like what are the chances of him staying healthy? ๐Ÿ’ช and i dont get why they gave up that prospect garcia, he sounded like he could be a game changer โšพ๏ธ

ugh i dont even no where to start about dis deal lol ๐Ÿคฏ i mean oviedo got skills but like injuries r a big red flag 4 me and its not just 1 season he missed everythin or only made 9 starts last year he showed some flashes of brilliance but also struggled so much with command it's scary thinkin bout him bein on the mound for the red sox ๐Ÿค”

and what about garcia? i mean i know hes a prospect and all but like why did they just send him away? didnt see anythin in the deal that made me think hes worth givin up when hes got so much potential here in boston ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I'm not sure about this trade yet... they're getting a big guy in Johan Oviedo, but he's got some injury issues ๐Ÿค• and struggles with command on the mound. The Red Sox need someone who can step up as their No. 2 starter behind Crochet, but maybe Oviedo can be that guy at No. 4 or 5? He had some good stuff last season, but you gotta wonder if he'll stay healthy. And I'm sad to see Jhostynxon Garcia go... he was looking like a promising prospect ๐Ÿค”

"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone." ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ’ช I think Red Sox just made a bold move by acquiring Oviedo, who's got immense upside despite injury concerns. If they can find ways to harness his talent and keep him healthy, he could become a solid No. 4 or No. 5 starter for the team. It's all about finding that right balance between risk and reward now! ๐Ÿ˜Š

omg i think the red sox are really taking a chance on oviedo ๐Ÿค”... like yeah he's got talent but injuries are a major concern for me. they need that no 2 starter ASAP and i'm not sure if oviedo can fill that role right now ๐Ÿšซ... still, gotta love the depth they're building in that rotation! ๐Ÿ‘ also sad to see garcia go, he was really showing some promise last season ๐Ÿ˜”... what do you guys think about this trade? ๐Ÿ’ฌ

this trade has got me thinking about the fragility of talent & how easily it can be derailed by injury ๐Ÿค• oviedo's story reminds me that even when we're at our peak, we're not immune to setbacks & that sometimes it takes a village (or in this case, a team) to help us get back on track ๐Ÿ’ช what's most interesting is the Red Sox's willingness to take a chance on him despite his injury history โ€“ it says a lot about their commitment to developing young players & finding value in unconventional sources ๐Ÿ“ˆ

I'm kinda stoked that Boston got Johan Oviedo, but I gotta think... he's been plagued by injuries and his stuff is pretty wild ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds is a big dude, but the hits batter count from last season is straight up ugly ๐Ÿ˜ณ. Still, you never know how things are gonna play out with a guy like Oviedo. They might be able to get him to harness that talent and turn it into something special. And hey, having some depth in the rotation can't hurt, especially if they're trying to make a push for a playoff spot ๐ŸŒŸ. I'm just hoping Andrew Bailey's coaching magic can help Oviedo find his footing... we'll see how this one plays out ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐ŸŒŸ just read that Boston Red Sox got Johan Oviedo from Pittsburgh Pirates! ๐Ÿค” i think its a good move for them they need more depth in their rotation and oviedo has shown some nice stuff on the mound despite all his injuries ๐Ÿฅ 27 is still pretty young so i think he can make a comeback if the team gives him a chance ๐Ÿ‘ and yeah, jhostynxon garcia's potential is huge but sometimes u gotta take calculated risks ๐Ÿ’ก oviedo might not be the answer right now but he could be in the future ๐ŸŒŸ

I'm not really sure why the Red Sox are making these trades. Can't they just spend some cash on a good free agent? Oviedo's got some talent, I guess, but he's all over the place. Like, what's with this guy? He was out for the whole '24 season and then only threw 40 innings last year? You'd think that would be a major red flag... ๐Ÿค”

And now they're throwing away another prospect like Garcia just to get him? That's some weird trade-making if you ask me. I mean, I love prospects as much as the next fan, but can't we wait until someone's actually ready before we make a move? This feels like a lot of risk for not that much reward... ๐Ÿ˜•

omg i'm so hyped about dis new trade!!! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ i mean oviedo may not be da answer 2 boston's no1 need, but as a backup or no3 starter he could bring some serious depth 2 da team ๐Ÿ”„๐Ÿ’ช and let's be real, oviedo's got game ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ his stats aren't bad at all ๐Ÿ“Š 3.57 era ain't too shabby ๐Ÿ˜Ž and if boston can keep him healthy he could be a total ace โญ๏ธ in da making ๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿค” think about it... Red Sox trade away a promising prospect like Jhostynxon Garcia and Single-A pitcher Jesus Travieso just to add some depth to their rotation? what does that say about the team's priorities? are they so focused on immediate success that they're willing to sacrifice long-term potential? or is this a sign that they're trying to address some underlying issues in their organization, like inconsistent pitching?

anyway, Oviedo's got some great physical tools, no doubt about it ๐Ÿคบโ€โ™‚๏ธ but can he overcome his injury demons and become the kind of reliable starter the Red Sox need? its gonna be interesting to see how this plays out...

OMG, I'm so hyped about the Red Sox acquiring Johan Oviedo ๐Ÿคฉ!!! I know he's got a sketchy injury history, but like, can't we root for the underdog? ๐Ÿ˜‚ The kid's got potential and if they can get him healthy, watch out world! ๐Ÿ’ช Boston's rotation is getting some serious depth and I'm loving it. And I feel bad for Jhostynxon Garcia, but trade is part of the game ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Pittsburgh's gonna be like "huh?" next season when they realize what they gave up ๐Ÿ˜‚ Oviedo might not be the answer to their prayers just yet, but at least they're trying. I'm all about the underdog story and I think Boston's got this! ๐Ÿ’ฏ Andrew Bailey better come correct or else... ๐Ÿคฃ

๐Ÿคฏ I'm low-key hyped about this trade lol! Oviedo's got crazy potential and that 3.57 ERA last season was straight fire ๐Ÿ’ฅ He's like the dark horse of pitchers ๐Ÿด And with the Red Sox adding him to their rotation, they're basically saying "we gotchu" ๐Ÿ’ช Now let's see if he can stay healthy and put it all together ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿค” I think it's super exciting for the Red Sox to acquire Johan Oviedo! He's got that whole "tall and imposing" thing going on ๐Ÿ˜‚, but seriously, his career has been pretty rough due to injuries. You have to feel bad for the guy ๐Ÿค•.

But, you know what? Sometimes these types of moves can be like getting a diamond in the rough ๐Ÿ’Ž. Oviedo might not be ready just yet, but if the Sox can get him healthy and working with their pitching coach Andrew Bailey ๐Ÿ‘Š, I think he's got some untapped potential. And let's be real, 3.57 ERA ain't terrible for a guy who's had to sit out most of his season ๐Ÿค“.

Plus, trading Jhostynxon Garcia away might've been necessary if the Sox wanted to get that proven No. 2 starter they're chasing ๐Ÿ”ฅ. So, I guess you could say this move is all about depth and finding that extra spark in their rotation ๐Ÿ”‹. Fingers crossed for Oviedo! ๐Ÿ‘
