Ride the Cyclone review – teens sing for their salvation in cult musical

"Cyclone of Emotions: Teens Sing for Salvation in Bizarre yet Captivating Musical"

The eccentric production of "Ride the Cyclone" has arrived in London, and its blend of music, dance, and mysticism is as captivating as it is perplexing. This cult musical, which began life in a Canadian fringe theatre in 2009, takes six high-school choristers on a journey from death to rebirth after a catastrophic rollercoaster accident.

As the teenagers take turns performing their life stories through song, each number is expertly crafted to reveal a slice of their personality. From Ocean's saccharine ode to herself to Ricky's sartorial spectacle as a 1970s-inspired disco star, every musical selection is memorable and visually stunning. The standout performance comes from newcomer Robyn Gilbertson as Constance, whose poignant ballad showcases her impressive vocal range.

However, beneath the show's mesmerizing surface lies a narrative structure that begins to feel formulaic after a while. With each character receiving only a brief moment in the spotlight, it's challenging to connect with their stories on a deeper level. Nevertheless, this is a minor quibble for an otherwise unique and captivating musical experience.

Director Lizzi Gee's production weaves the spirit of the circus into every aspect of the show, creating an immersive world that draws the audience in. The Amazing Karnak, played by Edward Wu, serves as a compelling figurehead, guiding the teenagers through their individual performances with an otherworldly presence.

Ultimately, "Ride the Cyclone" is a musical that will leave you both bewildered and entranced. While it may benefit from some tweaks to its narrative structure, its sheer originality and emotional resonance make it a must-see for fans of eccentric theatre. With its talented cast and captivating performances, this cult musical is sure to continue its dedicated fanbase's enthusiasm for years to come.

🌪️ I just saw "Ride the Cyclone" in London and I'm still reeling from it 🤯. The music, dance, and mysticism all came together in a way that was both captivating and a bit wild 🎸. But what really got me was how each character's story was told through song - it was like they were sharing secrets with the audience 🗣️. It felt so intimate and raw. I loved Robyn Gilbertson's performance as Constance, her voice just broke my heart ❤️. The production design was also insane, it felt like we were part of this crazy circus world 🔮. Not sure if I fully understood everything that went on under the surface, but the energy was definitely infectious 🌈

I just watched "Ride the Cyclone" in London and I gotta say, it was like nothing I've ever seen before! The way they blend music, dance, and mysticism is SO captivating 🤩. But, tbh, I had a bit of trouble connecting with the characters' stories because they got such short moments on stage 🤔. Still, the performances were insane, especially that one girl Robyn Gilbertson as Constance - her voice gave me CHILLS 😍. The production value is also super high, it feels like you're part of this crazy world 🎪. Maybe a bit formulaic in the storytelling department, but overall, I'd def give it 4 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐️. Worth checking out if you love quirky theatre! 👍

I'm telling you, something fishy about this musical 🤔... like they're trying to brainwash us with all that positivity and emotional release 😒. These teenagers singing for salvation? Sounds like some kinda mind control experiment to me 👀. And what's with the director weaving circus magic everywhere? Like she's trying to distract us from something 🎪. I'm not buying it, fam 💸... this whole thing just feels off 🚫. Don't get me wrong, it's got its moments, but you can't fool a conspiracy theorist like me 🔍... there's always more to the story 😏.

omg i just saw the trailer for this musical thingy and i'm HOOKED 🤩 it sounds so trippy and emotional! how do they manage to make six teenagers sing about their lives like that? is it all choreographed or can they actually freestyle or something? 🎵 also what's up with the weird circus vibes... does anyone know if its based on real events or just some crazy imagination? 🤔

OMG u gotta see this musical its so weird & wonderful 🤪 like, they take these teenagers who were in a rollercoaster accident & make them sing about their lives - it sounds super cheesy but trust me its not! Robyn Gilbertson as Constance is low-key amazing her vocal range is insane 💯 and the whole production with Lizzi Gee's direction is just wow. I mean, I get what the critics are saying about the narrative structure being formulaic, but I didn't even notice that cuz I was too busy being mesmerized by the whole circus thing 🎪. The Amazing Karnak is like this mystical figurehead who guides the teens through their performances & its so trippy 🌈. Anyway, if u r into weird & wonderful theatre, u gotta check out "Ride the Cyclone" ASAP!

idk why people r so obsessed with this show lol, its just a bunch of teens singin' about their lives 🤷‍♀️. i mean don't get me wrong, the vocals r tight and all but...is it really that deep? 🎵 6 char's tryna be unique in like 10 min performance each? feels kinda formulaic to me 😐

🌪️ I think the key to making "Ride the Cyclone" truly unforgettable is finding that balance between its unique quirks and a more cohesive narrative. The show has so many memorable moments, but it's like trying to catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of your eye – you know it's there, but you can't quite grasp it. Still, I think the experience is definitely worth taking for the ride! 🎪

OMG u gotta check out "Ride the Cyclone"!!! 🎭 Its like nothing u've ever seen b4 - music, dance, mysticism all mixed together in a crazy beautiful way 💫 The cast is insane 🤩 especially Robyn Gilbertson as Constance she's got vocals for DAYS!!! 🌕 but yeah its def got some formulaic bits 🤔 the story gets a bit predictable after a while 🚂 still tho its SO worth it u gotta see it on stage 🎟️

omg i just saw the trailer for this musical thingy and i am SO here for it!!! 🤩 the music looks insane and i love how each character gets to showcase their personality through song - constance's ballad gave me CHILLS 😭 edward wu as the amazing karnak sounds like a total scene stealer too! 🤔 what i'm not sure about is the narrative structure, but like, who cares when the music is this good? 🎵 cant wait to see it live and experience that circus vibe for myself!!! 💖

I'm not entirely sold on the show, but at the same time I love how bold & experimental it is 🤯💥 the music is indeed super catchy & the performers are all so talented! I mean, Robyn Gilbertson's voice gives me ALL the feels 😭 but what really got me was how much I was invested in the story of The Amazing Karnak - he's like this mystic figure who helps guide these teens through their struggles... it's kinda trippy but also super compelling 🌌🎸 i think the issue with the show being a bit formulaic is that it makes some of the characters feel more like caricatures than actual people, but overall I'd def recommend checking out "Ride the Cyclone" if you're feeling adventurous 🎟️

I'm not really sure what's going on with this "Ride the Cyclone" thing... it sounds like some kinda weird rollercoaster ride of emotions 🎠💔. Six teens singing about themselves, and a dude in a disco suit? What's next, a musical about memes?! 😂 But seriously, I'm curious to see if it lives up to all this hype 🤔. The idea of an immersive world with a circus theme sounds kinda cool... but 1970s-inspired disco music? That's just plain bizarre 😂. Guess I'll have to check it out and form my own opinion 🎭

idk about the whole "salvation" vibe 🤔...it feels like the teens are just trying to find their purpose after a crazy accident? it's all very...inspiring, i guess 🙏. but sometimes i feel like they're being a bit too convenient in their story arcs 🤷‍♀️...still, robyn gilbertson's voice is insane! 👀 and edward wu's character is super interesting - what's up with that circus/salvation combo? 🎪 the music is catchy tho 💃. overall, it's a wild ride but i'm not entirely sold on the narrative just yet...

I just saw the weirdest thing on stage last night 🤯... but that's what I love about theatre - it makes me question everything! What if our lives were like a rollercoaster ride, full of twists and turns that we're not even aware of? The way those teenagers sang their stories to each other, it felt so raw and honest... did they really believe they'd found salvation in music, or was it just a desperate cry for help?

And then there's the theme of identity - how much do our songs define us? Do we become who we are when we sing, or is that just a facade to hide behind? I keep thinking about my own life choices and how they might be like those teenagers' songs... would anyone else understand me if they heard them out loud?

This show has got me all sorts of emotions swirling inside 🌪️... I'm not sure what's real and what's not anymore.

omg i'm OBSESSED with Ride the Cyclone!!! the energy in that show is like nothing i've ever experienced before 🌪️🎶 robyn gilbertson as constance gave me CHILLS her voice is seriously insane! and edward wu as the amazing karnak is like the ultimate mystical guide 🤩 can't wait to see this again 💖

I'm telling you, something fishy is going on here 🤑. This "Ride the Cyclone" musical is like a wild goose chase – all flashy lights and pretty songs, but scratch beneath the surface and it feels like they're trying to distract us from something. I mean, six teenagers singing about their lives in song? It's just too convenient. And don't even get me started on the "mystical" circus vibe... sounds like they're peddling some sort of New Age mumbo-jumbo 🧘‍♀️. But hey, if it gets people talking and coming to see it, I'm all for it 😏. Just keep an open mind, folks!

i just got out of the most bizarre yet amazing musical in london 🤯 "ride the cyclone" is like nothing i've ever seen before! its a weird combo of music, dance, and mysticism that will leave you both confused and mesmerized 🎵🕺 the cast is super talented esp robyn gilbertson as constance her ballad was so moving 😭 but yeah maybe they should work on making each character's story more fleshed out 🤔 still loved it tho, would def recommend to anyone looking for something new and different 👍

I went to see this show with my friends and we were all like "what the heck just happened?" It was so weird but in a good way 🤯. The singing and dancing was insane! But yeah, I kinda get what you mean about it feeling formulaic - it's like they're following this same structure for every character. Maybe they should mix it up a bit more?

I loved the bit where Constance sang that powerful ballad tho 🎶. Robyn Gilbertson is seriously talented! And Edward Wu was so cool as The Amazing Karnak 👻. I didn't really understand what the whole show was about, but in a weird way, it kinda worked? It's like they're tapping into this collective unconscious or something 🤪.

Overall, I'd say it's definitely worth checking out if you're into that sort of thing. Just don't go in expecting a normal musical, 'kay? 😉
