Robbie Williams: Britpop review | Alexis Petridis's album of the week

A Surprise Release and a Britpop Revival: Robbie Williams' 13th Album Drops Without Warning

The highly anticipated 13th album from British pop icon Robbie Williams has finally arrived, with little explanation as to why it wasn't released in October, when the title was meant to coincide with the resurgence of 90s nostalgia sparked by the Oasis reunion. The album's announcement was shrouded in mystery, with Williams unveiling fake Britpop-themed blue plaques around London and staging a press conference at the iconic Groucho Club.

The surprise move came after the initial release date was postponed, allowing Williams to avoid competing with Taylor Swift's highly anticipated album 'The Life of a Showgirl'. The decision now seems to have been driven by commercial considerations, as the record is likely to give Williams a better chance of breaking the UK chart record for most No 1 albums ever.

However, the Britpop album itself feels rather peculiar. With its title and promotional materials heavily focused on the genre, fans might expect an unapologetic celebration of the sound that catapulted Williams to stardom in the mid-1990s. Instead, the album serves as a somewhat nostalgic trip down memory lane for Williams himself.

The first single, 'Spies', marks a bold return to Britpop's glam-rock influences, with Williams drawing inspiration from his experiences during this period. However, when it doesn't quite hit the mark, the song often feels like an attempt at pastiche rather than genuine homage.

A closer listen reveals some unexpected gems, including the synth-heavy 'Morrissey', a quirky tribute to the former Smiths frontman co-authored by Gary Barlow, and 'Human', a sweeping electronic ballad featuring Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy. These tracks demonstrate Williams' ability to craft engaging, if unconventional, songs that defy genre expectations.

Ultimately, however, Britpop is an album without a defining track, lacking the kind of emotional impact as his 1997 solo debut 'Life Thru a Lens'. This leaves it in an interesting position โ€“ it may well be the album Robbie Williams wanted to make when he left Take That. Equally, he must be incredibly glad that he didn't.

With its blend of nostalgia and innovation, Britpop is never less than engaging, even if it doesn't quite live up to the promise of its title. As an exercise in musical curiosity, it's certainly worth a listen, if not necessarily for fans who were expecting a more traditional Britpop revival.

๐Ÿคฏ just dropped outta nowhere and now Robbie Williams has 13 albums ๐ŸŽถ! stats show his sales have gone from ยฃ15m to ยฃ50m in the first week alone ๐Ÿ“ˆ it's crazy how this album dropped without warning, considering the whole Oasis reunion thing ๐Ÿ‘€. Britpop revival or not, let's look at some numbers - 75% of his fans are between 40-60 years old ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿคฏ, who knew so many would still be rocking out to 'Spies' ๐ŸŽธ.

chart performance shows UK sales increased by 250% compared to his last album ๐Ÿ’ฅ. what's interesting is the gap in age between his fans and the artists influencing him - a 30-year-old Williams drawing inspiration from Smiths & Oasis... maybe this is why Britpop feels like an exercise in nostalgia ๐ŸŽญ. here's a chart showing UK Top 40 performance over the past year:

week 1: #2
week 4: #1
week 8: #3
week 12: #5

average weekly increase: +0.7%

sales comparison to Taylor Swift's album ( released last month):

Robbie Williams - 50k units sold / ยฃ15m revenue
Taylor Swift - 40k units sold / ยฃ10m revenue

I dunno about this one ๐Ÿค”... Robbie Williams' 13th album feels like a cash-grab to me. I mean, who thought releasing an album without warning was a good idea? ๐Ÿ˜’ It's just going to confuse the fans. And don't even get me started on the Britpop revival - it's all been done before, you know? ๐Ÿ™„ I love Robbie Williams' songs like "Angels" and "Let Me Entertain You", but this album feels like he's trying too hard to recapture his past glory. The only good thing is that single "Spies"... it's a bit of a banger ๐Ÿ’ฅ But overall, I'd say it's just another overhyped release in the music industry ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ˜’

omg i remember listening to Life Thru a Lens on my Discman ๐Ÿ“€ back in 97 and it was like the soundtrack to my teenage years... Robbie's new album is defo not making waves with that first single 'Spies' though - its like he's trying too hard to be cool again ๐Ÿ˜’. but on the flip side, i love how he's experimenting with synths on some of the tracks... like 'Morrissey' tho? what even is that ๐Ÿค”? still, gotta give credit where credit is due - if he was gonna release this album for real back in 98 it would've been a classic, but imo this one's just an interesting curiosity ๐ŸŽง

I'm loving this surprise drop from Robbie Williams ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽถ! Who wouldn't want to dive back into the Britpop era ๐Ÿ™Œ? I mean, the guy's been on a break, and it's awesome that he's decided to take the reins again ๐Ÿ’ช. And let's be real, 'Spies' is already slaying the game ๐Ÿ”ฅ... even if it doesn't perfectly capture the essence of Britpop. But hey, those unexpected gems like 'Morrissey' and 'Human' are giving me all the feels โค๏ธ. It's a bit unconventional, but that's what makes it so interesting!

omg i'm so confused about this new album by robbie williams i mean i love britpop and all but it feels like he's just trying to recapture the past instead of making something new with it ๐Ÿ˜‚ his first single 'spies' is kinda cool but some of the other songs feel like they're just trying too hard to be nostalgic ๐Ÿค” i need a few more listens to get my opinion on it tho

awww man i feel u ๐Ÿค— this album release is like such a letdown, especially after all that hype and anticipation... i get why they wanted to avoid competing with taylor swift tho ๐Ÿ˜ but honestly the album feels kinda half-baked? ๐Ÿค” there are some great tracks like "morrissey" and "human" though! ๐Ÿ‘ those songs are like total bops ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿฝ what's up with that though? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ it's like he's trying to fit into a specific genre or something... idk maybe i'm just being too harsh ๐Ÿ˜… guess i'll have to give the album another listen and see if i can get on board ๐Ÿ‘

idk why they had to drop this album outta nowhere lol ๐Ÿค”. i mean, i get it, avoiding the Taylor Swift drama is smart, but now we're just left with no build up or hype whatsoever ๐Ÿ’ฅ. and honestly, the first single 'Spies' feels kinda...off? like, its trying too hard to be a nostalgic throwback ๐ŸŽธ. but then there are tracks like 'Morrissey' which is actually pretty cool, and that electronic ballad 'Human' with Jesse & Joy is fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. it's like rob williams was never gonna make a traditional britpop album anyway ๐Ÿ‘€. the whole thing feels kinda experimental, which i can appreciate, but sometimes just stickin to the plan would've been better ๐Ÿ™„.

๐ŸŽ‰ I'm kinda underwhelmed by Robbie Williams' new album - I mean, 13th album already? It feels like he's trying to recapture the magic of his Take That days and Oasis era all over again ๐Ÿคฏ, but it's just not that cohesive. Don't get me wrong, 'Spies' is a solid return to Britpop form, but 'Morrissey' is actually pretty cool, I love the Gary Barlow collaboration ๐Ÿ˜Š. And 'Human' is like, wow, that's some serious electronic pop vibes ๐ŸŒƒ. But overall, it feels like he's playing it safe and not really pushing the boundaries of his sound. That being said, if you're a die-hard Britpop fan or just curious about what Robbie Williams is up to now, it might be worth checking out ๐ŸŽง

omg ๐Ÿค” i'm so confused about this album drop! why wait till now?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ didn't they think we'd be too distracted by the oasis reunion? ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ‘€ and what's with all the nostalgia vibes? is this like a trip down memory lane for robbie himself or what? ๐Ÿ’ญ anyway, it sounds like there are some okay tracks on here... morrissey is actually kinda cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž and jesse & joy on human is a nice touch ๐ŸŽถ but overall i'm not sure if this is a true britpop revival or just robbie being his usual eccentric self ๐Ÿคช

lol what's with all these surprise album releases anymore? ๐Ÿค” i mean i love robbie williams but 13th album out of the blue is just too much... and what's up with the britpop vibes? it feels like he's trying to recapture his heyday or something ๐Ÿ˜… i remember back in 97 when life thru a lens came out, that was pure magic ๐ŸŽถ. this album might not be bad, but it doesn't have that same special somethin' ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ still gonna give it a listen tho ๐Ÿ’•

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ I am SOOOO hyped about Robbie Williams' new album!!! ๐ŸŽ‰ I've been waiting for this moment for ages and it's finally here!!! ๐Ÿ˜ I don't know what was going on with the release date but I'm glad they pushed it back so we got a masterpiece instead of just another generic pop album ๐Ÿคช. I love how nostalgic it feels, like a time capsule of Britpop's heyday ๐Ÿ’ซ and "Spies" is giving me LIFE!!! ๐Ÿ”ฅ The fact that there are some unexpected gems hidden in the tracks is amazing too! ๐ŸŽถ I've already listened to "Morrissey" and "Human" on repeat ๐Ÿ˜‚. It may not be his most emotional album but it's definitely a solid one, if you ask me ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

OMG u guys ๐Ÿคฏ I'm so confused about Robbie Williams' new album! He drops this super nostalgic Britpop record with these amazing synths & guitars but like... where's the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ? The title is all over his Instagram & promo pics but when you listen to it, it feels kinda... safe? ๐Ÿ™ƒ I mean, he puts out 'Spies' as a single & it's cool & all, but sometimes it just feels like he's trying too hard to recapture the past. On the other hand, some tracks like 'Morrissey' are SO quirky & fun ๐ŸŽ‰! Anyway, it's still worth checking out because... why not? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

omg did you hear about Robbie Williams' new album?! ๐Ÿคฏ it's like, super surprise drop and I am SO here for it ๐Ÿ˜‚ he did everything from fake blue plaques to a whole press conference at the Groucho Club - talk about making an entrance! ๐Ÿ’ฅ the first single 'Spies' is giving me all the 90s Britpop vibes but like... sometimes it feels like he's trying too hard? ๐Ÿค” i'm still on the fence about the album though, there are some tracks that are just fire ๐Ÿ’ฅ like 'Morrissey' with Gary Barlow co-writing it - what's up with that?! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ and then there's 'Human' which is like this sweeping electronic ballad... I need more of that in my life ๐ŸŽถ anyway, i'll def be checking it out & seeing if it lives up to the hype

๐Ÿค” Robbie Williams' new album is outta nowhere ๐ŸŽ‰! I mean, no warning whatsoever ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. It's like he wanted to catch everyone off guard ๐Ÿ‘€. And honestly, I think it's kinda smart ๐Ÿ’ก. I mean, who wants to compete with Taylor Swift's album? Not a fan of Swift, but still ๐Ÿ™„.

Anyway, this Britpop revival is cool, I guess ๐Ÿ˜Ž. It's like he's revisiting the past ๐Ÿ”™, but not in a cheesy way ๐Ÿ˜œ. 'Spies' is actually pretty catchy ๐ŸŽต, and that Morrissey track with Gary Barlow? ๐Ÿ”ฅ. But, it's all kinda hit or miss ๐Ÿค”.

This album's got some hidden gems ๐Ÿ’Ž, like 'Human' - who knew Williams could do electronic pop? ๐Ÿš€. It's like he's trying to defy genre expectations ๐ŸŒˆ, which is dope ๐Ÿ‘.

I gotta admit, though... it feels like an album without a defining track ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Like, what's the one song that'll make people go wild? ๐ŸŽถ I guess that's just not this album's vibe ๐Ÿ˜.

Still, I'd give it a listen ๐Ÿ‘‚. It's like he's putting out something new and unexpected ๐Ÿ”ฎ. Not necessarily for fans who wanted more traditional Britpop, but for those curious about Williams' musical journey ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ.
