Rory McIlroy seven shots off halfway lead at Dubai Desert Classic with Patrick Reed out in front in DP World Tour event

Rory McIlroy Struggles to Find Rhythm as Patrick Reed Takes Lead at Dubai Desert Classic.

Seven-shot deficit behind leader Patrick Reed after second round at Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Northern Irishman, who won the tournament in 2023 and 2024, carded a three-under 69 on Friday, improving his one-over-par score from the first day.

McIlroy trails Reed by nine strokes but remains in contention for victory. The Northern Irishman had six birdies and three bogeys to move up the leaderboard.

"I felt I did pretty well," McIlroy said after his round. "Conditions got trickier as the day went on...I hit a lot of good shots today."

McIlroy, who was eight strokes behind Francesco Molinari at the end of the first round, moved into contention with a solid second-round score.

USA's Patrick Reed leads the field by nine strokes after a six-under-par 66. The 2018 Masters champion had four birdies and an eagle during his round.

England's Andy Sullivan is just one shot behind Reed, while defending champion Tyrrell Hatton trails the leader by four strokes.

Tommy Fleetwood had a close call on the second hole, hitting a brilliant bunker shot that almost resulted in an eagle.

๐Ÿค” I'm a bit surprised to see Rory McIlroy struggling to find his rhythm after winning the tournament last year ๐Ÿ†. He's still got 9 strokes behind Patrick Reed, but he's definitely not out of contention... yet ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. It'll be interesting to see how he bounces back from this second round. Meanwhile, Reed is just killing it on the course right now ๐Ÿ’ช. Maybe Rory needs to go back and watch some footage of his own game from last year to figure out what went wrong? ๐Ÿ“บ

I feel like Rory's struggles to find his rhythm are really reflective of how it is to stay at the top in golf ๐Ÿค”. I mean, even though he won last year and the year before, that doesn't mean you can just coast on your past achievements. You gotta keep grinding every single week to maintain that level. And let's be real, 9 strokes behind is a big gap to close, but Rory's still in contention so I'm keeping an eye on him ๐Ÿ“ˆ. Patrick Reed's game is on fire right now though, and I love how confident he looks out there โ›ณ๏ธ. It'll be interesting to see if Rory can make his move coming into the final round ๐ŸŽ‰

I'm watching this Rory McIlroy guy struggling to find his groove again ๐Ÿค”. Reminds me of when Tiger Woods used to dominate back in the day... now he's trying to catch up with Patrick Reed, and it's like he's playing catch-up all over again ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. I mean, I know Rory won the tournament last year, but that was back in 2023... what was that like, right? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Anyway, I think McIlroy's got a good chance of making a comeback, but we'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. Still, it's not like he's giving up โ€“ that's for sure! ๐Ÿ‘Š

๐Ÿค” The data says Patrick Reed is killin' it out there with that 6-under-par 66! ๐Ÿ“ˆ His birdie-to-bogey ratio is insane, 4 birds to 1 bogey. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is still in the game, but I think he needs to get his game face on and start making some clutch putts if he wants to take down Reed. ๐Ÿ”ฅ The stats also show that conditions got trickier as the day went on, with winds picking up and making it harder for players to navigate the course. ๐ŸŒช๏ธ Also, fun fact: Tommy Fleetwood's bunker shot was ranked #2 in terms of difficulty, according to the PGA tour's Shot Tracer tool! ๐Ÿ“Š What's your take on this leaderboard?

McIlroy needs to find his mojo back ASAP ๐Ÿคž...it's like he just lost steam, you know? That 3-under-par round was a solid effort, but it's not enough when Patrick Reed is crushing it by nine strokes! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Still, Rory's in contention, so that's something. He might need to tweak his strategy or get some advice from the pros. And can we talk about how lucky Tommy Fleetwood was with that bunker shot?! ๐Ÿ™Œ That eagle attempt was insane!

I'm not impressed with these new-fangled golf gadgets everyone's been talking about ๐Ÿค”. Can't say I understand why they need drones to track their shots and whatnot. It's just gonna be one more thing for them to mess up, if you ask me ๐Ÿ˜’. And don't even get me started on the virtual reality headsets they're using now...it's all just a bunch of hooey! ๐Ÿšฎ I mean, who needs all that fancy tech when you've got good old-fashioned focus and skill? The real golfers know how to win without all that extra baggage ๐Ÿ’ช. And what's up with these tournaments being played in the desert? Can't they find a course somewhere with a little more...greenery? ๐ŸŒณ

Man, this Dubai Desert Classic is shaping up to be quite the battle! ๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ Patrick Reed's nine-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy has got me wondering if anyone can dethrone him - and I've gotta say, I'm a bit surprised by how well McIlroy bounced back from that first round. He still trails by nine strokes, but he's definitely in the mix now. ๐Ÿค” And can you believe Tommy Fleetwood's bunker shot on the second hole? That was pure magic! ๐Ÿ˜ It'll be interesting to see how things play out over the weekend.

omg i dont get why they have to play golf so early in the morning lol ๐Ÿคฏ i tried watching it last year and just cant wake up for 7 am lol anyway back to mcirolly he's having a tough time huh? idk how hard it is to find rhythm on the course though ๐Ÿค” maybe its like riding a bike or something? can someone explain me how golf works again? ๐Ÿ™ƒ

๐Ÿ˜Š So Rory's having a tough day, huh? I feel him though - one round of golf can totally turn your momentum around. He was down by 8 strokes after the first day and still manages to climb up the leaderboard with a decent score. The guy's got game! ๐ŸŽพ On the other hand, Patrick Reed is killing it... who wouldn't want to be 9 strokes ahead of the pack? ๐Ÿค‘ I'm loving how excited he must be about this lead - gotta stay focused for the rest of the tournament though! โฑ๏ธ

I'm so confused about this golf thing... I mean, I thought Rory McIlroy was gonna smash it this week but now he's like 9 shots behind Patrick Reed ๐Ÿคฏ๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Like, how can that happen? And what's with all these birdies and bogeys, isn't that just a bunch of fancy words for "hit the ball in the hole" or "miss it"? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Anyways, I guess it's still McIlroy's game to lose... he's still in contention, so that's good ๐Ÿคž.

I'm surprised how many people are putting all their eggs into McIlroy's basket ๐Ÿค”...he won this thing last year and it's like he's still got the magic ๐Ÿ’ซ...but then again, Patrick Reed is on fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ, I mean who needs 7 shots to win when you're playing that well? ๐Ÿ˜Ž...Andy Sullivan seems like a solid pick for me, but I gotta give it to Reed, his game is really firing right now ๐Ÿ’ช...what's with the eagle from Tommy Fleetwood though ๐Ÿคฏ, was that even on par? ๐Ÿ™„

I'm loving how Rory McIlroy is still holding it down out there! 9 shots behind Patrick Reed might seem like a lot, but with his game like this, he's definitely got a shot at making a comeback. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I mean, six birdies and three bogeys ain't too shabby! And that bunker shot by Tommy Fleetwood was pure magic ๐Ÿคฉ. It's gonna be so interesting to see how the rest of the tournament unfolds. Anyone got 2 bucks on Rory taking down Patrick? ๐Ÿ’ธ

idk why Rory can't find his rhythm rn ๐Ÿค”๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ he was so dominant last year ๐Ÿค‘ but now it's like he's playing catch-up... 9 strokes behind and it's getting intense ๐Ÿ’ฆ anyone think Reed's gonna hold on? ๐Ÿคž or is this just another set back for McIlroy? ๐Ÿ˜”

omg rory mcilroy's game is off right now ๐Ÿค”๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ i mean he still got some birdies but 3 bogeys ain't nothin' to brag about ๐Ÿ˜ฌ and his lead is like 9 shots behind patrick reed lol what can u do? ๐Ÿ‘Ž i feel for him tho, he was so strong last year in this tournament ๐Ÿ† it's def not gonna be easy for him to catch up now ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ maybe he needs a major chill session or somethin' to get his focus back ๐Ÿ˜Œ

So Rory McIlroy is struggling to get back into the zone ๐Ÿค”... I mean, he's still got game, but Patrick Reed is just firing on all cylinders right now ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Like, who wouldn't want to shoot 6 under par and take a 9-stroke lead? That eagle at the end of his round was pure magic โœจ! Not sure what McIlroy needs to do differently, but he's still in contention so that's gotta count for something ๐Ÿ˜Š. I'm loving Tommy Fleetwood's bunker shot skills though... whoa what a shot! ๐ŸŽฏ

The Dubai Desert Classic has witnessed a dramatic shift in fortunes, with Patrick Reed's scintillating performance catapulting him to the forefront of contention ๐ŸŒด. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy's struggles to find his rhythm are nothing new, and it will be fascinating to see how he navigates this challenging course to reclaim his position at the top ๐Ÿ’ช. The disparity between these two golfing heavyweights is striking, with Reed's eagle and four birdies showcasing his mastery of the course ๐ŸŒ๏ธ. Will McIlroy be able to close the gap and challenge for the title? Only time will tell โฐ.

I don't get why they still have that ridiculous leaderboard format ๐Ÿค”. It's so easy to lose track of who's leading when there are like 5-6 players separated by huge gaps. Can't they just simplify it or give us a better way to visualize the standings?

And what's up with the Eagle celebrations? All those eagles are getting a ton of attention ๐ŸŽ‰, but I'm over here watching Rory McIlroy try to catch up and there's no one even talking about him. It's not all about Reed and his eagle-boosting round, guys! Give some love to the rest of us who care about the actual competition ๐Ÿ’ช.

Also, can someone explain why they still don't have mobile-friendly scoresheets? I'm trying to watch golf on my phone during a break at work and it's super frustrating because I can barely see anything ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. Get with the times, guys!

I'm not surprised to see Rory struggling to find his rhythm ๐Ÿค”. He's been on top of the world after those back-to-back wins last year ๐Ÿ‘, and sometimes it takes a bit for someone to readjust. Patrick Reed is playing some amazing golf right now ๐ŸŒŸ, and I think he's got a good chance of taking home that trophy! The way he played today was just incredible, and I love how he's staying calm under pressure ๐Ÿ˜Ž. Rory's still in the mix, though, so we'll have to see what happens over the weekend โฐ. It's going to be an exciting finish, for sure ๐ŸŽ‰.
