Scarlett Johansson and Cate Blanchett back campaign accusing AI firms of theft

Talent Unites Against AI Theft Allegations: Hollywood Stars and Creators Demand Fair Use of Creative Work

A recent campaign has launched, backed by over 800 creative professionals, including prominent figures like Scarlett Johansson and Cate Blanchett, to tackle the issue of artificial intelligence (AI) companies allegedly exploiting American creators' work without permission or regard for copyright laws. Dubbed "Stealing Isn't Innovation," this effort urges tech firms to obtain licensing deals and partnerships with creative industries rather than relying on unauthorized use of copyrighted material.

The campaign's statement asserts that artists, writers, and creators are being unfairly treated by AI companies, which claim the practice of using vast amounts of publicly available data is justified under "fair use" doctrine. However, this stance has sparked numerous lawsuits in the US over copyright infringement claims related to AI-generated content.

Last year, actor Scarlett Johansson faced a backlash when OpenAI's voice assistant used her vocal likeness without permission. The AI giant subsequently removed the voice from its platform.

Several high-profile signatories have joined forces with Johansson and Blanchett, including musician Cyndi Lauper, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Gilligan previously likened AI to a "world's most expensive and energy-intensive plagiarism machine."

Critics argue that tech firms should compensate creators for using their work without authorization. While some companies have signed licensing agreements with content owners, this approach raises questions about the level of fair compensation and the extent to which it addresses the issue at hand.

In response to mounting pressure, the UK government recently announced a review into proposed changes that would allow AI companies to use copyrighted material without permission, unless artists explicitly opt out. This move has sparked concerns among creative professionals, who argue for greater regulation and clearer guidelines on fair use in AI development.

The recent surge in activism against AI theft allegations is a testament to the growing unease among creatives about the exploitation of their work by tech giants 💡. It's disheartening to see how AI companies have been using vast amounts of publicly available data without regard for copyright laws, sparking numerous lawsuits and unfair treatment of artists 🤯. The fact that high-profile figures like Scarlett Johansson and Cate Blanchett are joining forces with other creatives is a clear indication that the industry is pushing back against this issue 💪.

While some companies have taken steps to obtain licensing deals, it's essential to recognize that fair compensation for creators who see their work used without permission remains a pressing concern 🤑. The proposed changes in the UK government's review are a welcome step towards greater regulation, but more needs to be done to address the scale of this problem and ensure clearer guidelines on fair use in AI development 🔒. Ultimately, it's crucial that we find a balance between innovation and respecting the creative rights of individuals 💻.

I'm so done with these tech giants thinkin they can just swoop in and use our work without payin' a dime 🤑. I mean, come on, Scarlett Johansson is a superstar and her voice was used without permission by OpenAI - that's just low, fam 👎. And now we got all these celebrities joinin together to fight for what's right, like Cyndi Lauper and Vince Gilligan... it's about time someone stood up to these AI companies 🚫. I'm all for innovation, but not at the expense of our creative livelihoods 💼. We need better regulation and clearer guidelines on fair use - it's not that hard, folks! 🤔

OMG, can you believe some of these big names are speaking out against AI theft? 🤯 Scarlett Johansson's whole situation with OpenAI was super shady, but I'm glad she's not the only one taking a stand. It's wild to think about how much data these companies have access to and how they're using it without so much as a by-your-leave 😒.

I feel like we need some better guidelines on fair use in AI development, you know? The UK government should totally be looking into this. It's not just about the creators, either – think about all the artists and writers who are just trying to make a living off their work 🎨. The companies might say they're "innovating" with AI, but when it comes down to it, it's just exploiting people's creativity for profit 💸.

It's like, if you want to use someone's voice or writing without permission, you gotta pay for it, right? I mean, fair compensation is key here. And what's the point of "fair use" doctrine if it doesn't actually protect creators? 🤔

I mean can you believe these big AI companies are just using anyone's work like it's nothing? Like Scarlett Johansson got her voice used without permission on an assistant and the company had to pull it out of their platform! 🤯 What's next, them using your favorite song in a commercial without paying the artist? It's all about making money from our creativity, but who gets paid in the end? The AI companies are just getting richer off our work. This whole fair use thing is just a bunch of mumbo jumbo, they need to just get licensed like everyone else! 💸🎵

🤝 I think its pretty reasonable that the creatives want to be fairly compensated for their work when some big tech companies are basically just using it without asking. Like, if you're going to make money off of someone elses idea or likeness, they should at least give a nod to the original creator 🙏.

I also don't think its fair to say that the whole "fair use" thing is open season for AI companies. I mean, yeah, it can be kinda murky who owns what when you're talking about massive amounts of public data being used... but thats exactly why we need clearer guidelines and regulations in place 💡.

The problem is that if these big tech firms just do whatever they want without checking with the creatives first, its gonna lead to a whole bunch of problems down the line. And I think its actually pretty cool that all these high-profile creators are banding together to make their voices heard 🎉. It shows that there's still a sense of community and solidarity in the creative industry, which is something to be celebrated 🌈.

idk how much more of this "fair use" nonsense i can take 🙄. these ai companies are basically saying they can just use whatever whoever created it without permission? like, no thanks 🚫. the whole point of copyright is to protect our work and get some actual compensation for it. instead, tech firms just want to swoop in and use everything as their own personal plaything 🤖. it's like, if i make a sick beat, i want to be able to sell it or license it or whatever, not have some random ai company come along and use it without asking 🤑. the fact that these companies are trying to justify this by saying they're just "using public data" is laughable 😂. just because something's publicly available doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with it 🤔. some serious regulation needs to go down, imo 💸.
