New Trailer for Sci-Fi Satire 'Yellow Cake' Debuts Ahead of Rotterdam Premiere
A trailer has been released for Tiago Melo's upcoming sci-fi satirical drama "Yellow Cake," which is set to premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Tiger Competition. The film, produced by Urânio Filmes, promises a unique blend of satire and social commentary.
The movie follows a group of scientists in Brazil who attempt to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito through a secret experiment codenamed "Yellow Cake." Using uranium extracted from the region, they aim to sterilize the mosquitoes and contain the spread of dengue fever. However, when the experiment fails, it's up to one of the scientists, Rúbia Ribeiro, played by Rejane Faria, to join forces with local prospectors to reverse the imminent catastrophe.
The film is set in the Brazilian city of Picuí and delves into themes of science, power, and global politics. In an interview, director Tiago Melo explained that he aimed to create a "satire and reflection on Brazil's long-standing relationship with global powers that claim to 'help,' but often turn the country into a laboratory for their ideas."
Starring Faria, Valmir do Côco, Spencer Callahan, and Tânia Maria, who also appears in Oscar-nominated "The Secret Agent," "Yellow Cake" is set to premiere at Rotterdam in February. The film will be produced by Carol Ferreira, Leonardo Sette, Luiz Barbosa, and Melo, with the production companies Lucinda, Jaraguá, and Urânio, and co-producers Olhar and Cinemascópio.
