Scotland call on Gray and Cherry for Six Nations

Scotland manager Gregor Townsend has announced a 40-man squad for this year's Six Nations, with several players making a return to the team. Experienced pair Jonny Gray and Dave Cherry are among those to be called back into action, while young Edinburgh duo Liam McConnell and Freddy Douglas will also feature.

Gray, who plays hooker for Bordeaux, joins fellow stalwarts Grant Gilchrist and Scott Cummings in the front row, with George Turner and Ewan Ashman providing additional options. Meanwhile, Cherry, 35, is set to make his first start in over a year after playing in Pro D2 for Vannes.

The back row selection has also been bolstered by the inclusion of Jamie Ritchie, Josh Bayliss, and Magnus Bradbury. The forwards have a mix of experience and youth, with several players having previously played for Scotland's national teams.

Townsend stated that he is confident in his squad's ability to compete at the highest level, particularly after the two-week recovery period. He acknowledged that injuries are inevitable but emphasized that rotation will be key in maintaining the team's fitness levels throughout the tournament.

However, there has been controversy surrounding some of the players' omissions, including Cam Henderson and Gregor Hiddleston. Hiddleston, who plays hooker for Glasgow, was expected to feature prominently after his impressive form last season but failed to make the cut.

The squad will be announced in full on Thursday, with Scotland set to face England at Murrayfield on February 7 before hosting Italy a week later. The final round of fixtures takes place in Dublin on March 14.

πŸ€” I'm intrigued by Townsend's squad selection, which seems to strike a balance between experience and youth 🌟. While some omissions may have raised eyebrows, particularly regarding Hiddleston, it's worth noting that the coach has clearly weighed factors such as form, fitness, and team dynamics πŸ“Š. The inclusion of players like Gray and Cherry, who've been away from the national scene for a while, adds an exciting element to the mix πŸ”₯. With several new faces in the squad, I'm curious to see how Scotland's rotation strategy will play out πŸ”„ – can they maintain their fitness levels without sacrificing team cohesion? Only time (and further announcements) will tell πŸ‘€

I'm like totally bummed out that some of the youngsters didn't make it into the squad πŸ€”... I mean, Cam Henderson and Gregor Hiddleston were always gonna be solid players for Scotland, you know? But at the same time, I get it, Townsend's gotta balance experience with youth and all that jazz πŸ’‘. Still, can't help but think what could've been if they'd given those guys a shot πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. On the flip side, it's awesome to see Jonny Gray and Dave Cherry back in the mix – that front row is looking like a beast 🐺! Bring on the Six Nations! ⚑️

πŸ€” seems like Townsend's strategy is all about balance between experience and youth. Rotation makes sense but gotta wonder what happened to Henderson... thought he was in the mix for sure. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

omg i'm so hyped for the six nations this year 🀩! love how townsend has brought back some of the experienced players like gray and cherry, they'll definitely be a force to be reckoned with on the pitch πŸ’ͺ. but i feel bad for hiddleston and henderson who didn't make the cut πŸ˜”. 40-man squad is a lot, i hope they can rotate the players well without getting anyone too tired 🀯. scotland vs england at murrayfield sounds like an epic match! ⚽️🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

idk why Townsend's team is getting so much criticism lol πŸ€” but like seriously can't he just make the most of the players he has instead of keeping them all in reserve πŸ™„? Gray and Cherry are both super experienced, so like what's not to trust them? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ also, I feel bad for Hiddleston, dude got snubbed πŸ˜” but on the other hand, I'm low-key kinda glad he didn't make it back in time cuz he was playing way too much last season and needed a break πŸ™

anyway, I think Townsend's squad looks solid (ish) 🀞, and with that two-week recovery period, they'll be ready to take on the best of Europe πŸ’ͺ but still, gotta wonder what could've been if they'd included some other players πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ? anyway, can't wait for the Scotland vs England match at Murrayfield! πŸ”΄

πŸ€” gotta love how Townsend is being all confident about his squad but then there's this controversy surrounding some omissions πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ cam henderson and hiddleston are both solid players who got snubbed πŸ™„ what's going on here? did they not get picked for the right reasons? πŸ€” also, gotta say, a 40-man squad is kinda excessive πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ too many cooks in the kitchen can't be good for fitness levels πŸ₯‘

😩 I'm soooo hyped for this year's Six Nations, but also kinda lowkey bummed for some of the omissions πŸ€•. Like, Cam Henderson and Gregor Hiddleston are HUGE snubs 🚫! You'd think they'd have been top picks, especially with Henderson's form last season πŸ”₯. And what's up with Hiddleston not making it? He was all over the internet last year for his hooker skills ⚑️.

I get that Townsend wants to mix things up and give some young blood a chance, but still... πŸ€”. You can't just leave out players who've been performing like champions πŸ”₯! It's gotta be tough on them, especially Hiddleston, who was probably expecting a starting spot πŸ€•.

But hey, at least the squad has a solid mix of experience and youth, right? πŸ’ͺ The guys coming in from Pro D2 will definitely shake things up πŸ”„. Can't wait to see how it all unfolds! πŸŽ‰

I'm not surprised Townsend picked Hiddleston's teammate Gray over Hiddleston himself πŸ€”. Gray's been playing really well for Bordeaux and I think it was the right call to give him another chance with the national team πŸ‰. And I get why Cherry's comeback is a big deal, he's been out for ages and you want to make sure he's ready before throwing him into the fire πŸ”₯. But still think Hiddleston should've got another nod, maybe there'll be more news on that front soon? 🀞

Wow 🀯, can't believe they're calling back some big players like Gray and Cherry, hope they can bring that experience to the team! Interesting πŸ‘€ that there's some controversy around omissions like Henderson and Hiddleston, not sure what's going on with those snubs πŸ˜•.

😊 omg what's up w/ all these omissions?? πŸ€” cam henderson & gregor hiddleston were defo expected to be in the squad... but i guess Townsend wants to give some young blood a chance? 🀞 Liam mcconnell & freddy douglas are dope prospects tho! πŸ’ͺ hope they can deliver on the pitch πŸ‘

πŸ€” so what's up with these omissions? πŸ™„ cam henderson and gregor hiddleston are both legit hookers, i get why townsend wants experience, but u gotta wonder if he's lost touch with the young guys who r bringing the heat on the pitch. πŸ”₯ especially hiddleston was on fire last season 🀯 then he gets snubbed for a 35 yr old cherry? what about rotation as townsend said? shouldnt he be giving more youth a chance? πŸ’”

πŸ‰ "The biggest risk is not taking any risk..." - Mark Zuckerberg πŸ€”

I mean think about it, they've got some experience and youth mixed together which could be a great combo for the squad. But at the same time, omissions like Cam Henderson and Gregor Hiddleston might have some people scratching their heads...πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Still, I'm sure Gregor Townsend knows what he's doing 😊

omg u guys i cant believe they left out cam henderson πŸ€” he was having an amazing season last year and hes one of the best hookers in scotland lol didnt mean to say anything bad about gregor hiddleston tho πŸ™ he's still a talented player and hopefully gets another chance soon

i do think townsend made some good calls with the squad though 🀝 he's got a mix of experience and youth which should b great for the team. josh bayliss is one of my faves 😍 and i love how they're focusing on rotation to keep the players fresh throughout the tournament that makes total sense

anyway cant wait 4 the six nations to start πŸ‰πŸ’ͺ scotland vs england at murrayfield is gonna b lit πŸ’₯

I'm lovin' this new squad announcement from Gregor Townsend! It's awesome to see some veteran players like Jonny Gray and Dave Cherry comin' back into the mix, and the youngbloods like Liam McConnell and Freddy Douglas gettin' a shot 🀩. I think Townsend is right on the money with the rotation plan - it'll be key in keepin' those players fresh for the tough matches ahead πŸ’ͺ. Can't wait to see how they do against England at Murrayfield on the 7th! πŸ‰

πŸ‰πŸ‘ so like I was thinking about this squad announcement and I'm all for the experience they're bringing together, Jonny Gray and Dave Cherry are legends! 🀩 But at the same time, I feel bad for those who didn't make the cut... Cam Henderson was having a great season last year, ugh! πŸ˜” what's going on with this rotation strategy though? seems like it could be a game changer for maintaining fitness levels. also love that they're bringing in young talent like Liam McConnell and Freddy Douglas 🀩 can't wait to see them in action! πŸ‘Š

You know what's wild? I just saw this video of a sloth taking its first steps outside its enclosure and it's literally the most adorable thing ever πŸ»πŸ˜‚. And then I started thinking about how slow the Six Nations is going to be, especially with all these injuries... but you know who's not going to get injured? The sloths in this video! They're just chillin', living their best lives. Anyway, back to Scotland - I hope they can pull off a good tournament, but let's be real, the sloths have my money on them πŸ˜‚πŸ».

πŸ‰ I think Townsend's decision is gonna be super interesting to watch unfold. Some people are saying he's gone too young and not experienced enough, but at the same time, it's great to see new talent getting a chance. Liam McConnell and Freddy Douglas are both super exciting players to watch, especially if they can make an impact in their first few games. 🀞 The team is looking pretty balanced, with a mix of old-school Scotland players like Gray and Cherry alongside younger guys who've come up through the ranks. We'll have to see how it all plays out, but I'm definitely hyped for the Six Nations now! πŸ˜ƒ

I think it's pretty interesting that Gregor Townsend is opting for experience over youth in the squad πŸ€”. I mean, don't get me wrong, the young guns like Liam McConnell and Freddy Douglas are gonna be superstars one day, but you gotta consider the bigger picture here. It's like the difference between a "build it now" approach vs a "future-proofing" approach, ya know? They're choosing to go with the tried-and-true veterans who've already done it at this level πŸ†.

And what about the whole thing with Cam Henderson and Gregor Hiddleston getting left off the squad? It's like they're trying to send a message that youth is being sacrificed for experience πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, Townsend says it's because of injuries, but let's be real, there's gotta be some politics at play here too πŸ’Έ.

It's also got me thinking about how this all relates to the whole " investment in rugby" debate 🏈. Is Scotland really putting enough resources into developing their young players? Or are they just throwing good money after bad with these veteran signings? πŸ€‘ We'll have to wait and see how it all plays out, but one thing's for sure - this is gonna be a wild ride! πŸš‚
