Sentimental Value sweeps up at European Film Awards

European Film Awards: Trier's 'Sentimental Value' Sweeps Up the Prizes

In a night dominated by one film, Norwegian director Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value took home all five top prizes at the European Film Awards in Berlin. This year's EFA ceremony, held for the first time in January instead of December, aimed to assert its independence from the US awards season.

Trier's emotional drama about an aging filmmaker trying to recruit his estranged daughter won over both critics and audiences alike. Stellan Skarsgård took home the award for Best Actor, while Renate Reinsve received the prize for Best Actress. The film also claimed the Best Screenplay award, with Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier sharing the honor.

The composer of Sentimental Value's critically acclaimed score was Hania Rani. In contrast to this dominant performance, other filmmakers fared less well. For example, Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident went home empty-handed after being nominated in three categories.

Despite the dominance of one film, cultural diversity remains a key aspect of European cinema. This year's ceremony also included several awards for emerging directors, with Laura Carreira's On Falling winning the Discovery Prize for its gripping first feature.

The award for Best Documentary went to Igor Bezinović's Fiume o Morte!, which featured re-enactments and reinterpretations by local people in his hometown of Rijeka. The EFA also honored several international co-productions, including Alice Rohrwacher with the Achievement in World Cinema Award.

I'M SO GLAD TO SEE JOACHIM TRIER GETTING THE RECOGNITION HE DESERVES FOR SENTIMENTAL VALUE!!! 😍 THIS MOVIE IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PORTRAYAL OF FAMILY AND MENTAL HEALTH, AND STELLAN SKARSGÅRD'S PERFORMANCE WAS ABSOLUTELY NAILING. 🎬 RENATE REINSVE WAS ALSO AMAZING IN HER ROLE AS THE DAUGHTER, IT WAS SO HEARTBREAKING TO WATCH THEIR RELATIONSHIP UNFOLD ON SCREEN.

I LOVE THAT THE EFA'S DECISION TO CHANGE UP THE SCHEDULE THIS YEAR WAS A WAY TO PUT EUROPEAN CINEMA FRONT AND CENTER. 💡 IT SHOWS THAT WE'RE TAKING CONTROL OF OUR OWN AWARDS SEASON AND CELEBRATING OUR OWN UNIQUE STORIES.

OF COURSE, NOT EVERYTHING WENT AS PLANNED THIS YEAR, BUT I'M SO GRATEFUL FOR THE AWARD GOING TO LAURA CARREIRA FOR ON FALLING. 💖 HER MOVIE LOOKED SO POWERFUL AND EMOTIONAL, AND IT'S WONDERFUL THAT WE'RE HELPING OUT NEW DIRECTORS LIKE HER.

AND FINALLY, I THINK IT'S AMAZING THAT THE EFA IS GIVING AWARDS TO DOCUMENTARIES AND WORLD CINEMA PROJECTS LIKE FUMEE O MORTÉ! 🌎 THESE TYPES OF FILMS ARE SO IMPORTANT FOR SHOWCASING CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND GIVE US A CHANCE TO LEARN FROM AND APPRECIATE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES.

🤔 I mean, think about it... a single film dominating the awards, while others struggle to make an impact? It makes me wonder if our attention span as consumers has become too short for anything that doesn't scream "blockbuster". On one hand, it's great to see Sentimental Value getting the recognition it deserves. But on the other hand, what about all those other films and stories out there waiting to be told? 🎥👀 It feels like we're valuing spectacle over substance. And that's where I think European cinema can get lost in translation... or should I say, in the noise of the global film industry 🌍💭

aww man i'm so happy for joachim trier & stellan skarsgård 🙌🏼🎥 they totally deserved it! sentimental value is such a beautiful film, and it's amazing that it resonated with both critics & audiences alike ❤️. it's also great to see more awards going towards emerging directors like laura carreira - the future of cinema looks bright 🌞✨

omg i'm so stoked that sentimental value swept up all those efa prizes!!! 🤩 it's amazing to see how joachim trier's emotional drama resonated with everyone who watched it - from critics to regular folks like us. and can we talk about the cast? stellan skarsgard is just perfection as always 😍, and reneate reinsve's performance was so raw and honest it gave me chills 💀. i love how efa is trying to break away from the usual awards season vibes and doing its own thing in january 🤗. and yay for emerging directors like laura carreira and her discovery prize win!!! 🎉 i'm definitely adding on falling to my watchlist now

🌃 I'm lovin' how European Film Awards is tryin' to shake off that whole US awards season vibe! Holdin' its own ceremony in January is a great move 📆💫, and it's awesome to see Trier's 'Sentimental Value' gettin' all the love 🤩. Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve are total rockstars for their performances, and I'm also feelin' that Hania Rani's score was pure magic ✨.

It's a bummer that other filmmakers didn't fare as well 🤕, but it's still awesome to see emerging directors gettin' recognition with Laura Carreira's On Falling win 🎉. And those documentary and world cinema awards are always so inspiring 🌟, like Igor Bezinović's Fiume o Morte! and Alice Rohrwacher's achievement is just the best 💖.

The European Film Awards just keep on showin' us that diversity is still key in Euro cinema 🌈. It's all about supportin' each other and celebratin' those unique stories and perspectives 💕.

🐈😱 I cant even imagine one film sweeping up all the prizes at a major award ceremony like this... Sentimental Value sounds so emotional and powerful! 🤯 Stellan Skarsgård's win for Best Actor is amazing, he's such an talented actor. And what's with the change in date from December to January? Does anyone think it'll make a difference to how awards are perceived? 📆 I'm glad they still gave out prizes for emerging directors and international co-productions tho! 🎉 It's always good to see more diverse voices being recognized. 💡

omg u no!!1!! 🤯 european film awards was all about joachim trier's sentimental value 4eva!! 😍 it took home like, ALL THE PRIZES 🏆🎉 and i am low-key impressed lol. stellan skarsgard won best actor and reneate reinves got best actress - they both brought the feels 💔. cant say im surprised tho, cuz trier's film was already getting so much hype online before efa ceremony even happened 🤩.

anywayz, its dope 2 see efa still celebratin diversity in european cinema 🌎, even if one film kinda dominated the night lol. they also gave out some sick awards to emerging directors - laura carreira's on falling was lit 💥! and fiume o morte by igor bezinovic was really cool 2 see how he incorporated local ppl in his doc 🎬. efa still doin its thang 🙌.

awww man... it sounds like 'Sentimental Value' really touched a lot of hearts 🤗 this film's success is truly beautiful - all that hard work and dedication paying off for Joachim Trier & Stellan Skarsgård, they totally deserve the awards 🎉. it's amazing how one film can sweep up so many prizes, but at the same time, it's great to see other filmmakers getting recognition too 🙌 like Laura Carreira with 'On Falling', that sounds like such a powerful & inspiring story 💖. and yay for cultural diversity, it's so important to celebrate all the amazing stories from around Europe 🎉

I'm loving how much Sentimental Value took home at the European Film Awards 🎥👏! I mean, 5 top prizes is no joke! Joachim Trier's emotional drama really resonated with both critics and audiences, and it's awesome to see Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve taking home awards for their incredible performances 🙌.

But what really caught my attention was the fact that the ceremony still celebrated cultural diversity in European cinema 🌎. It's heartwarming to see emerging directors like Laura Carreira getting recognition for her gripping first feature, On Falling 🎬. And it's cool that they honored international co-productions too - it shows how the EFA values collaboration and creativity across borders 🤝.

I also appreciated how the ceremony stood out from the US awards season by moving to January instead of December 📆. It's a great way for the EFA to assert its independence and show that European cinema is just as important and worthy of recognition 🎥👏

idk how they managed to make it feel like every award was about that one film Sentimental Value 🤔♂️... i mean, don't get me wrong, it's a great movie and all but come on, five top prizes? that's just not fair to the other nominees 🎥. and what's up with the whole January ceremony thing? feels like they're trying too hard to be different from those US awards 😒. at least give us some diversity in winners, you know? 🤷‍♂️

omg that's amazing 🤩 Trier's film is like so emotional it's giving me all the feels 🤧 and Stellan Skarsgård's acting skills are insane he totally deserved that Best Actor award 😎 Renate Reinsve too tho, she was really good in that film 👍 Eskil Vogt & Joachim Trier, what a team working on that screenplay is pure magic ✨ Hania Rani's score is so catchy I'm loving it 🎵 and It Was Just an Accident got snubbed 😔 Jafar Panahi's still doing his thing tho 💯 Laura Carreira's On Falling sounds so inspiring 🤩 can't wait to see more from her

man this joachim trier guy is like a god of cinema lol 😂 he's got 5 awards and everyone's raving about his film 🤩 sentimental value is def one of the best films i saw all year, stellan skarsgård's performance was insane 🎬 but what i loved most was how he collaborated with eskil vogt on the screenplay 📝 it just goes to show that european cinema is still all about collaboration and diversity 🌈 and yeah, it's great to see emerging directors like laura carreira getting recognition 💖 on falling was such a gripping film, can't wait to see what they do next! 🎥

OMG, I'm so stoked for Joachim Trier's film, Sentimental Value 🎥! Five top prizes is insane, I mean, you can tell it really resonated with people on a deeper level. Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve killed their performances, if I do say so myself 😍. The fact that the ceremony was held in January instead of December was a great move, gives me hope for more flexibility in the awards season 🤞. It's awesome to see emerging directors getting recognition too, like Laura Carreira with On Falling, she's got some serious talent 💫!

I'm so stoked for Joachim Trier and Stellan Skarsgård on that award win 🤩🎥! Sentimental Value is such a beautiful film, it really tugs at your heartstrings 💔. I love how the EFA ceremony has been shaking things up by moving to January instead of December, it's all about giving those indie filmmakers more time in the spotlight 🔦.

I've seen some reviews saying that Trier's film might have overshadowed others, but I think that's kinda the point - sometimes one amazing piece of art takes center stage 🌟. Plus, there are so many talented filmmakers out there doing incredible work, and it's awesome to see the EFA recognizing emerging directors like Laura Carreira with her Discovery Prize 🎉.

That documentary Fiume o Morte! sounds really cool too - I love how they incorporated re-enactments by locals in Rijeka 👥. It just goes to show that there's so much richness and diversity in European cinema, and we should be celebrating all sorts of voices and perspectives 🌈.

Just saw that Norwegian director Joachim Trier is low-key a genius 🤯, I mean, five top prizes for one film? Sentimental Value is definitely giving me all the feels 😭, and Stellan Skarsgård's performance as an aging filmmaker trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter? Chills every time 🎥. And can we talk about Hania Rani's score? The way it complements the emotional depth of the film? Pure magic ✨. But I'm also loving that EFA is giving a shoutout to emerging directors like Laura Carreira for On Falling 🌟. European cinema is all about celebrating diversity and new talent, right? 👏

😊 This year's European Film Awards were pretty much a one-film show, but I think that's actually kind of cool? I mean, it's not often you see a film sweep up all five top prizes. Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value is just so good, you know? Stellan Skarsgård was amazing in it too 🤩. It's great to see some diversity in the winners this year though - I love that they recognized emerging directors like Laura Carreira for her first feature film On Falling 💖. And can we talk about Hania Rani's score, though? It's just so evocative and emotional... anyway, it's always awesome to see international filmmakers getting their due recognition 🎥💫

OMG u guys!!! 😍 Trier's 'Sentimental Value' is EVERYTHING right now!! 💖 I mean, 5 top prizes at the European Film Awards?!?! 🤯 Joachim Trier is a genius and Stellan Skarsgård's acting skills are on point 🎬! And Renate Reinsve's performance as his daughter is giving me all the feels 😭. I'm so glad that the EFA's still trying to promote European cinema and support emerging directors 💖. Laura Carreira's 'On Falling' is a must-watch! 📺 Can't wait for 'Sentimental Value' to come out on Netflix already! 🎥💫

The fact checker is thinking 🤔... I think it's pretty cool that one film swept up all the top prizes at the European Film Awards! It sounds like Sentimental Value really resonated with everyone who watched it - Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve were both amazing in their roles. But, I have to wonder, did the EFA ceremony make a big enough splash by moving from December to January? Like, was that change necessary for it to feel like a real alternative to the US awards season? And how did everyone feel about all the emerging directors who got recognized this year? Laura Carreira's On Falling sounds super exciting! 🎥

I THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY COOL HOW JOACHIM TRIER'S MOVIE TOOK EVERYTHING AT THE EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS!!! IT JUST SHOWED US THAT WITH GREAT STORYTELLING COMES GREAT REWARD 🎥💫 AND I LOVE SEEING EMERGING DIRECTORS LIKE LAURA CARRIERA WINNING AWARDS FOR THEIR HARD WORK, ON FALLING WAS SUCH A POWERFUL MOVIE! 🌊
