A shooting at a busy California shopping mall on what's supposed to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year, has left two people wounded and prompted an evacuation of the mall during Black Friday.
San Jose police confirmed that the incident was isolated and there were no further threats to public safety. However, as a precautionary measure, officers evacuated and cleared Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara, a popular destination for holiday shopping just outside of San Francisco.
The two victims were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, and witnesses described chaotic scenes as police quickly secured the area.
For many, Black Friday marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, with lines of shoppers waiting hours before stores open. But on this particular day in Santa Clara, the excitement was replaced by fear as a shooting sent ripples through the crowded mall.
The San Jose Police Department said they received reports of gunfire at around 3:00 PM local time and immediately sprang into action to evacuate and secure the area. The police department reported that there were no further threats or incidents at the scene.
The incident has raised questions about how such an isolated incident could occur on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and what measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As shoppers scrambled to find deals and gifts for loved ones, many couldn't help but feel shaken by the sudden and unexpected violence.
