Six Nations 2026 analysis: John Barclay on Gregor Townsend future

Scotland's Six Nations hopes are hanging by a thread, and former captain John Barclay believes the very future of Gregor Townsend hangs in the balance. If Scotland fails to secure one of the top three spots at the Six Nations, the Scotland head coach is at risk of losing his job, according to Barclay.

Townsend has been under intense scrutiny following two consecutive losses to Italy and France, respectively. The former Scotland captain believes that a disappointing finish to the tournament would be a clear indication that Townsend needs to go.

"This season has shown me that I'm not sure if Gregor is the man to take us forward," Barclay said in an interview. "We've seen some of the worst performances from our team, and you can't just blame the players for that. As the head coach, it's your job to get them ready for those big games, and we're not seeing that right now."

Barclay also expressed concern over Townsend's tactics, which he believes have been inconsistent and have often left Scotland vulnerable to counter-attacks.

"I think Gregor needs to take a hard look at his game plan," Barclay said. "We've been given some tough assignments in the Six Nations, but we haven't been able to execute them like we should be. That's not just on the players; it's also on the coach. He needs to make sure that our team is equipped to handle those situations."

Townsend has been under pressure all season, with many questioning his ability to lead Scotland to success in the Six Nations. However, he remains a popular figure among fans and pundits alike, who believe he has the talent and experience to turn things around.

Despite Barclay's concerns, Townsend insists that he will not be intimidated by criticism and is committed to seeing out the rest of the season.

"I understand where John is coming from," Townsend said. "But I think we've shown some positives this season, especially in our performances against Italy and France. We're working hard to get it right, and I'm confident that we can finish the tournament strongly."

The question now remains: can Scotland pull off a miracle and secure a top-three spot? If not, will Townsend's job be on the line? Only time will tell.

Umm... idk... 🤔 I mean, I think Gregor Townsend has some good points, but at the same time, he is our coach and we need to support him 🙏... I'm not sure if John Barclay's comments are fair, maybe they're just coming from a place of frustration... 🤷‍♂️ But on the other hand, Scotland needs to step up their game if they wanna have any chance at beating Italy and France again 🚫... Townsend seems like a good coach, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out 💭

🤔 Scotland's rugby team is in a sticky situation and it's gotta be Gregor Townsend who takes the fall 😬 I mean, they just got destroyed by Italy and France back to back... that's like getting beat by the same 2 teams twice in a row and you're still thinking the same old game plan is gonna work 💡 Newsflash, coach: it ain't! 🚫 Barclay is right on point though - as the head coach, Townsend needs to get his team ready for those big games and stop being all over the place with his tactics 😬 And yeah, if they can't pull off a top-three spot, I think Townsend's job is toast 💀 Can't save everyone, right? 🤷‍♂️

aww mate, gotta feel for Townsend 🤕 he's under so much pressure right now, but at the same time, it's like he needs to prove himself too 🤔 Barclay's got some legit concerns tho, their tactics have been all over the place and they're just not executing well ⚽️ what I love about this is that it's making people passionate about the team again, whether you're a fan or a pundit 😊 but seriously, if Scotland can't get it together, it might be hard for Townsend to keep his job 🤞 maybe he needs some fresh blood or a change in strategy? only time will tell, and I'll be glued to my screen during the next match 📺🏉

I gotta say, this whole thing with Gregor Townsend is super sus 😒. Like, I get it, two losses in a row are no joke, but does he really need to lose his job over that? It seems like Barclay's just trying to stir the pot here 🤔. I mean, have you seen the other teams' performances this season? They're not exactly setting the world on fire either 😂. And let's be real, Townsend has a rep for being one of the most experienced coaches out there - he knows his stuff 💯. It's just a matter of time before things turn around, right? 🤞

I'm getting these feels like when Scotland was still part of the Home Nations 🤔... back then they were always so consistent, but never really stood out as a top team. I mean, John Barclay was right, their performances have been pretty subpar this season, and it's not just about the players, it's on Townsend to get them ready for those big games.

I'm thinking of when Paul O'Grady used to commentate on Scottish rugby... he'd always be so optimistic, but also honest. He knew what was wrong with the team, and he'd tell it like it is. I wish Scotland had someone like that now 🤷‍♂️. It's not just about Townsend's job, though; it's about the team's chances of success. Can they really pull off a miracle? 🙏

I remember watching the 1999 Rugby World Cup 📺... Scotland made it to the semis, but then lost to Australia. I think that was one of the most disappointing results in Scottish rugby history 😔. If Townsend loses his job, it'll be a huge blow to the team's morale. Fingers crossed they can turn things around and make it to the top three 🤞
