Chicago Sky Get Most Likely Outcome in WNBA Draft Lottery, But Work Remains Ahead.
The Chicago Sky took the most likely outcome from Sunday night's WNBA draft lottery – the No. 5 pick. The Dallas Wings got their first overall pick as they did last year, when they selected All-WNBA guard Paige Bueckers with the top pick.
The top spot is currently uncertain due to differing opinions on the top prospect this time around. Spain’s Awa Fam and TCU point guard Olivia Miles are expected to be snagged early but it remains to be seen how high up the draft board they will end up.
Still, the Sky have some excellent possibilities at No. 5. They could grab LSU's Flau’jae Johnson or South Carolina's Ta'Niya Latson, both of whom can contribute on the perimeter.
On another note, the Sky are dealing with the consequences of a trade made last year, which has come due. The deal allowed them to pick Angel Reese but also cost them their 2026 first-round pick – which now goes to No. 2.
The Dallas Wings' success comes at a price for other teams as they add yet another top prospect.
In addition to their fifth overall pick, the Sky have three second-round picks and plan to bring back Slovenian forward Ajsa Sivka from last year’s draft.
This season is going to be a challenging one for the Sky as they've experienced two consecutive losing seasons – 23-61 over the past couple of years. Their future rests on their 2024 draft duo, Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.
The team hopes that Courtney Vandersloot's return from her ACL injury will be able to unlock their young bigs and improve overall performance. However, shoring up a defense that ranked among the worst last season is going to require significant work.
