Some fans whistle as Lionel Messi’s name is announced as Paris Saint-Germain’s season hits new low | CNN

Paris Saint-Germain's Struggling Season Takes a Turn for the Worse

The French giants' home defeat to Lyon has cast a shadow over their already underwhelming campaign. The 1-0 loss was the second straight setback for PSG, with the team's morale seeming to plummet alongside it.

Even before kickoff, the tension was palpable as some fans expressed their frustration towards Lionel Messi, whose name elicited a chorus of whistles from the crowd upon announcement as the starting lineup revealed itself. This isn't the first time that Messi has faced such reception; during his recent friendlies in Argentina, some fans showed appreciation for the legendary forward's return.

Despite having the talented Messi on board, PSG continues to struggle at home, with the team rarely appearing threatening enough to challenge the visiting goal. Even a late Bradley Barcola goal in the second period wasn't enough to salvage the result, as Lyon held out for a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

The loss has moved both Lens and Marseille into striking distance of PSG at the top of Ligue 1, with their teams now just six points behind. The domestic title looks increasingly uncertain, raising questions about whether Messi's arrival was the missing piece that would help PSG finally win the Champions League – a trophy they've long coveted.

Coach Christophe Galtier refused to single out Messi for blame, citing his inability to unlock difficult situations and pointing to the importance of the other players doing their jobs. Galtier also made it clear that the team can't rely on just two players to deliver results, highlighting the need for collective effort if PSG is to have any hope of salvaging the season.

With a crucial week ahead, PSG's next match against an unbeaten Nice side will be a make-or-break test of their resolve. With the pressure mounting and losses piling up, the question on everyone's lips is: can this team turn things around?

I'm feeling really down about PSG right now 🤕... I mean, they've got one of the most iconic players in history on their side, but it feels like Messi's still trying to prove himself all over again. It's like he's carrying the weight of the team on his shoulders alone. And it's not just about him, either - the whole squad seems to be struggling with a lack of cohesion and communication 🤝.

I keep thinking about how we put pressure on our idols to perform at their best, but what if they're only doing okay because they have to? What if the burden of expectation is crushing them? It's like we're asking Messi to be a superhero, rather than just allowing him to be a great player 🦸‍♂️.

And it makes me wonder, are we really so focused on individual glory that we forget about the team as a whole? Is it really possible for PSG to turn things around if they can't even rely on their own players to do their jobs? It's like they're stuck in this perpetual state of limbo, where they're always just one step behind 🌀.

idk what's goin on with PSG rn lol they're supposed 2 b the best team in france but theyre havin a super bad season 🤔😕 PSGs morale is really low af after dat loss to lyon and now marseille & lenss are closin in on them 👀👊 does messi's presence make any diff lol 😂 i think galtier hit the nail on the head tho, u cant rely on just 1 or 2 players 2 carry the team through 🤝 https://www.bbc.com/news/sport-59744192 💬

I don't get what the fuss is about. PSG has been struggling for ages now, but Messi just showed up! 🤔 I mean, I love the guy as a player, no doubt about it, but come on, one loss doesn't make him the reason they're not winning. They've got other talented players too, like Neymar and Mbappé... where's the effort being put in to get them playing well together? 🤷‍♂️ Galtier's all right, I guess, but it's time to step up the squad performance or sit Messi on the bench for a bit. The pressure is on, and if they can't turn things around soon, we'll be seeing another season in the Champions League's "what ifs". 😬

omg I'm literally dying over here PSGs season just went from bad to worse like what even is happening 🤯! I mean I get it they're under pressure to perform but come on guys u gotta step up ur game now!! especially with Messi on board he's supposed to be the magic man 🔮, but he can't do it alone he needs his teammates to support him 💪.

and bradley barcola's goal was literally the only reason they didn't lose by 3 or more 🤦‍♂️ Lyon just held out and PSG had a meltdown 😭. I'm so done with this team I don't even know if I wanna watch them anymore 😴 it's like they're just going through the motions now.

Lens and Marseille are closing in on them and I wouldn't be surprised if they end up losing the league title 🏆, which would be a total shame considering how much hype they've built around Messi 💥. I mean what was that supposed to fix?! 😂 anywayz I'll be watching the next match against Nice with bated breath lol

I feel so bad for Messi, he deserves so much better than this 😔. I mean, the guy has been carrying teams to wins for years, and now it seems like no one expects him to do anything special. It's not all his fault, though - PSG needs a cohesive team effort, and right now they just seem disjointed 🤦‍♂️. I'm starting to wonder if Messi's arrival is the catalyst for change or just another temporary fix... time will tell ⏰.

🤔 I think the pressure on Messi is getting too much for him to handle right now. He's an incredible player, but you can't put all your hopes on one guy. PSG needs to work on building a more cohesive unit and trusting their teammates to do their part. 🔄

Lyon's win was well-deserved, and it shows that they're starting to find their footing in the league. 😐 On the other hand, Nice is looking fierce this season, so it's going to be tough for PSG to bounce back from this defeat.

PSG's struggles at home are a concern, but I don't think Messi being on board is the sole reason. The team needs to figure out how to create more scoring opportunities and defend better as a unit. 💡

omg u guyz, psgr s really strugglin rn lol they cant even beat lyon @ home wthout all the drama wit messi whistlerz 🤦‍♂️👀 its not just 1 match but 2 straight losses n ppl r gettin worried 😬 lens & marseille r closin in on psgr n da title looks 2 b disputed 🏆🤔 i think coach galtier's got a point tho, we cant put all hopes on messi 2 deliver results every time 💪 gotta work as a team 4 them 2 get back 2 form 🔄 let's see if psgr can turn it around w/ dat nice match coming up 🏟️⚽

PSG is having a super bad season 🤕... they're literally 6 points behind Lens & Marseille in Ligue 1 😱. Messi's been expected to save them, but so far, not looking like that 😔. PSG's home record is pretty pathetic, they've lost 2 straight matches and morale is down ⬇️. Galtier's saying it's a team effort, but it's hard to see how 💭... they need to win big against Nice this week or all hope is lost 🤞. That Messi fan whistling incident was just the cherry on top 🎉😒. PSG's title hopes are slipping away fast ⏱️... 5th place might be a more realistic goal now 🤦‍♂️

omg can u believe this?? 🤯 PSG is literally tanking right now and it's all because they cant get their act together at home 😒 messi is tryin to carry them but even he cant do it alone 💔 coach galtier needs to step in and give the players some much needed motivation 💪 they need a total team overhaul if they wanna make a comeback 🔥 and honestly, i think we all know that gonna be easier said than done 😅

😡👎 PSG is literally falling apart and it's all because of Messi's 'inability' to perform when it matters most 🤦‍♂️. I mean, come on guys! If you're gonna bring in a legend like that, you should be seeing some results, not getting beat by teams like Lyon at home ⚽️. And now Lens and Marseille are breathing down their necks? 🙄 It's time for some serious changes behind the bench, Galtier needs to step up his game 👊 or else we're gonna see a complete collapse of this team 💥.

😬 "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." 💔 When you think about it, PSG has been doing everything but nothing, and now they're facing the music. It's time for them to step up their game and work together as a team. 🤝

I'm so bummed for PSG fans right now 🤕 They're really struggling to get out of this slump, and with Messi's name coming in for criticism from some fans, it's like a double whammy. I mean, we all know he's got some amazing skills on the field, but even top players have bad games sometimes.

The thing that's really bothering me is how PSG just can't seem to string together a solid performance at home 🏠. They're getting beat by teams they should be able to take down, and it's like their whole season is hanging in the balance. And with Lens and Marseille breathing down their necks, you've got to wonder if this team has what it takes to win it all.

Coach Galtier's right, though - this can't just come down to two players doing their thing 🤝. Everyone on that team needs to be pulling in the same direction if they want to make a push for the top spot. It's going to be tough, but I've got faith that they'll find a way to turn it around... or at least give us some thrilling games to watch 😅
