Campbell's Soup Giant Faces Backlash Over Alleged Racist Comments by Former Executive
The well-known soup company Campbell's is facing a crisis after it dismissed a high-ranking executive accused of making racist and derogatory comments about the company's products and its Indian employees. Martin Bally, who was the vice-president of the company's IT department, was recorded saying that Campbell's soups are made for "poor people" and denigrating his own ethnic group.
According to a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by former security analyst Robert Garza, who allegedly overheard Bally making these comments in 2018. In an hour-long rant, Bally also made light of the health benefits of Campbell's products, stating that "bioengineered meat" is used and that he wouldn't eat such chicken.
The lawsuit claims that Bally went on to attack the intelligence of Indian employees at the company, saying that they couldn't think for themselves. When Garza tried to discuss his salary with Bally, who was under the influence of drugs, he allegedly retaliated against him after he made a complaint about Bally's behavior.
Campbell's has since apologized for the comments, which it described as "vulgar and false". The company has dismissed Bally from his position and stated that this type of language is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in any circumstances.
However, Campbell's has pushed back on one of the allegations made against them - that their chicken soup contains bioengineered meat. The company claims that all their soups are made with no antibiotics ever chicken meat and denies making such claims as "absurd".
The incident highlights the need for greater accountability among corporate leaders and the importance of creating a more inclusive workplace culture.
