Sports - AFCON 2025: Clash of the fallen giants as Egypt Face Nigeria

Egypt and Nigeria are set to face off in a highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations third-place playoff showdown, with both teams eager to salvage some pride from an otherwise disappointing tournament. The stakes are high as these two African giants collide at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca on Saturday.

The encounter is being seen as a battle for bragging rights, with both Egypt and Nigeria having fallen short of their championship aspirations. A victory for either side would provide a sense of redemption and a chance to end the tournament on a high note.

In contrast, the African continent was treated to an electrifying display in Ligue 1 last night as Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Lille at the Parc des Princes. Ousmane Dembélé's double strike inspired PSG to provisional top spot ahead of Saturday's Lens-Auxerre clash.

Monaco's struggles continue, with the Monegasque side suffering their fourth straight league defeat in a 3-1 home loss to Lorient. Meanwhile, Manchester City and Manchester United are set for a high-stakes derby at Old Trafford, while Arsenal travel to Nottingham Forest to pile pressure on the league leaders.

Real Madrid will need to respond from their shock Copa del Rey exit, which saw them lose 3-2 to Albacete in a second-division team's surprise upset. The Spanish giants face off against Levante on Saturday, with victory crucial for maintaining their competitive edge.

In the EuroLeague, Real Madrid made significant strides by cruising past Barcelona 80-61, leapfrogging their rivals in the standings and signaling their intent to dominate the competition.

The Africa Cup of Nations is all about redemption right now 🤔😬 I think both Egypt and Nigeria will give it their all in that third-place playoff match. It's not just about bragging rights, but also about salvaging some dignity after a disappointing tournament. I'm rooting for either team to pull off an upset and show the continent what they're really capable of 🤞💪

I'm kinda bummed that Egypt and Nigeria aren't doing well in the Africa Cup of Nations 🤔. I mean, they're both supposed to be like the top teams or something, but it looks like they got caught out by better opponents. It's like, you wanna win a tournament and have some bragging rights, right? So yeah, this third-place playoff thing is kinda big deal for them. On the other hand, I'm loving PSG's dominance in Ligue 1 💪 - that Ousmane Dembélé guy is a beast! And it's not all bad news for Monaco... just need 'em to turn their season around ASAP 🤞

ugh I cant even right now thinking about all this football drama 🤦‍♂️ first africa cup of nations is almost over already its like what happened to all the excitement & hype I was really hoping for a stronger showing from some african teams especially nigeria they had so much promise last time around and now theyre facing dembélé's psg vs arsenal in the league sounds like another thrilling derby 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I'm still trying to process what happened in the Africa Cup of Nations. I mean, Egypt and Nigeria both had such great squads, but just didn't click when it mattered most 🤷‍♂️. It's gonna be tough for either team to take that W and look back on this tournament with any real pride 😔. But hey, at least the continent is still putting on a show in the Ligue 1 – PSG is looking fierce right now 🔥! And those Manchester derbies? Always good for some excitement ⚽️. Real Madrid's Copa del Rey exit was a shock, but I guess you can't win 'em all 😬. Still rooting for them to get back on track against Levante 💪.

Ugh, I'm so over this Africa Cup of Nations already... Egypt vs Nigeria is gonna be a total snooze fest, both teams are rubbish and it's just a waste of time. Like, who even cares about third-place playoff? The real problem here is the whole tournament was a mess from start to finish 🙄.

And don't even get me started on PSG's double strike... yeah right, they're probably gonna choke under pressure like they always do. Monaco can't even take care of themselves at home, what makes them think they can beat anyone else? And Manchester City and United are both so overhyped, it's just a derby for the sake of being a derby.

Real Madrid got upset by a second-division team... that's not exactly confidence-inspiring. And now they're all hyped about beating Levante? Please, they're like a broken record at this point. The only thing that matters is the league standings right now 🤑

Ugh, third-place playoff games are just so lame 🤦‍♂️. Can't these teams just play a normal tournament without having to settle for "third place"? It's like they're being treated as junior leagues or something 🙄. And Casablanca on Saturday? Isn't that just going to be a huge, crowded stadium with subpar sound quality? Not exactly the most exciting atmosphere... 😒

And while I get it, these teams want some pride back, can't they just take pride in competing against each other instead of needing a "third place" game to do so? 🤔

I'm low-key hyped for this Africa Cup of Nations third-place playoff match between Egypt and Nigeria! It's gonna be a clash of titans 🦅💪, and I love how both teams are riding or dying on their chances of redemption 😬. PSG is absolutely destroying Ligue 1 right now 🔥👏, and I'm rooting for them to keep up the momentum. Monaco's struggles are no surprise, though - they've been having a rough patch 🤕.

The Manchester derby is gonna be insane ⚽️, with City and United going head-to-head at Old Trafford! And Real Madrid needs to bounce back from that shock Copa del Rey exit ASAP 💥. The EuroLeague is getting more intense by the day, and Real Madrid's win over Barcelona was a major statement 🎯👑. Who do you think will come out on top?

I'm not sure why teams can't just show up to the Africa Cup of Nations ready to give it a go instead of making a whole tournament about saving face 😂. It's like they're all waiting for someone else to get knocked out so they can just coast into 3rd place. Anyways, I think PSG is gonna dominate Ligue 1 and then take on Lens in the derby match... that's gonna be lit 🔥!

Ugh man, can't believe how far football has fallen 😒... I mean, what's with all these crazy VAR calls 🤯? In my day, we didn't need robots to tell us if a goal was legit or not 🙄. And don't even get me started on the transfer fees 💸. I remember when players could just move for pennies compared to what they're raking it in nowadays 🤑. But hey, at least the Africa Cup of Nations is still bringing the drama ⚽️... Nigeria vs Egypt is gonna be a wild one! 😂

Ugh, I'm so done with this Africa Cup of Nations thing... I mean what's the point of even having a third-place playoff match? It's just gonna be some teams playing each other while the real African football heroes are over in Europe getting their lives together. PSG is killing it right now and Real Madrid's comeback from that Copa del Rey loss was pure magic 🔮💫. But seriously, can we please focus on the bigger picture here? Like, what's next for these teams after this tournament? I need some real football drama in my life 😩. And btw, Nigeria vs Egypt is gonna be a battle for ages, both teams are so hungry for that third-place spot... it's gonna be intense 🤯🏆

Meh, just another Africa Cup of Nations wrap-up 🤷‍♂️. Think Egypt & Nigeria should've done better, but I guess pride's still on the line 💔. On a lighter note, PSG looks like a beast in Ligue 1 right now! 😏 Can't wait to see how Manchester City vs United goes down ⚽️. And poor Monaco 🤕...

idk why africa cup of nations is always so overhyped 🤷‍♂️ it's always gonna be a bunch of teams that aren't exactly top tier europe clubs playing against each other. i mean don't get me wrong, nigeria and egypt are both amazing countries with awesome sports scenes but let's not forget they're still leagues behind europa's best teams 💪 meanwhile, watching ligue 1 games is like a whole different level of entertainment lol dembélé's goal is gonna be on highlight reels for ages 📺

OMG, I just watched that PSG game last night 🤩😍 Ousmane Dembélé is literally on fire! But, umm, back to this Africa Cup of Nations thing... why do these teams have to play each other again? Can't they just, like, share the bronze medal or something? 😂 And, seriously, what's with all the drama between Egypt and Nigeria? Are there, like, old grudges or something? 🤔

And, wait, so Real Madrid lost in the Copa del Rey... that's kinda sad for them 🤕. But, on the bright side, they're gonna face Levante and hopefully win that one to stay competitive 💪. Oh, and I'm still thinking about that PSG game... did Ousmane really score a double? How many points does he have now? 🤔

Ugh, these new football teams are so confusing 🤯! Like, who's the big deal now? In my day, we had River Plate vs Boca Junio for the Copa Libertadores 🎉. Now it's all about these tiny clubs like Albacete beating Real Madrid 😲. I mean, I get it, upsets happen, but it's just crazy to see second-division teams giving top-tier teams a run for their money 💥.

And don't even get me started on PSG and Lille 🤦‍♂️. Who knew the league in France was so competitive? Back then, we had the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid dominating everything 🔴⚽️. These new teams are bringing some excitement to the table, I guess... 😊

But what's with all these big-name teams struggling? Manchester City vs Manchester United is supposed to be a huge deal 🤔, but I'm just not feeling it. Give me a good old-fashioned derby between two Italian teams any day ⚽❤️!

omg what's gonna happen saturday? i'm hyped for that african cup of nations 3rd place match btw i think egyp and nigeria have some fire players they should give it their all 🤩💪 Egypt's Salah is still a beast on the pitch, can't wait to see him shine again 💥 Nigeria's Onyeka Okongwu is a dominant force in the paint, he's gonna cause some major problems for egyp

I think Nigeria's team is gonna bring some fire to that game against Egypt 🤯🔥 they've been struggling but I think they can turn it around and give Egypt a run for their money 💪. And btw, PSG is on 🔥 right now! I love watching Dembélé play, he's so fast and skillful 🚀.

aww man i feel bad 4 egypt & nigeria, they had such big hopes going into this tournament but didn't quite live up to them 😔 ugh, it's gonna be a tough one on sat at mohammed v stadium, whoever wins gets braggin rights tho 🏆💪 hope egypt & nig can bounce back strong from dis. btw did u catch that ligue 1 match last night? paris saint-germain is ON FIRE 🔥👊

Wow 😎, can't believe what's happening in the world of football! PSG is on fire 💥 and I'm loving every minute of it! Meanwhile, Nigeria vs Egypt is going to be a battle for the ages ⚔️... fingers crossed for both teams to get some redemption from this tournament. And omg, that Copa del Rey exit by Real Madrid 🤯? Still can't believe a 2nd division team beat them 😂!

I'm not getting too excited about this Africa Cup of Nations thingy 🤔. Both Egypt and Nigeria have had decent seasons, but I just don't see either team making a deep run in the tournament. Like, what's the point of all these playoffs, right? 🙄 It's just gonna be a bunch of teams fighting for some lame third-place prize. And don't even get me started on the European leagues... Monaco's struggles are almost impressive at this point 😂. But seriously, I do love watching PSG play - Ousmane Dembélé is a beast! 🤯
