Local Roots Fuel Steelers Center Ryan McCollum's NFL Success
Growing up in the heart of Texas has its advantages, claims Ryan McCollum, a center for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The athlete attributes his professional football career to the rich opportunities and capabilities offered by his hometown. "I think you're blessed with a lot of opportunity and capabilities," he remarks.
Mccollum's time at Klein Oak High School in Spring was pivotal in shaping his future. He became a standout athlete, earning multiple college offers out of high school. Instead of pursuing other options, the Texan opted to stay close to home and enrolled at Texas A&M, a decision driven by his admiration for legendary Texans players such as JJ Watt.
However, it was not just the team's past successes that drew Mccollum to A&M β he had also been inspired by the university's head coach, DeMeco Ryans. The player's last name was an added bonus, sparking a lifelong connection to the school. "DeMeco Ryans was actually my favorite as a kid," Mccollum reveals. "Because his last name is Ryans, so, I saw the jersey, and that's my name, so I always liked that."
Despite going undrafted, Mccollum never lost sight of his NFL ambitions. He embarked on stints with the Texans and Lions before joining the Steelers in 2022. Now, in a pivotal playoff matchup against the team he grew up supporting, Mccollum is grateful to have achieved his dream.
"It's awesome," he says. "You know, I'm extremely blessed." Five years into his NFL career, Mccollum remains thankful for the journey that has led him to this moment.
