Sydney awaits 'soggiest weekend of summer' as Victorian authorities defend flash flood warnings

Victorian authorities are defending the timing of warnings for holidaymakers along Victoria's surf coast who were hit by an unprecedented downpour on Thursday, as Sydney awaits its soggiest weekend of summer to date.

The Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines said it would be a "very wet weekend" across eastern New South Wales, with heavy showers and thunderstorms predicted for the Illawarra and Sydney districts on Saturday. This has raised concerns among residents, who are also bracing themselves for severe winds expected to make fighting bushfires in Victoria even more challenging.

However, Victorian authorities have argued that warnings were issued in a timely manner. The emergency management commissioner, Tim Wiebusch, said the first triple zero call reporting flash flooding was at 1.08pm on Thursday, and then again at 1.20pm when cars were being washed away - about 30 minutes after the Bureau of Meteorology upgraded its warning.

Despite concerns over the effectiveness of warnings, Wiebusch believed they were "adequate...and as timely as they could be". He cited an unprecedented weather event that caught everyone off guard, with heavy rain pouring down on the Wye River and Lorne causing widespread flash flooding. About 600 people were temporarily displaced due to the floods.

However, it seems that the warnings may not have reached holidaymakers in time, according to comments from Colac mayor Jason Schram, who criticized the level of warnings given to those staying in caravan parks. He stated that the city received an astonishing amount of rain - 180mm - causing damage and flooding across multiple rivers.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted significant flash flooding along the Illawarra and south coast of NSW between Thursday afternoon and Saturday night, with "disruption and delays to travel and transport" expected due to heavy rainfall. Meanwhile in Victoria, authorities are still battling large bushfires, with about 100 roads closed and over 1,000 structures damaged or destroyed.

The recent extreme weather has raised concerns about the country's vulnerability to climate change and natural disasters, according to a report from the Insurance Council of Australia. The World Meteorological Organisation has also warned that temperatures in 2025 continued its three-year streak of "extraordinary global temperatures" with surface air temperatures averaging 1.48C above preindustrial levels.

idk what's goin on w/ these warnings... seems like vic authorities are tryna cover their backs after the flood incident, but i feel for all those caught off guard in caravan parks ๐Ÿคฏ. like, how do u even warn ppl when it's a whole other level of bad weather than expected? the rain just poured down like crazy! shouldn't they've issued more clear warnings earlier tho?

๐ŸŒช๏ธ I don't get why they're defending the timing of those warnings, mate. It's like, yeah we knew it was gonna be wet and stormy on Thursday, but come on, an extra 30 minutes isn't exactly a lot of time to find shelter, you know? Those holidaymakers were literally caught off guard by flash flooding... it's just not right that they weren't given more notice. And what really gets me is how we're still dealing with bushfires and severe winds in Victoria while Sydney's bracing itself for its soggiest weekend on record ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

I think it's quite telling that the Victorian authorities are defending the timing of their warnings, given the severity of the flooding and damage caused. ๐Ÿค” The fact remains that a significant number of holidaymakers were not adequately warned, which is a concerning oversight. I mean, 180mm of rain in one city - that's just staggering! The lack of preparedness might be due to the unpredictability of the weather event, but it raises questions about the effectiveness of emergency management systems in place. We need to consider the long-term implications of climate change on our infrastructure and disaster response strategies. It's also interesting to note that this extreme weather is being predicted by multiple organizations - isn't that a wake-up call? ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿ˜• so like what's going on here? they're saying warnings were issued in time but apparently not enough people got 'em or somethin'? ๐Ÿค” i mean, 600 people gotta be displaced by floods, that's crazy! and now they're talkin' about climate change... it feels like australia's gettin' smashed by the weather and nobody knows how to stop it ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. i'm all for bein' prepared but come on, can't we just have some sunshine and normal weather for once? ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ˜’

๐ŸŒช๏ธ I dont think warnings were issued too soon, but they should be issued sooner if there was a chance of major flooding...like yesterday ๐Ÿ™„. The authorities say it was an unexpected event, but that's kinda the point of having weather alerts in place - to catch those surprises ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The fact is, 180mm of rain hit Colac in one day, that's crazy! We need better systems to warn us about impending disasters, especially when we have tourists in caravan parks who might not be aware of the risks ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ I'm like, totally confused about these weather warnings in Victoria... ๐Ÿค” I mean, isn't it kinda obvious that heavy rain and flooding are gonna happen when you have a downpour like that? ๐ŸŒง๏ธ The fact that 600 people got displaced and stuff is super concerning. But at the same time, I get why they're defending the timing of the warnings - it's not like they can control every single stormy weather event ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. It feels like the warning system was kinda slow to react? ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Maybe if more holidaymakers knew about the flooding in advance, some could've left earlier or taken precautions ๐Ÿšจ. Anyways, I hope everyone stays safe and dry over the weekend ๐Ÿ˜Š!

๐ŸŒช๏ธ just checked the weather forecast for sydney and it's looking like a total washout ๐Ÿคฃ with heavy showers and thunderstorms expected on saturday. but did you know that temps in australia are averaging 1.48c above pre-industrial levels since 2022? crazy! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ also, didn't know that 600 people were temporarily displaced due to the floods in victoria last week...that's just devastating ๐Ÿค•. and btw, the insurance council of australia says our country is getting more vulnerable to climate change with events like this happening more often ๐Ÿšจ.

๐Ÿ“Š stats time! here are some fun facts:

* australia has experienced 3 consecutive years of "extraordinary global temperatures"
* surface air temps in australia have risen by 0.8c since 1910
* the world is expected to see 1.5c above pre-industrial levels by 2050 if we don't do something about climate change ๐Ÿšฎ

๐ŸŒŠ anyways, hoping everyone stays safe and dry this weekend! โ˜๏ธ

I donโ€™t usually comment but I think itโ€™s a bit harsh to blame the authorities for not giving enough warnings ๐Ÿค”. They did issue those triple zero calls and upgrades pretty quickly, right? But seriously, 180mm of rain in Colac is no joke! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ The city just doesn't seem prepared for that kind of flooding, you know? I mean, I've lived here my whole life and even I wasnโ€™t expecting it. It's all a bit wild ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. Can we talk about climate change for a sec though? Like, how are we gonna deal with this stuff? ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ I mean, come on! Who comes up with these timing warnings? 30 minutes is not a lot of time to get your holiday plans ruined by flash flooding ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. The Bureau's warning system seems adequate, but it didn't seem to hit the caravan parks fast enough. Like, what do you expect people in Victoria to do when they're caught off guard like that? Take a detour to Melbourne or something? ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's just frustrating when you've got your whole weekend ruined by bad weather ๐Ÿค•.

Ugh, can't believe they're getting slammed for not warning tourists early enough ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. Like, who doesn't know when it's gonna rain that hard? ๐ŸŒ‚ The timing of those warnings might be iffy, but 600 people displaced due to flash flooding is major ๐Ÿšจ. And with bushfires still raging, this weather is just crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. The country needs to step up its game on climate change and disaster preparedness, imo ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’ช.

Ugh I'm so fed up with these weather warnings ๐Ÿคฏ! Can't they give us a bit more notice?! ๐Ÿ˜ก The fact that 600 people were displaced due to the floods is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ’”. And now we're expecting another 2 days of heavy rain and thunderstorms in Sydney?! It's like, can't we just have one decent weekend without getting caught out by Mother Nature? ๐ŸŒช๏ธ I'm so tired of living in a country that's just constantly battling extreme weather events. We need to do something about climate change, it's not like it's just some distant threat anymore... we're already feeling the effects right now! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

The timing of those warnings is quite interesting ๐Ÿค”, isn't it? I mean, on one hand, you've got the emergency management commissioner saying that they were issued in a timely manner... but on the other hand, you've also got the mayor from Colac complaining that they might not have reached holidaymakers in time ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. It's almost as if the warning system is still evolving and needs some fine-tuning to ensure everyone's safety. I think it's also worth considering the role of social media in disseminating emergency alerts... did people see those warnings on their phones? ๐Ÿ“ฑ

I'm really worried about these weather events, you know? Like, we're living in a world where extreme floods and bushfires are becoming super common ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. I think it's crazy that people had to be temporarily displaced due to the floods. And 600 people being affected is just...wow ๐Ÿ˜ฑ.

I also wonder if some of these warnings could've been issued earlier, especially for caravan parks in Colac. It seems like they were caught pretty off guard, and now they're dealing with all this damage ๐Ÿค•. I think we need to be more proactive about monitoring weather conditions and warning people in advance, you know? We can't just rely on the Bureau of Meteorology to get it right every time...it's not like they did here ๐Ÿ˜’.

And have you seen those temps that World Met Org mentioned? 1.48C above pre-industrial levels is wild ๐Ÿคฏ. It's crazy that we're still seeing such extreme weather patterns. We need to do something about climate change, for real ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ I'm not surprised they're defending the timing of those warnings... I mean, who expects a situation like that to happen? ๐Ÿคฏ It's just one of those crazy weather events that can pop up out of nowhere. The fact is, 600 people were displaced and multiple roads are still closed in Victoria... that's not something you can rush through issuing warnings on. And I think it's fair to say the Bureau did warn about heavy showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, so maybe the issue isn't with the timing, but more about getting those warnings out quickly enough for people to make informed decisions. ๐ŸŒŠ

๐ŸŒช๏ธ๐Ÿšจ warning times ๐Ÿšจ๐ŸŒช๏ธ

tho i dont think they should be defendin the timing of those warnings tho, its not like nothin was expected when u got a nats park flood event like tht ๐Ÿ˜ฑ 600 people displaced? thats a big deal. wat about the caravan park folk who got warnin after its already started rainin ๐Ÿค”

and btw, 180mm in colac? that's like somethin outta a cartoon ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿž๏ธ. like how do u even measure rain that heavy? anywayz, climate change is no joke, and nats disasters r gettin more intense by the year โ›ˆ๏ธ

the world meteorological organisation should be sayin somethin tho... 1.48c above preindustrial levels? thats crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฒ its like, what r we gonna do wiv this temperature trend?

anywayz, back to those warnings ๐Ÿ“ข. i think they shdve b more proactive & transparent wiv the pubic. wat if somethin serious happens & nobody knows bout it till its too late? ๐Ÿค•

๐Ÿค” I'm just thinking, 180mm of rain is wild, especially if you're not expecting it... like those holidaymakers stuck in caravan parks ๐Ÿšจ. I feel bad for them, but at the same time, it's not like they were exactly prepared for a flood ๐ŸŒŠ. And yeah, climate change and natural disasters are getting more intense, so maybe we should be expecting this kind of thing more often? ๐Ÿ’ฆ It's just crazy to think about how fast weather patterns can change... anyway, hope everyone in NSW is staying dry (and safe) this weekend โ˜๏ธ

I'm not sure what's more wild, the weather or the fact that people are still planning to hit the beach this weekend in Sydney ๐Ÿคฏ๐ŸŒŠ. I mean, seriously, it's been three years of "extraordinary global temperatures" and you're still expecting a dry summer? And Victoria is just dealing with its own bushfire drama on top of that. Like, can't we all just get along with the weather for once? ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ’ฆ

๐Ÿ˜’ I feel so bad for those people caught off guard by the flood. I mean, 180mm of rain is insane! ๐ŸŒ‚๐ŸŒด I'm surprised they didn't get more warnings, considering how unpredictable the weather was. It's not like the Bureau of Meteorology doesn't have a good track record of predicting storms and flooding events. The fact that they still managed to warn people a bit later seems like a pretty standard response time for an emergency situation ๐Ÿ™.

Ugh I'm so worried about all these bushfires in Vic ๐ŸŒช๏ธ, like have you seen the pics of those houses just destroyed? I was literally planning on going to Torquay for the weekend but now I don't know if it's even safe ๐Ÿค•. And don't even get me started on the weather predictions, 180mm of rain in Colac is insane! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ My car got flooded last year and I'm still finding bits of it under my bed. Anyway, I was reading this article about climate change and it just breaks my heart ๐Ÿ’”. Like, what's happening to our planet? And I know some people might be saying "oh but we have warnings now" but like, how many people are actually listening ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ?
