Former Virginia Teacher Describes Near-Death Experience After Being Shot by 6-Year-Old Student

A traumatic shooting incident that sent shockwaves through the country has finally come to light in a lawsuit filed against a former assistant principal. In January 2023, Abby Zwerner was shot in the hand and chest while teaching at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News. The young student, who is now facing criminal charges, pulled out a gun from his backpack and fired it at his teacher.

Zwerner testified that she thought she had died after being shot. "I thought I had died. I thought I was either on my way to heaven or in heaven," she said. "But then it all got black. And so, I then thought I wasn’t going there. And then my next memory is I see two co-workers around me and I process that I’m hurt and they’re putting pressure on where I’m hurt." Her injuries were severe, requiring six surgeries and leaving her with partial use of her left hand.

The lawsuit alleges that the former assistant principal, Ebony Parker, ignored multiple warnings about the student's access to a gun. A physician testified that Zwerner can't make a tight fist with her left hand due to the extent of her injuries.

Despite the severity of her injuries, Zwerner was able to get her students out of the classroom before passing out in the school office. The shooting has had long-term consequences for both Zwerner and Parker. Parker faces a separate criminal trial on eight counts of felony child neglect, while Zwerner is said to have no plans to teach again.

The student's mother, who had been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for her role in allowing the child to access a gun, has become somewhat of a shadow figure in the case. However, it's clear that the consequences of this incident will be felt for a long time to come.

Parker is the only defendant in the lawsuit, and her actions on the day of the shooting have been widely criticized as negligent and irresponsible. As she faces trial next month, her future remains uncertain. One thing is certain, however: this case has left an indelible mark on the lives of those affected by it.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing 🤯. I mean, a 6-year-old student pulling out a gun and shooting their teacher? It's just crazy. And the fact that the kid's mom got slammed with prison time for letting him access a gun in the first place? 😱 That's some messed up parenting right there.

But what really gets me is that this teacher, Abby Zwerner, was able to get her students out of class before she even passed out. Like, what kind of crazy adrenaline rush does it take to just get everyone else out the door while you're lying on the floor bleeding? 💔 It's like she's some kind of superhero or something.

And now, she can barely even make a fist with her left hand because of all the surgeries she went through. That's just heartbreaking. I mean, what do you say to someone who's gone from teaching kids to, like, struggling to do everyday stuff? 🤷‍♀️

Ebony Parker, the assistant principal, is facing some serious heat for not doing her job and preventing this whole thing from happening in the first place. Negligent and irresponsible, yeah... that sounds about right.

Anyway, I just feel so bad for all of these people involved. This shooting has left a huge dent in their lives, and it's going to take a long time to heal 🕰️.

I'm just so worried about Abby Zwerner's long-term health effects 🤕. Six surgeries and partial use of her left hand... it's just heartbreaking. And to think she was shot by a 6-year-old student who wasn't even supposed to have access to a gun in the first place 😱. As a parent, I would be devastated if my child were responsible for harming someone else, let alone a teacher trying to protect them 🤯.

I don't know what kind of support system Abby has in place now, but I hope she's getting the help she needs to deal with PTSD and any other trauma she may have experienced 💔. And what about her students? How are they coping with this traumatic event? As a community, we need to come together to support these children who were affected by this incident 🤝.

Ebony Parker's actions that day were completely unacceptable, and I hope she faces the consequences of her negligence 😬. But let's not forget about Abby and the other victims in this case... they're the ones who deserve our sympathy and support ❤️.

😱🤕 Oh man, that's just heartbreaking! 🤗 I'm still trying to process what happened to Abby Zwerner, that teacher who was shot by a 6-year-old student. I can only imagine how traumatic that experience must've been for her 😨. Six surgeries and partial use of her hand? That's just devastating 💔. And to think that Ebony Parker, the assistant principal, ignored warnings about the student's access to a gun... it's just not right 🤷‍♀️.

I'm so glad Abby was able to get her students out of the classroom safely before she passed out, though 💪. It's a miracle she's alive and kicking (well, mostly kicking 😉). But what's really concerning is that the student's mother has become somewhat of a shadow figure in this case... it just makes me wonder what went on behind the scenes 🤔.

I'm sending all my positive vibes to Abby Zwerner for her healing journey 💫. And I hope Ebony Parker gets the help she needs to move forward and learn from her mistakes ❤️. This whole ordeal has left a lasting impact, but maybe it can also spark some change in how we handle situations like this 🌟.

lolol what kinda school lets a 6 year old carry a gun to class tho?!?! Ebony Parker's negligence is wild, like she knew about the kid's access to guns and did nothing about it. And can we talk about how this little dude was able to pull that gun out of his backpack? That's some crazy stuff right there. I'm not saying Zwerner isn't a strong person for surviving this, but come on, Parker should've been keeping a closer eye on things. She's basically got her future ruined and it's gonna be a while before she can teach again 🤦‍♀️

omg u cannt believe this 6 yr old shot his teacher!!!! 😱 like what was goin thru that childs mind?? abby zwerner thought she died 🤯 and now shes got partial hand use lol i feel for her tho, six surgeries is a lot 💉 how did ebony parker not do more to prevent dis? shes facin trial and its all about child neglect 😕 i wonder whats goin thru that 6 yr olds mind rn...is it just a kid who got access to a gun or was there somethin else at play??? 🤔

🤕 my heart goes out to Abby Zwerner, she's been through so much! 6 years old to pull a gun and shoot someone?! 🚫 That's not just wrong, that's heartbreaking. And Ebony Parker, as an assistant principal, she should've done more to prevent this from happening in the first place.

I mean, I'm no expert, but it seems like some major red flags were ignored, and people are paying the price for it. Zwerner's injuries are still affecting her life, and I hope she gets the help and support she needs. It's not just about the physical pain, but also the emotional trauma that comes with it.

This whole thing is a wake-up call for us as a society. How did we let this happen?! We need to take responsibility for our actions (or lack thereof) and make sure something like this never happens again. 💪

🤕😱 This school shooting is just heartbreaking. I feel so bad for Abby Zwerner and her students who were there that day 🤗. How can a 6-year-old student even have access to a gun? 🚫 It's just not right ⚠️. And Ebony Parker, as the assistant principal, should have done more to prevent this tragedy from happening 💔.

I'm so glad Abby is alive and recovering from her injuries 🙏. But she'll never be able to teach again because of what happened to her hand 🤦‍♀️. It's just not fair 😢. And the student who pulled the trigger? He's going to have a long time to think about his actions before he's old enough to face justice ⏰.

This whole situation is just so sad and disturbing 😕. We need to do more to prevent these types of incidents from happening in our schools 📚. We can't keep putting our kids in harm's way 💔.

🤕 This whole incident is a dark reflection of our society's priorities... I mean, what kind of world do we live in where a 6-year-old child feels so desperate and angry that they resort to violence? 😔 And at the same time, how can we excuse or downplay the assistant principal's negligence when she knew about the student's access to a gun but chose to ignore it? 🤦‍♀️ It's like, where are the empathy channels in our system? Where is the support for these vulnerable kids and their families?

And what really gets me is that we're so quick to label this as just a "lone gunman" situation or focus on the mother's actions... but what about the root causes of violence among children? Are we not teaching them enough about emotional regulation, conflict resolution, or empathy? 🤔 Is it too much to ask for a safe and nurturing environment that can help kids develop into healthy humans?

It's all so... complex. 💭

🤯 I mean, can you believe a 6-year-old shot a teacher? That's just crazy talk! 🙅‍♂️ What were the parents thinking? It's not like they're going to let their kid have a gun, right? But apparently, that little dude had access to one, and now his teacher is partially paralyzed. 😱 Six surgeries, six years later... it's just heartbreaking.

And Ebony Parker, the assistant principal, is getting roasted for not doing her job. I get it, she messed up, but was she really supposed to be watching that kid 24/7? 🤷‍♀️ It's not like teachers are superheroes or anything.

The mom's in prison, which is what you'd expect, but the fact that the kid has no plans to teach again... I don't get it. Didn't he learn something from this experience? 😒 Anyway, this whole thing is just a big mess, and I'm not sure how anyone involved is going to come out of this without some serious emotional trauma. 🤕

Man, can you believe this? A 6-year-old kid just decides to pull out a gun and shoot his teacher in class... what's wrong with these parents?! They're so clueless. I mean, Ebony Parker, the assistant principal, she's supposed to be watching over those kids, but apparently, she didn't do her job right. And now she's facing charges and all that. The kid's mom is even behind bars for a bit of time... what about the kid? He's just a little kid himself! 🤯😡

🤯 This is just insane... a 6-year-old with access to a gun can almost kill his teacher? I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. How did we let this happen in our schools? We need to take a closer look at our laws and make sure kids aren't able to get their hands on guns so easily. Six surgeries and now she's left with partial use of her hand... it's just heartbreaking. And the fact that the assistant principal didn't do anything about it, despite multiple warnings, is just unbelievable. What kind of system allows this to happen? We need some serious changes here. 😩

I think the whole situation is being blown outta proportion 🙄. I mean, a 6-year-old pulls a gun and shoots his teacher? Yeah, that's bad, but come on, it was probably just a kid having a panic attack or something 🤷‍♂️. And what's with all the drama about Ebony Parker ignoring warnings? Maybe she's not as incompetent as everyone's making her out to be 🙃. I'm also surprised the teacher is giving up on teaching again after recovering from her injuries 💸. She should be able to handle a little stress, right? 😂 And what's with all the fuss about the student's mom? A few years in prison isn't gonna kill anyone, let alone ruin everyone else's life 🙄. I think people are just looking for someone to blame and Parker is an easy target 👎.

This whole thing is just too crazy 🤯... I mean, a 6-year-old pulling out a gun and shooting their teacher? It's like something straight out of a horror movie, right? 😱 But at the same time, you can't even begin to imagine what goes through a parent's mind who lets that happen. Is the kid just super disturbed or was there something more going on? The system is clearly broken in some way because how else do you explain this happening in the first place? 🤔 I'm all for keeping our schools safe, but sometimes it feels like we're just patching up holes instead of addressing the root problem.

🤯 Can you even imagine what Abby Zwerner went through? She's like... we're lucky to have functional hands, let alone be able to type lol! I'm so glad she got her students out safely but man, that student's family is some dark stuff right there. Like, what kind of mom lets their kid carry a gun to school?! 🤷‍♀️ And Ebony Parker, poor girl, she gets slammed with all this blame and it's not even like she meant to... it's just crazy how these things unfold. Anyways, I'm gonna keep an eye on this case, very tragic & disturbing
