Temperatures inside Wards Island homeless shelter fell to 45 degrees, inspectors say

Temperatures Inside NYC Men's Homeless Shelter Plummet to 45 Degrees

A recent inspection by the Coalition for the Homeless revealed shocking temperatures at a men's homeless shelter on Wards Island, with readings as low as 45 degrees inside. This egregious lapse in heating falls woefully short of the city's requirement that facilities maintain temperatures over 20 degrees warmer than the outside temperature.

Residents like Reinaldo, who has been temporarily housed there, have had to rely on makeshift solutions to cope with the biting cold. He expressed frustration at having to wear not one but two hoodies, multiple pairs of sweatpants, and a winter hat just to stay relatively warm.

While city officials claim that the issue lies in the window units rather than the overall heating system, this explanation rings hollow when faced with the reality of residents bundling up like they're about to venture into subzero temperatures. The Coalition for the Homeless argues that the building's aging infrastructure is to blame for allowing cold air to seep in.

The Coalition for the Homeless had been monitoring the shelter since early December, and their findings were disheartening. Jamie Powlovich, a senior manager with the organization, emphasized the gravity of the situation: "It was unacceptable." Volunteers of America, which manages the building, has declined to comment on the matter, leaving it to the city's Department of Homeless Services to address the issue.

In response to the findings, DHS spokesperson Nicholas Jacobelli claimed that their teams had taken steps to rectify the problem by addressing issues such as drafty windows and ensuring internal temperatures meet the legally mandated standards. However, these efforts seem insufficient given the prolonged exposure to subfreezing conditions faced by residents like Reinaldo.

๐Ÿค• I'm seriously worried about those guys at that homeless shelter ๐ŸŒƒ. 45 degrees is COLD!!! They should be able to stay warm in a building that's supposed to be a safe space, not freezing their bums off โ„๏ธ. I don't think it matters what the window units or heating system are like, if the whole place is drafty and cold, something needs to change ๐Ÿ’ก. It's not just about the physical health, but also the mental well-being of those guys ๐Ÿค•. They're already struggling on the streets, they shouldn't have to deal with that kind of stress indoors ๐Ÿ˜”.

omg this is so not cool ๐Ÿ˜ฑ 45 degrees is like, freezing โ„๏ธ i mean who expects to be homeless and then has to deal with that kinda weather? ๐Ÿคฏ the fact that they have to wear multiple layers just to stay warm is crazy ๐Ÿคช i'm all for people trying to help but come on, can't we do better than this? ๐Ÿ˜” the coalition for the homeless is right, it's not just about the window units, it's about the whole building being insulated properly ๐Ÿ”‡๐Ÿ‘

This is a classic case of trickle-down failure ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The city's Department of Homeless Services claims they're taking steps to fix the issue, but it seems like just more empty promises ๐Ÿ’”. If they were truly committed to solving the problem, they'd be working with organizations like the Coalition for the Homeless to address the root cause โ€“ outdated infrastructure ๐Ÿ—๏ธ. Instead, we get vague assurances and half-measures that only serve to further marginalize those already struggling on the streets โ„๏ธ.

It's time for this administration to put its money where its mouth is ๐Ÿ’ธ. We need concrete action, not just PR spin ๐Ÿ“ฐ. The city's homeless crisis is a symptom of deeper systemic issues, and we can't keep sweeping problems under the rug ๐Ÿšฎ. It's up to our leaders to take bold, meaningful steps to address this crisis โ€“ not just tweak the symptoms ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

๐Ÿ˜“ 45 degrees is way too cold for anyone to be stuck in a shelter. I remember when my cousin used to stay at a homeless shelter back in '99 and they had a nice warm common room with a fireplace, it was cozy! Nowadays it feels like nobody cares about the basic human needs of their citizens. ๐Ÿค• The fact that people are bundling up like they're going skiing just to survive is heartbreaking. I feel like we've lost sight of what's truly important โ€“ taking care of each other. ๐Ÿ’”

Ugh this is so messed up! ๐Ÿค• 45 degrees inside a homeless shelter in NYC? That's crazy talk! I mean, I know it's cold outside and all but come on! The city's got resources to provide proper heating for people who need a place to stay. This is just another example of how broken our system is.

I feel bad for Reinaldo and others like him having to resort to wearing like 3-4 layers of clothes just to stay warm. It's not right that they have to bundle up like it's winter outside when the shelter should be providing a safe haven from the elements.

I'm all for taking responsibility and fixing the problem, but "drafty windows" and "ensuring internal temperatures meet standards"? That sounds like just covering your tracks to me. We need more concrete action than just saying they're addressing the issue. What's the plan to fix it for good?

man i cant believe this is happenin in 2025 we r still dealin with homeless shelters havin probs like this? like what happened to all the progress we sposed to make? its not just about the temp tho, its about people's dignity and safety. i mean reinaldo has to wear like 3 layers of clothes just to stay warm? that's not livin, thats survivin. and whats with DHS sayin they fixed the problm but the temps are still dropin? sounds like more of the same old thing

I'm shakin my head over this homeless shelter situation in NYC ๐Ÿค•. 45 degrees is COLD, dude! I can only imagine how hard it must be for these guys to deal with that kind of chill. It's not just about the physical discomfort, but also the mental health impacts of living in such harsh conditions. The city should really step up their game and get those window units fixed ASAP ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ”ฉ

I don't think it's fair to say that volunteers of America is not doing enough to fix this issue... ๐Ÿค” I mean, sure, they haven't commented on it publicly, but maybe that's just a smart move in hindsight. Anyway, 45 degrees is pretty cold, and it sounds like the shelter was already having issues before this winter kicked in. Maybe instead of making a big deal about it now, we should be asking why shelters can't be built with better insulation from the start? ๐Ÿ’ก

come on ๐Ÿ™„ this is a disaster how can they even get it that bad? 45 degrees in a homeless shelter? what's next? freezing people out on the streets? and whats up with these "window units" they're just gonna fix the windows instead of getting some real heating system in there? and good luck with that, i bet the volunteers are still volunteering in the freezing cold ๐Ÿ˜‚ we should be outraged but like how are we supposed to care when the system is so broken?

Man, this is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ! A homeless shelter in NYC where people are literally freezing their bums off with temps as low as 45 degrees? That's unacceptable ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I mean, what's going on here? The city claims it's about the window units, but come on, that's not good enough ๐Ÿ”’. These people need real solutions, not just Band-Aid fixes.

I'm so tired of hearing that aging infrastructure is to blame, though ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. That's not a excuse for neglecting basic human needs like warmth and safety. The Coalition for the Homeless is right on the money when they say it was unacceptable ๐Ÿ˜ก. And what about all the volunteers who are working hard to help these people? They deserve better support from the city ๐Ÿ’•.

It's heartbreaking to think about Reinaldo having to bundle up like he's going skiing or something just to stay warm โ„๏ธ. This is not right, and it needs to change ASAP ๐Ÿšจ.

I'm really concerned about this homeless shelter situation ๐Ÿค•. 45 degrees is just ridiculous, especially considering the city's guidelines are supposed to be way warmer than that. It's not like they're asking for a five-star hotel in here, just some basic human decency to keep people from freezing their buns off โ„๏ธ. The fact that volunteers and staff have had to get creative with layer after layer of clothing just because the heating system is so broken is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜”.

And don't even get me started on the infrastructure thing ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. If the building's been neglected for years, it's no wonder drafts are a problem. It's not like they can just magic up some new heating system overnight, but what I want to know is how did this go unnoticed for so long? Did someone just sit back and let it happen? The city's claim that window units are the issue sounds convenient, but it feels like a cop-out to me ๐Ÿ™„.

I'm all for accountability, especially when it comes to vulnerable populations. The Coalition for the Homeless is right to speak out, and I hope the city takes this seriously and makes some real changes soon ๐Ÿ’ช. We can't just expect homeless people to wrap up in layers like it's no big deal ๐Ÿšซ. It's time for some serious support and infrastructure updates ๐Ÿ‘.

๐Ÿค• This is insane! Like, I can barely imagine shivering that much in a shelter ๐Ÿฅถ. The city's supposed to be doing better than this, you know? They're always talking about being more compassionate and helping people in need, but when it comes down to it, they're still not doing enough to keep their own facilities warm. โ„๏ธ I mean, 20 degrees warmer than the outside temp is not that hard to achieve! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ What's really sad is that residents are having to take matters into their own hands just to stay warm... like, wearing multiple layers of clothes? It's just ridiculous. ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

OMG u guys ๐Ÿคฏ this is crazy! 45 degrees in a homeless shelter? that's straight up survival mode โ„๏ธ like how r u even supposed to function at that temp?! and yeah idk bout the window thingy but it seems like they're just winging it here ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ i mean if u gotta bundle up like ur venturing into arctic circle lol what's goin on? should be a full-on investigation imo

omg this is so not cool at all! 45 degrees is freezing!! i cant even imagine having to wear like 3 layers of clothes just to stay warm ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿ˜“ how can a shelter fail so badly on something as basic as heating? the coalition for the homeless sounds like they're doing their due diligence in investigating this issue, and i hope the city takes action ASAP to get it sorted out ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ช

omg u guys this is sooooo messed up i mean 45 degrees is like literally freezing!! i feel bad for reinaldo and everyone else who has to go thru that lol he's gotta wear like 3 layers just to stay warm ๐Ÿคฃ and yeah the windows thing sounds lame but cmon how can u not know that it's a huge issue? ๐Ÿ™„ i'm all about helping ppl in need, but this is just plain cruel ๐Ÿค• we need better shelters, esp during winter ๐Ÿ’”
