Tencent agrees to stop promoting its Horizon ripoff during Sony lawsuit

Tencent Settles Horizon Ripoff Lawsuit by Stopping Promotion

In a significant development, Tencent has agreed to cease promoting and publicly testing its game "Light of Motiram" amid an ongoing lawsuit with Sony. The decision comes as Sony seeks to block the sale of the game entirely, citing concerns over its striking resemblance to the popular Horizon franchise.

As part of this agreement, Tencent submitted a court filing stating that there would be no new promotion or public testing of the game while the injunction request is being argued. In return, Sony will grant Tencent more time to respond to the injunction.

The lawsuit centers around "Light of Motiram," an open-world hunting game that shares numerous similarities with Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel. The visual appearance of characters and marketing materials are particularly strikingly similar, prompting Sony's legal team to label the game a "slavish clone."

However, there is some nuance to the similarities between the two games. While the Horizon series is primarily third-person adventure in the vein of Zelda, Light of Motiram appears to be a cooperative survival game.

Tencent is a massive media conglomerate with significant investments in numerous high-profile gaming companies, including Riot Games, Supercell, and Funcom, among others. This added context highlights the company's considerable resources and influence in the gaming industry.

The specifics of the settlement remain unclear, but it appears that Tencent has agreed to keep Light of Motiram out of the spotlight until the lawsuit is resolved. The outcome of this case will be closely watched by gamers and industry observers alike, given the significant financial stakes involved.

I'm kinda surprised they settled like that... I mean, I get where Sony's coming from with how similar Light of Motiram looks to Horizon 😐. But at the same time, it is a cooperative survival game, so maybe there's more depth to the gameplay than we're seeing on the surface? 🤔

It's still a bit concerning that Tencent would release something so close to another IP without being more transparent about the differences... I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out 🎮. The lawsuit does seem like it's going to be pretty interesting, though - will Light of Motiram even get released now? 🤯

I think it's kinda weird that Sony is being so aggressive about this, but at the same time I get why they'd want to protect their IP. 🤔 Like, can't we just appreciate good game design without getting all bent outta shape? 😊 Tencent's a huge company with lots of resources, and if they've made it clear they're not trying to pass off Light of Motiram as something entirely new... why not just let the market decide? 🤑 I mean, gamers are always looking for new experiences, so maybe this can be an opportunity for both parties to grow and learn from each other. Fingers crossed the lawsuit gets resolved soon and we get to play some awesome games! 👍

this is a big deal 🤔 think about it, tencent one of the biggest gaming companies in the world basically has to stop promoting their game light of motiram because sony thinks its too similar... its like, how much influence does sony have over what other devs can do? imo its a pretty strong message that even a huge company like tencent needs to back down when faced with a lawsuit. and its not just about the game itself but also about the business model and how big players can stifle innovation in the industry 🤑

🤯 u know what's wild? like gaming companies r so big & powerful now 🤑 but sometimes they gotta deal with lawsuits over copying games lol... i mean i get it, originality matters 💡 especially when its a game like Horizon that has such a dedicated fanbase 😊. but at the same time, i feel bad for Tencent bc they're not even getting to promote their own game 🎮. and idk man, if there is nuance to light of motiram being different from horizon... maybe we should be having more discussion about what that looks like? 🤔💬

Ugh, can't believe my favorite indie devs get crushed like this 🤕. I mean, who hasn't played Light of Motiram? 😂 It's not like it's a blatant rip-off or anything... but at the same time, you gotta admit those similarities with Horizon are pretty wild 🔥. I just hope this doesn't set a bad precedent for other devs and big corps trying to copy each other's IPs without permission 🤦‍♂️. The fact that Tencent has agreed to back down is a bummer, too - I was looking forward to checking it out 👀. Guess we'll have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out in court... fingers crossed for some innovative devs who don't need to rip off others' work 💪.

I think this whole thing is pretty messy 🤯. On one hand, I get why Sony's all bent outta shape - those similarities are pretty striking. But on the other hand, I can see how Light of Motiram could be seen as just copying Horizon without really trying to innovate or put its own spin on things.

And let's be real, Tencent's got some serious resources and influence in the gaming industry 🤑. They're not exactly a small-time operation, you know? So, it's kinda weird that they're getting taken down by Sony over this.

I do think there might be more to the similarities between the two games than initially meets the eye, though 🤔. Like, what if Light of Motiram is actually trying to do something different in its own way? Maybe it's just not being recognized for it yet. Who knows?

Anyway, I'm gonna keep an eye on this one and see how it all plays out 🔍. It'll be interesting to see how the court rules and whether or not Tencent comes out swinging (or should I say, promoting?) 🎮

omg i cant even believe tencent got caught slippin' like what r u people doin at tencent game dev?? 😲 they gotta be gettin some serious retraining or somethin cuz this rip off game is straight fire 🔥 and now theyre just gonna stop promotoin it? thats the most boring way out for them lol. idk how much more cash sony can squeeze outta this but like if u ask me tencent shouldve just come clean about inspired by horizon or somethin instead of makin all these changes 2 fit in... 😒

omg can you believe tencent would do this they invested so much time & money into this game just to get slapped with a lawsuit 🤯 like what were they thinking tho? i mean i know sony is trying to protect their franchise and all but it's also kinda unfair to tencent if they're really that closely related 😊 anyway, gotta keep an eye on this case - sounds like it could get messy 💸
