The Doomsday Clock Is Now 85 Seconds to Midnight. Here’s What That Means

The world is 85 seconds away from midnight, the closest it has ever been to global catastrophe. The Doomsday Clock, a symbolic representation of humanity's proximity to destruction, has been set at its most alarming position in nearly eight decades.

This dire assessment comes as the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Science and Security Board (SABS) warns that catastrophic risks are increasing, international cooperation is declining, and swift action is urgently needed from global leaders. The group highlights growing threats such as nuclear war, climate change, artificial intelligence, and biological threats, all of which pose existential risks to humanity.

Instead of addressing these challenges, major countries like the United States, Russia, China, and others have become even more aggressive and nationalistic, exacerbating the problem. "The dangerous trends in nuclear risk, climate change, disruptive technologies like AI, and biosecurity are accompanied by another frightening development: the rise of nationalistic autocracies in countries around the world," said SABS president Daniel Holz.

As a result, global threats are worsening, and international cooperation is collapsing. The clock's hands have been moved to their most alarming position since 1947, when it was first created during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The current setting of 85 seconds to midnight represents nearly an eight-decade-long trend of increasing global risks.

The clock serves as a reminder that time is running out for humanity to act on these existential threats. While there is still time to change course, the Doomsday Clock also symbolizes the world's vulnerability as it nears the point of no return. For instance, the United States and Russia could resume discussions on limiting their nuclear arsenals, while multilateral agreements and national regulations can be implemented to reduce the possibility of artificial intelligence being used to create biological threats.

Ultimately, the Doomsday Clock is a call to action for global leaders, particularly those in the United States, Russia, and China. National leaders must take the lead in finding a way out of the abyss, while citizens must insist that they do so. The clock's ominous warning signals a stark reminder that humanity's future hangs precariously in the balance.

🕰️ come on guys! 85 seconds to midnight? how can we even move towards change when everyone's too busy being nationalistic and aggressive 🤖👊? i mean, seriously, is it too much to ask for world leaders to put aside their egos and work together on some actual solutions? 🤔 the doomsday clock just highlights all the stuff we've been ignoring or downplaying for years... nuclear war, climate change, ai, bioterrorism... the list goes on 💥🌡️ it's time for a collective wake-up call! 😳

🕰️ I'm really concerned about this Doomsday Clock thingy... 85 seconds to midnight? That's like, super close! 🚨 I mean, we need to take care of these global threats or else it'll be game over for humanity 😬. The fact that major countries are being all aggressive and nationalistic is not helping 🤖. We need leaders to step up and talk to each other, figure out a way to reduce the risks of nuclear war, climate change, AI, and biosecurity 🤝.

I mean, it's like, we're already running out of time ⏰. The clock is just a reminder that we need to take action now 🚨. I'm not sure what's going on with the US, Russia, and China, but they gotta start talking and working together ASAP 🤝. And citizens should be holding their leaders accountable too 👥.

It's a bit overwhelming thinking about all these existential threats 🌪️, but if we don't work together, it'll be... well, let's just say it won't be good 😟. So, yeah, the Doomsday Clock is like, super serious 🕰️. We need to take this seriously and act fast 💨!

come on people can't you see what's going on here 🤯 85 seconds away from midnight? it's not just the clock it's our reality we're running out of time and still no one is doing anything about it 🕰️. I mean i'm not saying global leaders are bad guys or anything but seriously have they been asleep for the past decade because if they haven't woken up yet then we need to wake them up ourselves 😤.

I'm not even going to go into how nationalistic and aggressive countries like us russia china etc are being it's just ridiculous 🙄. we're all in this together and it's time we started acting like it 👫. i mean artificial intelligence biological threats nuclear war climate change - all these things are interconnected and we need to address them as one global community not each country on their own 🌎.

i'm so tired of hearing people say "well what can we do?" or "it's too late" no we're not too old too poor too dumb or whatever excuse you want to come up with just get on the phone or send an email or write a petition or join a protest for god sake something 📣. we need to demand change from our leaders and we need to do it now ⏰.

I'm getting major anxiety vibes from this news 🕰️😬. We're literally 85 seconds away from midnight and it feels like nobody's taking this seriously enough. I mean, I get it, global politics can be super complicated but it seems like we're just running out of time to address these existential threats. Climate change, nuclear war, AI... the list goes on and it's all connected 🤯.

I'm not sure what's more worrying, the fact that international cooperation is declining or that major countries are becoming even more aggressive and nationalistic 🤖. It's like we're circling back to the Cold War era but with way more tech at our disposal.

We need to take a collective deep breath and remind ourselves that time is running out 👀. We can still make a difference if global leaders step up their game and citizens hold them accountable 💪. Can't we just get on board with finding solutions before it's too late? 🤞

this is insane 85 seconds to midnight i cant even wrap my head around it we're literally on borrowed time for all these existential threats to come together it feels like we're sleepwalking into a catastrophe and no one's waking us up 🚨😵 what's wrong with our leaders? how can they be so blind to the fact that their nationalistic agendas are just fueling the fire of global chaos? i mean, we need cooperation not aggression, but instead of working together, they're making things worse it's like we're staring into the abyss and no one knows how to blink 👀💥

I'm not buying this Doomsday Clock drama 🤔. It sounds like just another excuse for governments to be lazy and for people to freak out. I mean, 85 seconds? That's hardly enough time to fix anything. And what does it really mean when they say global leaders need to "take the lead"? Just a fancy way of saying they want more power and control 🤑. We've been hearing this sort of thing for years, but nothing ever changes. It's just a bunch of hype and finger-pointing. The real question is, what are we actually going to do about it? 😒

😬 I'm literally shook right now reading this 🤯 85 seconds to midnight is insane... like we're living in a real-life video game where the apocalypse is just around the corner 🚨. It's so frustrating seeing major countries being all aggressive and nationalistic, it feels like they're more worried about their own interests than saving humanity 🙅‍♂️.

I know the Doomsday Clock thing might sound dramatic, but honestly, it's kind of a reflection of our current state 🌎. We need to come together as humans and start solving these existential threats ASAP ⏰. I mean, who doesn't want to live in a world where we don't have to worry about nuclear war or AI taking over? 🤖 It's like, can't we all just get along and work towards a better future? 🤞

🕰️😱 oh my god 85 seconds is crazy what are we gonna do?! 🤯 I'm really scared but I still have hope we can make a change if we all come together and support each other 💖💪 we gotta wake up leaders around the world and tell them we need action now 🕊️👥 we can't keep living like this with climate change, nuclear war, AI, etc. it's too much to handle 💥 but I believe in humanity and I know we can do better let's make a difference everyone! 🌟💫

🕰️😬 oh man 85 secs to midnight is kinda scary 🤯 time is running out for us 🌎 we gotta come together as a global fam 🌈 and address these major issues ASAP ⏱️💨 nuclear war climate change ai biosecurity are all big threats 🚨🌪️ we need leaders from countries like usa russia china to take action 💪🔥 and citizens too 🤝 we can't just sit around waiting for someone else to do it 🙅‍♂️ let's work together to avoid this apocalypse 🌟💫

🤝🌎💕 we need to be kind to each other 🤗 and respect different perspectives 🤔 because if we don't 🚫 we might just run out of time ⏰😱 so let's raise our voices and demand change 🗣️💪 from our leaders and from ourselves 🙌🌟

omg i cant even process this 🤯, like 85 seconds to midnight feels like its already too late for us 💔, im scared thinking about all these threats and no one seems to be doing anything about it 😬, i mean china russia usa are all being super aggressive and nationalistic and its just making things worse 🤖, i wish someone would take action on this but its hard not to feel hopeless right now ☹️, like what can we even do besides panic and wait for the clock to strike midnight? 😬

You know what's weird? I was just thinking about my old camera the other day... had it for like 10 years and never used it 📸. I think I finally found a use for it, though - my niece loves taking pictures with me, so now we have a regular photo shoot session every week 😊. My niece is really into Pokémon right now too, does anyone else's kid get obsessed with those things?

omg 85 seconds to midnight is crazy 🕰️😱 can't believe we're literally running out of time on this earth thing. like climate change, nukes, AI and bio threats are all super real and we need to do something about it ASAP 💻🌎. but its not just global leaders who need to step up, citizens gotta hold them accountable too 👥💪. we can't just sit around waiting for someone else to save us, we gotta take action ourselves 🤔💡

I'm getting really worried about this 😬 the world is literally on the brink of disaster and nobody seems to be doing anything about it 🙅‍♂️ it's like, we all know the risks but instead of working together to fix them, everyone's just pointing fingers at each other 🤔 and taking advantage of the situation 🤑 I mean what can we do? We can't keep living in a world where nuclear war, climate change, AI, and biosecurity are constantly threatening us 🚨 I feel like we're running out of time 🕰️

this is getting freaky 😱 the world is literally on thin ice and nobody's doing anything about it 🤦‍♂️ i mean what's up with these countries being all aggressive and nationalistic? like, can't they see we're all gonna get wiped out if we don't get our acts together?! 🚀 and the doomsday clock is literally ticking away ⏰ 85 seconds to midnight, that's not a drill fam! someone needs to take charge and lead us out of this mess before it's too late 🕰️
