The haunting Masters meltdown that changed Rory McIlroy’s career | CNN

Here's a summary of the article about Rory McIlroy:

**The 2011 Masters: A Turning Point in McIlroy's Career**

Rory McIlroy had a disappointing experience at the 2011 Masters, where he was leading the tournament with nine holes to go before unraveling. This collapse cost him his first major victory and left him with a lasting memory of frustration.

**The Fallacy of "What If"**

McIlroy acknowledged that winning The Masters in his career is unthinkable without taking out this one major title. Despite being only 23 years old at the time, McIlroy had a promising career ahead of him, but he knew he still had to get over the line at Augusta National.

**The Elusive Green Jacket**

Since then, McIlroy has experienced ups and downs in his career. He won the US Open eight weeks after the Masters, but despite seven top-10 finishes in his past 10 Masters outings, The Masters remains the only major title to elude him.

**A Golden Era (Almost)**

McIlroy's career was marked by a golden era from 2014 to 2016, where he won three majors. However, since then, his performances have been inconsistent. He finished as runner-up at Augusta National in 2022 and has struggled to find consistency in major championships.

**Time is Still on His Side**

At 33 years old, McIlroy still has time to get the one major title that has eluded him for so long. With a renewed sense of determination and experience, he is determined to add The Masters to his trophy collection.

In short, Rory McIlroy's collapse at the 2011 Masters had a lasting impact on his career, but it also served as a turning point in his journey towards greatness. Will this year be the one where he finally wins his first major title?

so rory mcilroy still can't win masters 🤔 its like he's been close so many times but just cant get over that last hurdle... he had a great run from 2014 to 2016, won three majors and was basically unbeatable on the course 😅 but then things started to fall apart. now hes back at it again trying to finally win masters, im rooting for him! 🤞

I mean, 33 years old and still chasing that elusive green jacket 🙄... I think what's crazy is how consistent he's been at majors since 2014, like seven top-10 finishes in ten outings... still got game 💪. His collapse at the 2011 Masters was def a setback, but did it really define his career? I don't know, feels like there are still so many good rounds to be played out of him 🤔. Maybe this year's gonna be different... would love to see him finally get that one major title 🎉.

lol 🤔 i was thinking same thing about Rory Mcilroy tho... what's up with masters? like, everyone else got them and he just can't get it 🙄 33 and still no green jacket... maybe this year will be the one though 😅 you think rory's gonna surprise us all? 👀 [check out rory mcilroy's career so far](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_McIlroy)

I think it's crazy to think that one bad day can define an entire career lol 😂. Rory McIlroy was only 23 when that happened and still had so much potential ahead of him. It's like, what if he didn't let one bad day get to him back then? Maybe we'd be seeing a different story right now 🤔. But you know, life goes on and I think it's awesome how Rory has bounced back with some amazing wins in the past 😊. Now that he's 33, I'm kinda rooting for him to finally get that Masters title 💪. He still has time to make it happen and prove all his doubters wrong 👍.

🏌️‍♂️ I feel bad for Rory McIlroy after what happened at the 2011 Masters... like he was so close to winning it all, but then just dropped the ball (no pun intended). But you know, it's crazy how a single event can shape our lives in ways we never could've imagined. For me, I think his career is still got plenty of life left in it. He's proven himself as one of the best golfers out there and with a bit more experience under his belt, I reckon he'll finally get that elusive green jacket 🙌

I feel bad for Rory, he's been so close to that green jacket and it's still lingering 🤔🏆. I think what hurts him is not just the Masters win itself but also that whole 2011 experience - leading by nine holes and then totally falling apart 😳. He's had an amazing career since then, but now he's at that age where people start to wonder if it'll ever come together for him 🕰️. Still, I love his determination and he's got the game to do it... fingers crossed he gets it done this year! 💪

you know what's wild... i was watching old vids of rory mcilroy playing golf and it made me think about how much my swing has changed since high school 🤦‍♂️ i used to be all over the place like a chicken with its head cut off, but now i'm more like a robot - stiff and precise 🤖 does anyone still use the old swing style? 🤔

🤔 I think what's gonna give Rory the edge is his experience. He's played like 10 Masters now and has a plan 📈. Can you imagine if he just kept calm like he did at the 2019 US Open 😎? Then we might see him lift that Golden Jacket in '25 💥! The pressure on golfers to perform only gets bigger, but if Rory stays focused and confident, I think he's got this 🔥

🤔 I feel for the guy, he's been so close to that Green Jacket for so long, it's gotta be frustrating not knowing when it'll happen. He's still got a solid game and experience is definitely on his side now 🙏. Maybe this year will be the one where everything clicks into place? Fingers crossed for him!

🤯 I mean, can you even imagine being on that stage with the entire golf world watching and knowing you're THAT close to winning The Masters?! 🏆 And then it all falls apart in a matter of minutes... 9 holes down and suddenly your dreams are shattered. 😩 It's like, what if? What if he just kept his cool for those last 9 holes? Would the outcome be any different? I'm still shaking my head about that moment 🙄

And honestly, it's not just The Masters. I feel like Rory McIlroy has been on this "almost" trajectory for years now... almost winning a major, almost being runner-up, and yet he always seems to come up short 🤕 It's like he's cursed or something! 😂 But seriously though, 33 is still pretty young in golf terms. I think Rory just needs to refocus and trust the process again 🙏 Can you imagine how amazing it would be if he finally breaks that curse and wins The Masters? 🎉

🤔 I think its all about mental toughness and focus for Rory now 🌟. He's been close before & has the talent to win any day. 33 isnt old at all for a pro golfer! 💪

idk if rory mcilroy will ever get that green jacket lol 😂 he's been close so many times but just can't seem to put it all together, but at the same time, 33 isn't old for a golfer so i'm still holding out hope for him 🤞 maybe he'll have one of those clutch moments and finally win majors consistently 💪

I'm telling you, this guy's been around for ages now... like what, almost 15 years since that Masters collapse 🤯 He was so close to winning it back then, but it just didn't happen. I remember watching him play back in the day, he was always so full of potential. And then this golden era from 2014-2016? Unbelievable, man... like he just won every major consecutively or something 😂 Now at 33, I think he's getting close to making it happen. The pressure's on, but you know what? Time is still on his side... and we all know how that turned out for Tiger Woods 🙄 Fingers crossed for Rory this year!

omg i was thinking about golf the other day and i was like why do some players wear those silly hats 🤣 anyway back to Rory McIlroy, it's crazy how one mistake can change your whole career path. i mean, 33 is still pretty young for a major win, so fingers crossed for him this year! 🤞 i've been trying to get into golf myself but my swing is super bad 😂

I mean, can you believe how close he was to winning The Masters back in 2011 😩? I think that was such a huge turning point for him and his career. He's been so consistent in majors since then but still hasn't gotten over the line 🤔. It's crazy to think about all the what ifs, you know? What if he hadn't choked under pressure? 🙅‍♂️ But at 33 now, I'm sure he'll be even hungrier for that Green Jacket 👕 and will stop at nothing to make it happen 💪

I think the whole "what if" scenario is overrated 🤔. Rory McIlroy was 23 and already had an amazing career ahead of him, but that one collapse at Augusta National in 2011 shouldn't define him for the rest of his life. He's bounced back from bad rounds and tough losses before, and I think he'll find a way to overcome this too 😊. At 33, he still has plenty of time to achieve his goals and prove all the doubters wrong 💪.

lol what's up with rory still chasing that green jacket after all these yrs 🤦‍♂️ like dude u got 3 majors already under ur belt, 33 and still on about it 💯 he needs to chill & focus on the present 🏌️‍♂️

omg i'm so hyped for rory mcilroy lol he's been so close to that green jacket and i'm rooting for him 2c! he's still got time on his side and if anyone can do it, he can 🏌️‍♂️🔥 i mean, 3 majors in a row is insane from 2014-2016 and then he just slows down? idk but i'm here for the comeback rn 💪👊

🤔 I think its crazy that Rorys still chasing that one major title. He's already won so many other big tournaments and has been on top of his game for years, but The Masters is still holding him back 😔. Maybe this year will be the one though, he seems to have gained a new sense of determination. I wonder if he'll finally get over that 2011 collapse... 🤞
