‘The New Big 5’: Wildlife photography book turns the lens on animals at risk | CNN

Graeme Green, a renowned wildlife photographer, has taken the iconic "Big Five" animal list - originally used to describe trophy hunters' most challenging prey in Africa - and turned it on its head. The British photographer has created a new, global list of five endangered animals that he believes are at risk of disappearing forever.

These animals were chosen through a worldwide vote involving 50,000 people. They were crowned the winners: elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger. Green's "New Big Five" project aims to raise awareness about these species and inspire action to protect them from extinction.

The new book features stunning images of these animals taken by some of the world's most renowned wildlife photographers, including Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen. Essays by famous conservationists and activists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu are also included in the book.

Green explains that he created the project after a decade-long assignment in Botswana when he realized the need to shift focus from hunting wildlife with cameras instead of guns. The photographs featured in the book highlight some of the most beautiful and striking images of these species, serving as a powerful reminder of what we stand to lose if we fail to act.

The book also includes essays that explore potential solutions for conservation, such as rewilding and the importance of indigenous communities in protecting wildlife habitats.

Green emphasizes that the "New Big Five" project is not just about showcasing endangered animals but also serves as a call to action. The plight of these species should inspire people to take immediate action to preserve nature and ensure a better future for generations to come.

Graeme Green's groundbreaking project, "The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife," is now available in bookstores from April 4, 2023.

The images from Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen are mind-blowing – who knew these animals were still this gorgeous?! 🦁🐯🌳 I'm especially loving the essays from Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu – so inspiring to see people taking action for conservation! 💚 One thing that's got me thinking is how rewilding can actually be a game-changer for species like the polar bear and elephant. We need to get creative if we want to save them 🌟

omg u guys I am literally SHOOK by Graeme Greens new project "The New Big 5" 🤯 it's like he took the original list and turned it into a love letter to these 5 amazing animals... elephants polar bears lions gorillas and tigers are all on that list for a reason, they're literally on the brink of extinction 💔 I mean I've seen some gorgeous pics in my time but these ones take my breath away every time Ami Vitale Steve McCurry and Paul Nicklen are like the ultimate photographers, I'm not surprised they're part of this project 😍 what I love most about it though is that it's not just a showcase for the animals, its also got some amazing essays from Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu about conservation and indigenous communities... its like, wake up people! we need to act now or these incredible creatures will be gone forever 🌎💚

I'm so down with this new movement 🌟! I mean, who doesn't love animals? And the fact that Graeme Green took the original "Big Five" list and flipped it on its head to raise awareness about endangered species is pure genius 💡. I've always been a fan of wildlife photography, and now I get to see some of the most stunning images of these amazing creatures in one book 📚.

I love how he brought together so many talented photographers and conservationists to create this project. It's not just about showing off the animals – it's about inspiring us to take action 🌎. We need more people like Graeme Green, who are passionate about protecting our planet and its incredible wildlife.

And can we talk about the importance of indigenous communities in protecting wildlife habitats? 🌿 It's so crucial that we involve them in conservation efforts, not just because it's the right thing to do, but also because they have the most valuable knowledge and expertise on how to preserve these ecosystems.

Anyway, I'm totally getting this book for my sister – she's an animal lover, just like me 🐾👫.

I'm not sure how I feel about this whole "New Big Five" thing 🤔. On one hand, it's awesome that Graeme Green is using his platform to raise awareness about endangered animals and inspire people to take action 💡. The fact that a worldwide vote involving 50k people got us to the top five list isn't bad either 👍.

But, I need more info on how this project was actually done 📚. How reliable are the votes? Was it a scientifically-backed selection process or just a popularity contest? And what makes Graeme Green think that these animals are the most at risk of disappearing forever 🐠?

The images look stunning, no doubt about that 📸. But, can we really trust the motivations behind this project? Is Graeme Green trying to sell us something 🛍️? I need some solid sources on this one before I get all excited about saving the world 🌎.

just saw this news 🐘💚 gotta say, its crazy how one guy can make such a big impact with his photography 📸 and passion for wildlife conservation. the new "big five" list is so important - we need to wake up to the fact that these animals are in danger of disappearing forever ⏰. 50k people voting on it is amazing, its not just about showcasing their beauty, but also raising awareness and inspiring action 🌟

omg this is so sad 🐘💔 i mean what can we do to stop these animals from disappearing forever? i feel like we're already doing too little and it's time for us to take real action...like rewilding habitats and supporting indigenous communities who actually care about the environment 🌳💚 i'm so tired of just looking at pictures of endangered animals, what are we gonna do with them? we need to turn our words into action, not just use our cameras to capture a few good shots 📸👍

I was just thinking about what I'm gonna make for dinner tonight 🍳👌 and I totally forgot to order that new batch of artisanal pasta sauce online 🤦‍♂️. Have you tried that new Korean BBQ place downtown? I heard it's supposed to be amazing 🍗😋. Anyway, back to this wildlife photographer guy... I love how he took the "Big Five" concept and flipped it on its head 🔄. Can we get a documentary series about endangered animals? That would be so cool 📺🌟.

📸💚 I'm totally stoked about this new "New Big Five" project by Graeme Green! It's amazing how a simple idea to recreate the iconic list of animals can spark such change 🌟. The fact that 50,000 people got involved in voting for their favorite endangered species is mind-blowing 🤯.

I love how the book features incredible photos from top wildlife photographers and essays from renowned conservationists 📚💡. It's not just about showing off the animals' beauty (although, oh my gosh, those pics are stunning 😍), but also about sparking action and solutions for conservation 🌿.

The idea of rewilding and indigenous communities playing a key role in wildlife preservation is so important 🌸. We need to start thinking beyond just photography and start taking real steps towards saving these incredible species 🐘💪.

Can't wait to get my hands on this book and share it with others 📚👫! The world needs more projects like this to raise awareness and inspire change 💖.

idk why ppl think voting on endangered animals is gonna make a diff 🤷‍♂️ its just another way to feel good about urself while the actual work of saving them gets left undone. i mean, sure, its heartwarming to see famous wildlife photographers and conservationists get involved but lets be real, what's the end game here? just a bunch of ppl pointing at pretty pics and saying "oh no, look at the elephants" 🐘 meanwhile the actual poaching and habitat destruction is still happening. gotta take action, not just take pictures 😒
