The Storm Whale review – touching tale of a little leviathan's surprise visit

The Storm Whale, an adaptation of Benji Davies' 2013 picture book, charms audiences with its idyllic seaside setting and heartwarming tale of friendship between a young boy named Noi and a washed-up whale. The production, directed by Matt Aston, sensitively explores the theme of solitude vs loneliness, a lesson passed on to Noi by his deceased mother.

However, some may find the script's earnest messages repetitive, and the dialogue occasionally wearying. While the show is certainly evocative, it lacks a touch of raucous fun that might appeal more to older audiences. The theatre's previous production, The Singing Mermaid, had a more energetic tone, which this adaptation seems to have left behind.

One notable aspect of the production is its use of puppetry, with Keith Frederick's whale puppet being a particular standout. The show also features impressive choreography by Hayley Del Harrison and lighting design by Jason Salvin, creating an immersive experience for young viewers.

If only the script had been more playful and adventurous in tone, The Storm Whale would have truly come alive on stage. Instead, it feels somewhat subdued compared to other children's shows. Despite this, the production remains a touching tale of friendship that will likely resonate with its young audience.

I'm not loving the vibe of The Storm Whale 🐳😐. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's got all these beautiful elements like the seaside setting and the heartwarming story about friendship... but for a show aimed at older kids and adults too, I feel like it's missing that extra kick to make it more engaging? It's just so... wholesome 🌸. Don't get me wrong, it's cute and all, but I'd love to see some more energy and playfulness in the script! The puppetry is fire tho 💥🐳, especially Keith Frederick's whale puppet! 🤩

omg u guys i just watched the storm whale w/ my kiddo & honestly it was soooo cute 🐳🌊 but like i gotta be real the story felt kinda repetitive idk if they could've made it more exciting for older kids? 🤔 the puppets tho are EVERYTHING 👀 keith frederick's whale puppet is insane! 🔥 and the choreo & lighting were on point too 💃🏻🔦 i feel like with a bit more swag the show would've been lit 🔥 but still it was sweet n gentle n perfect 4 little ones 🌟

I dunno, I feel like we've lost something when stuff gets too serious and plays it safe 🤔. The Storm Whale is definitely a beautiful thing, but it's just so... understated, you know? Like, where's the wildness? The excitement? It feels like they're holding back on that raucous fun for older audiences, which I get, but it makes me wonder if we're missing out on something special. I mean, what would've happened if Noi and his whale friend just let loose and had some epic adventures together? 🌊💥 It's like, the script is trying to teach us about solitude vs loneliness, but sometimes you gotta learn by doing, you know? 🤷‍♂️

I went to see The Storm Whale last weekend 🌊 and I gotta say, it was really sweet but also kinda meh at times 😐. The puppets were amazing, especially Keith's whale - so adorable! 👍 But the dialogue felt a bit too preachy for my taste, you know? Like, I get that it's trying to teach us something about loneliness and all that, but can't we just have some fun moments instead of hitting us over the head with it all the time? 🤔 Still, it was really well done and I loved seeing the little boy Noi's bond with his whale friend develop. The lighting and choreography were top notch too! 💡

I don't know if I'm gonna be disappointed or not but I kinda feel like The Storm Whale is missing that extra kick, you know? It's like, it's all so lovely and pretty, but sometimes I just wanna have a good time, ya know? I mean, the puppetry is insane and the choreo is fire 💥🎩. But if they'd brought some more energy to the script, man... that would've been a whole different show 🤔. Still, it's sweet, I guess 😊. Young kids are gonna love it, no doubt about it 👍

I gotta say, I'm underwhelmed by this adaptation 🤔. People are gonna love how sweet and sentimental it is, but I think it's too on-the-nose for my taste. Like, come on, the theme of solitude vs loneliness is so obvious - can't they come up with something a bit more subversive? And don't even get me started on the script's repetition 🙄... it's like they're trying to drill a point home or something. I mean, can't we have some fun and games for once? The puppetry is nice, though 👏 - that whale puppet does look pretty epic! But overall, I think it feels like it's missing a bit of oomph to really make it pop 🎉.

I think people are being too harsh on The Storm Whale 😐. I mean, it's just a show about a kid and his whale friend having a good time at the seaside 🏖️. It's not like it's trying to be some big, loud musical or anything 🎶. I think the script is sweet, even if it is a bit on the nose sometimes 👀. And those puppetry skills? 🔥🐳 Matt Aston did an amazing job bringing the whole thing together. Plus, the show is just so visually stunning, especially with all that impressive lighting and choreography 💡🕺. I think people are just expecting too much from it, you know? It's a children's show at heart, not some Oscar-bait drama 🎬. Give it a chance, and I think you'll find it's actually pretty endearing 😊.

I'm totally mellowed out after watching The Storm Whale 🤗, but I gotta say, I was kinda expecting more oomph! I mean, it's a super sweet show and all, but for me, the vibes were pretty chill... like, too chill 😴. I love how they used puppetry and lighting design to create this immersive experience, tho! That whale puppet is on point 🐳! But yeah, if they'd just injected some more energy into the script, it would've been a real showstopper for me 🤩. Still, it's def a great reminder of the importance of friendship and connection - my kids loved it, and that's all that matters ❤️.

I feel like I've seen this movie vibe before 🤔 - you know, where they're trying to convey something important but can't quite shake off being too preachy? 😐 The Storm Whale has some lovely moments, don't get me wrong! But that earnestness just feels a bit too much at times. It's like they're hitting us over the head with the "friendship is key" lesson instead of letting it breathe naturally. 🙅‍♀️ Still, I love those puppetry skills - Keith Frederick's whale puppet is insane! 🐳🤩 The choreo and lighting are on point too... maybe if they'd found a better balance between tone, it would've been pure magic ✨

I think what I love most about The Storm Whale is how it showcases puppetry in a whole new level 🤩. That whale puppet by Keith Frederick is insane! It's like you're right there in front of you, feeling Noi's emotions. But yeah, the script could've used a bit more oomph to make it feel more energetic and fun for older kids and adults too. You know? I mean, I get that it's meant for young viewers, but some kids might find it a tad dull if they're not used to that kind of pace 😐. Still, the heart is in the right place, and I think kids will really love it ❤️.

I don't get why they went for such a mellow vibe in this show 🤔. I mean, it's a great story and all, but it feels like something is missing - you know, that extra oomph to make it really pop! I'm not saying the puppetry or choreography aren't top-notch, 'cause they totally are 💪🌟. But seriously, if they wanted to create a show for kids, wouldn't they want to give them a bit more excitement? The Singing Mermaid did it right, and this one just feels like a missed opportunity 🤦‍♀️. Still, I'm sure the little ones will love it 😊.

I was kinda expecting a show like The Singing Mermaid from them 🤔 but this one is more low-key I guess. I mean, I love the idea of a whale as the main character and all, but it feels like Noi's story gets a bit too sappy at times 💔 especially when he's talking to his mom's ghost in bed 😴 what if she was just, like, really busy or something? 🤷‍♀️ still, the puppetry is so cool! I wish they'd thrown more fun into it, though. The stage looks super pretty with all that lighting and choreography 🌐💃

aww, i think its so sweet how they used puppetry in this show 🐳❤️. the whale puppet is literally adorable! but yeah, i agree that the script could've been more playful 😊. kids love a good adventure, and this one feels a bit too mellow for my taste. still, i'm sure it'll tug at the heartstrings of all the little ones watching it 🌟. its like, they're trying to say something important about friendship and loneliness, but maybe could've done it in a way that's more exciting? 🤔

I feel like I just watched a heartwarming but kinda meh movie 🎥😐. The Storm Whale has some amazing elements, like that adorable whale puppet and the lighting design - it's like you're right there in the ocean 🌊! But sometimes I felt like the story was trying too hard to make a point, and it got a bit repetitive 🤯. I wish they'd added more excitement and energy to balance out the quieter moments 😔. Still, it's clear that the production team put a lot of love into making this show special ❤️. Maybe if they'd tweaked the script a bit, it would've really popped on stage! 💥

I don’t usually comment but I think they should add more variety in their storytelling 😊. The Storm Whale is such a beautiful story and with some tweaks it could've been even more magical 🧚‍♀️. The puppetry is stunning tho! Keith Frederick's whale puppet is like nothin' I’ve ever seen before 🐳. And the choreography is super impressive 💃. But yeah, for me, it feels a bit too mellow compared to other kids shows 🎶. They should maybe add some more excitement and adventure to balance out the heartfelt moments ❤️. Still, overall it's a lovely story that’ll surely touch the hearts of their young viewers 👫.
